ARRI Film Lab is the better fit when you need a controllable film pipeline inside a supported OpenFX host, especially for adjustable grain, format-specific behavior, print and process color, halation, gate weave, and anamorphic treatment. It is not automatically the best choice for every project. The deciding factors are your host and version, color-management design, camera mix, required controls, playback and render performance, and license logistics.
Use the comparison below to identify whether Film Lab 1.5 belongs in your workflow, then test it against shortlisted alternatives on the same shots and delivery pipeline. No independent head-to-head benchmark establishes a universal winner.

The short answer: choose the pipeline, not the brand
Film emulation plugins can produce superficially similar results while behaving very differently in a real grade. A plugin that looks convincing in a still image may become difficult to manage when a project mixes cameras, uses ACES, requires editorial dailies, or must render across several workstations.

ARRI documents support for DaVinci Resolve, Baselight, Nuke, and other postproduction environments, with input and output options for LogC3/AWG3, LogC4/AWG4, and ACES 2.0 using ACEScc or ACEScct. It accepts RGB material from ARRI and third-party cameras after the footage is placed into a supported color pipeline; the camera logo or codec alone does not determine compatibility.

That makes Film Lab a strong candidate for a colorist who wants dedicated controls for grain, film format, halation, gate weave, print/process response, and anamorphic behavior. A different plugin may be a better fit if it supports your host more cleanly, offers controls your team actually uses, performs better on your hardware, or has licensing terms that match your production.
What ARRI Film Lab does
A workflow-specific OpenFX effect
Film Lab is not a camera transform, a replacement for color management, or a universal “make it cinematic” button. It is an effect that operates on RGB images inside a compatible grading or compositing application. You still need to decide where it sits in your node tree, what working space feeds it, and how the result is converted for monitoring and delivery.
ARRI’s Film Lab product page lists supported postproduction hosts and the documented color spaces. Before a show is committed, verify the exact host release, operating system, GPU requirements, and plug-in format with the current installation documentation. A host being OpenFX-compatible in general does not guarantee that every version, render mode, or operating system combination is supported.
Film profiles and color treatments
Film Lab includes 50D, 200T, and 500T grain profiles. Its color choices cover print-stock characteristics, reversal film, and bleach-bypass treatments. These names describe the plugin’s modeled behavior and control set; they are not proof that any setting is a frame-for-frame reconstruction of a particular laboratory process or that one stock is inherently more authentic than another.
ARRI Look Library integration
The included ARRI Look Library plugin provides 87 predefined looks, each available at three intensities. A look library can speed up exploration during dailies or a first-pass grade, but a preset is only a starting point. Exposure, white balance, skin tone, highlight roll-off, and the display transform still determine whether a look works on a specific shot.
What changed in Film Lab 1.5
ARRI announced Film Lab 1.5 on October 12, 2026. Existing license holders can upgrade to version 1.5 without an additional upgrade charge, according to ARRI’s announcement. The update expands both the format model and the range of several controls.

| Area | Film Lab 1.5 detail | Why it matters in a grade |
|---|---|---|
| Film formats | 8 mm, 16 mm, 35 mm, and 65 mm options | Lets the grain and format treatment follow a project’s intended capture or reference format instead of treating every look as 35 mm. |
| Grain Size | Adjustable from 0.75 to 1.5 | Provides a separate scale control when the stock profile is right but the apparent grain structure is not. |
| Rendition of Detail | Adjustable from 0.75 to 1.5 | Changes the balance between fine detail and the softened, photographed character associated with the emulation. |
| Anamorphic ratio | Selectable from 1.25x to 2.0x | Useful when the intended image character includes anamorphic grain or halation behavior. |
| Halation Spread | New control | Separates the width of the halation effect from its overall intensity. |
| Grain Intensity | Maximum extended to 2.0 | Allows stronger treatment than the earlier limit when a deliberately pronounced texture is required. |
| Halation Intensity | Maximum extended to 2.0 | Provides more headroom for stylized or period treatments, subject to careful monitoring of bright edges. |
| Existing controls | Negative Stocks, Print Processes, and Gate Weave remain | Preserves the core negative-to-print workflow and motion variation controls from earlier versions. |
| Processing speed | ARRI reports processing up to four times faster | This is a vendor-stated claim, not an independent benchmark. Actual gains depend on resolution, effects, host, hardware, and project settings. |
The ranges above are product controls, not recommended defaults. A high grain or halation value can obscure faces, exaggerate compression artifacts, or create unstable highlights. Judge the effect at the final delivery resolution and on a calibrated display whenever possible.
Color management and input compatibility
LogC and ACES options
Film Lab’s documented spaces include LogC3/AWG3, LogC4/AWG4, and ACES 2.0. In ACES 2.0 workflows, ARRI lists ACEScc and ACEScct input/output options. This matters because a plugin that expects scene-referred values can react very differently when fed display-referred RGB or an incorrectly transformed log signal.
Define the transform order before testing. For example, decide whether Film Lab receives a camera log signal, an ACES-managed image, or another scene-referred working space, and then keep that order identical for every candidate plugin. Do not compare one plugin before a display transform with another after a display transform and attribute the difference to the emulation model alone.
Mixed-camera projects
ARRI describes Film Lab as camera-agnostic for RGB material brought into its supported pipeline. In practical terms, that means the footage must first be normalized into a compatible color space; Film Lab does not remove the need for camera-specific IDTs, log-to-log transforms, exposure balancing, or white-balance correction.
For a mixed-camera show, create a repeatable normalization stage for each camera family, then feed the normalized images to Film Lab. Check neutral charts or gray cards, skin tones, saturated colors, and highlight transitions before judging grain or halation. When evaluating another plugin, read its input documentation rather than assuming that a camera-specific preset performs the same job as a color-managed transform.

