ArtCraft is developing Rust applications modeled on Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, with Claude playing a substantial role in their development, according to The Register’s October 8, 2026 report. What is ArtCraft building?
ArtCraft is developing a family of Rust applications intended as alternatives to familiar creative and office software. The Register describes the projects as clean-room reimplementations and reports substantial use of Claude in development. ArtCraft’s GitHub profile identifies GridCraft as an open-source, Excel-style spreadsheet and DeckCraft as an open-source PowerPoint reimplementation; both were shown as updated on October 8, 2026.

The Register’s report centers on WordCraft, the Word-style application. The available reporting does not establish that all three projects are equally mature, or provide a systematic comparison with Microsoft Office.
Is WordCraft ready to replace Microsoft Word?
No. The Register described WordCraft as pre-alpha and advised against using it for production workloads. ArtCraft estimated that it had reached 62 percent of real feature parity, but that is a project estimate reported by The Register, not an independent measurement or a score from a side-by-side test.

The report said an alpha intended for everyday writing was described as close. That is not the same as a release ready for dependable work: the article supplies no production-readiness testing, independent performance results, or release date for a finished version.
Can WordCraft open DOCX files reliably?
That has not been established. At the time of The Register’s report, WordCraft had not begun testing DOCX compatibility against a collection of real-world files. The report also identifies charts, SmartArt and embedded OLE objects as features the project had dropped.

Consequently, the report cannot show how WordCraft handles a reader’s particular documents, especially files that rely on advanced layouts or embedded content. Anyone evaluating it for a workflow that depends on DOCX should test copies of representative files and check that formatting and objects survive opening and saving; the reported evidence does not provide a compatibility rate.
What did the hands-on look show?
The Register’s reporter said WordCraft worked pretty well in a first look on one Arm-based Surface. The interface resembles Word, but uses different buttons, icons and other imagery. This is one reported observation, not a broad test across devices, operating systems, document types or sustained workloads. It does not resolve the project’s stated maturity and compatibility limitations.

What are the licensing and spelling details?
According to The Register, ArtCraft says WordCraft is dual-licensed under MIT or Apache 2.0. The article also attributes to ArtCraft the statement: “The spelling dictionary and hyphenation come from Grady Ward’s public-domain Moby Hyphenator II word list,”. These details describe licensing and a spelling resource; they do not establish completeness, DOCX compatibility or readiness for professional use.
Does “clean-room reimplementation” settle the legal question?
No. The Register quotes Neil Brown of decoded.legal describing a possible argument: developers may contend that they independently implemented underlying functionality without access to the original program’s source code. Brown also cautions that the legal situation depends on jurisdiction and may be litigated; he said “the legal situation is always going to be interesting, and quite possibly litigated, when the party most likely to feel aggrieved has deep pockets and lots of lawyers, and probably quite a lot to lose.” This is legal commentary, not a ruling that the projects are lawful or unlawful.

The report says Microsoft acknowledged The Register’s inquiry but offered no further response; Adobe and The Document Foundation declined to comment.

What should readers watch for next?
The key questions are whether WordCraft progresses beyond pre-alpha, how it behaves with representative DOCX files, and whether it gains support for features such as charts and embedded objects. Platform coverage and performance across hardware also remain unestablished in the reported evidence. Until those points are demonstrated, the project’s stated parity estimate and one-device first look are not a substitute for testing against the needs of a real Office workflow.