How to compare Film Lab with other emulation plugins
Use the following dimensions instead of comparing screenshots from unrelated projects. The right result is the plugin that reaches the intended look with the fewest compromises in your actual pipeline.

Which workflow benefits most from Film Lab?
Choose Film Lab when format behavior is part of the creative brief
If the brief calls for a period-film texture, a specific perceived gauge, or an anamorphic character, Film Lab 1.5 gives the colorist direct controls for 8 mm, 16 mm, 35 mm, 65 mm, anamorphic ratios, grain size, detail rendition, and halation spread. That is more actionable than a single “film” slider when the look must be repeatable across scenes.
Choose it when ACES or LogC is already central to the facility
Teams already working in LogC3/AWG3, LogC4/AWG4, or ACES 2.0 can evaluate Film Lab within the color architecture they use for the rest of the show. This reduces the risk of building a one-off transform path solely for the film effect, although the exact node placement still needs to be tested.
Choose another plugin when host support or licensing is the constraint
A competing effect may be preferable if it supports a host or operating system that Film Lab does not, offers a render or floating-license model your facility requires, or gives faster playback on the hardware available. A smaller control set can also be an advantage when assistants need a simple, standardized preset workflow rather than a detailed negative-to-print model.

Using an ARRI camera is not, by itself, a reason to select Film Lab; using another camera is not, by itself, a reason to reject it. The relevant test is whether the RGB image is correctly normalized into a supported workflow and whether the resulting controls solve the project’s visual problems.
A practical comparison test
Run Film Lab and each serious alternative on identical material. The following procedure keeps the comparison useful without pretending that a short test proves a universal winner.
- Define the delivery target. Record the master color space, display transform, resolution, frame rate, and required deliverables. Include any editorial-daily or offline-render requirement.
- Select representative shots. Use at least one face in soft light, a high-contrast exterior, a practical-light interior, a shadow-heavy shot, a saturated-color scene, and footage from every camera family in the project.
- Normalize the inputs once. Apply the same camera transforms, exposure balancing, and white-balance corrections before inserting each plugin. Save the node or layer structure so every candidate receives equivalent input.
- Match a neutral starting point. Begin with moderate grain and halation, then adjust each plugin toward the same creative brief. Do not force identical parameter names or values; compare the result and the amount of work required.
- Inspect critical image areas. Check skin tones, fine hair, textured fabric, specular highlights, backlit edges, deep shadows, and flat areas such as skies. Look for color shifts, edge halos, crawling grain, and loss of detail.
- Test format and motion controls. For Film Lab, compare 8 mm, 16 mm, 35 mm, and 65 mm choices, anamorphic ratios, gate weave, Grain Size, Rendition of Detail, and Halation Spread. Confirm that the chosen behavior remains stable across cuts and motion.
- Measure playback and render time. Use the same resolution, bit depth, temporal effects, cache state, and hardware for every candidate. Record interactive playback, frame render, and full-sequence results; ARRI’s “up to four times faster” statement is not a substitute for this test.
- Validate color-managed output. Review the result through the actual monitoring transform and render a short section to the intended master format. A look that works in the grading viewer may change after a different output transform or compression stage.
- Document repeatability. Have a second operator reproduce the look from your notes or saved settings. If the result depends on undocumented tweaks, it may be expensive to maintain across a long show.
Licensing and production logistics
License terms can determine the practical winner even when two plugins produce acceptable images. ARRI describes individual Film Lab terms that can be weekly, monthly, annual, or permanent. The RE:Vision Effects ARRI Film Lab for Resolve page also lists a free trial, host and operating-system information, and floating and other licensing options.

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Performance: what the four-times claim does and does not tell you
ARRI says Film Lab 1.5 can process up to four times faster than the previous version. “Up to” indicates a best-case boundary, not a guaranteed speed increase for every shot. Resolution, source bit depth, scaling, temporal processing, host caching, GPU model, driver version, and other effects can all change the result.
For a meaningful measurement, clear caches, use identical source media, test both interactive playback and final rendering, and repeat the test at the resolution used for delivery. If a project depends on real-time review, measure the worst representative scene rather than an easy, low-noise shot. Keep the older plugin version available until the new build has passed the facility’s render and conform checks.
Common failure modes and fixes
The image looks too contrasty or the colors are wrong
First check whether the plugin is receiving the color space it expects. A log image sent through a display-referred path, or an ACES image transformed twice, can create exaggerated contrast and saturation that is mistaken for a creative look. Rebuild the test with a documented LogC or ACES path and compare before adding more controls.
Grain overwhelms faces or fine detail
Lower Grain Intensity, then evaluate Grain Size and Rendition of Detail separately. A smaller grain value is not always the solution if the detail rendition is also making edges appear harsh. Judge moving footage at delivery resolution, because grain that looks subtle on a 4K viewer may dominate an HD master.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHalation forms distracting colored rims
Reduce Halation Intensity and then narrow Halation Spread. Check bright windows, practical bulbs, and backlit hair at 100 percent and at normal viewing size. If the effect only works when pushed aggressively, the underlying exposure or color separation may need correction before the emulation is adjusted.
Best Value
Mixed-camera cuts do not match
Return to the normalization stage. Match exposure, white balance, and neutral references before matching film parameters. Applying different creative settings to compensate for an uncorrected camera transform makes continuity harder to maintain.
Playback is slow after the update
Confirm that the host is loading the intended 1.5 build, then test caching and render settings. Compare a clean Film Lab node with the full grade to isolate whether another effect or a scaling operation is responsible. The vendor’s speed claim cannot predict performance on your specific workstation.
How to make a final decision
Film Lab is the logical choice when most of the following statements are true:
- Your facility uses a supported OpenFX host and can verify the exact version and operating system.
- The project already uses LogC3/AWG3, LogC4/AWG4, or ACES 2.0 with a controlled transform strategy.
- You need separate control over film format, grain scale, detail rendition, halation spread, anamorphic ratio, print/process response, or gate weave.
- You want the ARRI Look Library’s 87 looks and three intensity levels as starting points for look development or dailies.
- Your tests show acceptable playback and render times on the actual project hardware.
- The available weekly, monthly, annual, permanent, floating, and other license options fit the number of artists and render systems involved.
Choose a different emulation plugin when a candidate has materially better support for your host, color pipeline, render infrastructure, or license model, or when its simpler controls produce the required look with less operator training. The decision should come from the side-by-side test, not from a preset screenshot or a camera badge.
What the available evidence supports
ARRI’s product information establishes Film Lab’s documented hosts, color-space options, controls, bundled looks, and license categories. Its October 12, 2026 announcement establishes the 1.5 feature expansion, the free upgrade statement for existing license holders, and the vendor-reported processing improvement. ARRI also quotes cinematographer Stijn van der Veken ASC, SBC, calling it “the first time I’ve seen a film look plugin that really helps create a vintage look on a period drama.” That is an attributed creative testimonial, not comparative test evidence.
ARRI identifies digital imaging technician and colorist Maurice Morales as describing Film Lab’s role in carrying cinematographers’ creative intent into editorial dailies. Such comments explain intended use, but they do not replace controlled testing on your footage. No independent market statistic or named head-to-head plugin study establishes that Film Lab is more accurate, faster, or better-looking than every alternative.
Bottom line
ARRI Film Lab 1.5 fits a workflow that values explicit film-format behavior, adjustable grain and detail, print/process color, halation, gate weave, anamorphic treatment, and a documented LogC or ACES path inside a supported host. Its 1.5 update broadens those controls and is reported by ARRI to process up to four times faster, but the speed result must be verified on your own system.
For any other project, treat Film Lab as one candidate in a controlled comparison. Normalize the same mixed-camera footage, use the same delivery transform, test motion and skin tones, measure playback and rendering, and confirm seats and render rights. The plugin that fits your workflow is the one that remains predictable from camera ingest through final delivery.
