The fastest fix is to put your game on the branch the server expects, install the latest game update, let every required mod finish downloading, and then verify or refresh damaged files. If only one server rejects you while others work, the remote server or one of its mods is probably outdated; reinstalling your own game cannot repair it.

Use the steps below in order. They separate player-side problems from server-owner problems, because the remedy is different for a stale local cache, a full Xbox mod allocation, an experimental-branch mismatch, and an unupdated dedicated server.

Arma Reforger multiplayer requires several pieces to line up:
- The base game build installed on your device.
- The branch you are running, such as the normal release branch or an experimental development branch.
- Every required Workshop mod, including the version currently configured by the server.
- On consoles, enough reserved mod storage to download and update that content.
Bohemia Interactive support lists a different game version, including a server on the experimental branch, as a reason a player cannot connect. The same guidance identifies required user-created add-ons and mods as another cause. A server can therefore reject you even when your base game appears current if one required mod is missing, stuck, corrupted, or built for an older release.

There is no published official percentage for how often this error occurs or how often a particular repair succeeds. Treat the warning as a compatibility diagnosis rather than proof that your installation alone is at fault.
First determine which side is wrong

This split prevents a common mistake: repeatedly reinstalling a client when the remote dedicated server is still running an old build.
Does the red version-mismatch text show my version or the server version?
The red warning is an indication that the two sides are incompatible; it should not be read as a guaranteed label for either your local version or the server’s version. Unless the message explicitly names a build or branch, use it as a prompt to compare both sides rather than assuming the displayed value belongs to you.
You can identify the failing side by testing a second server that uses the same branch and a similar mod set. If that server accepts you, your base installation is probably usable and the first server needs an owner-side check. If every server fails, continue with the player procedure below.
Player-side repair on PC
1. Match the server’s branch
Check that Arma Reforger is running the normal release branch expected by the server. Do not attempt to join an experimental-development server with a stable client, or a stable server with an experimental client. If you deliberately opted into an experimental branch, return to the branch used by the server before changing files or mods.

2. Install the complete game update
Close the game and allow Steam to finish any pending Arma Reforger update. A partially applied update can leave the executable and data files on different revisions. Start the game only after the download and installation indicators have completed.

3. Verify the installation through Steam
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Arma Reforger and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Launch the game again and retry a server after any repaired files have been reacquired.
Verification addresses damaged or incomplete base-game files. It does not make an outdated remote server compatible and does not guarantee that a third-party mod has been republished for a new game release.
4. Start clean and let required mods finish
Restart Arma Reforger after updating or verifying it. When joining a modded server, remain in the download process until every required Workshop item is complete. Interrupting the download, closing the game during installation, or joining before the final mod is ready can leave the client with an unusable version.
To isolate a conflict, disable recently added or optional mods and try the server again. Keep the server’s required items enabled; the goal is to remove extras that might interfere while preserving the content the server actually needs.
5. Manually update a stuck Workshop mod
Bohemia Interactive’s known-issues guidance specifically recommends manually updating the mod or mods in the Workshop menu when an update does not complete. Open Workshop, locate the affected item, and start its update rather than relying only on the automatic prompt.

If the manual update does not change the status, restart the game and check Workshop again. A restart can release a locked download or complete a pending update.
6. Delete and redownload an old mod copy
When a mod remains stuck after a restart, remove the older local copy from your Workshop content and download the current version again. Use the in-game Workshop controls so the game obtains the item associated with the server’s current configuration. Do this only for the affected mod or mods; deleting all content creates a much longer download without proving that the whole installation was bad.
7. Clear stale mod data when files appear damaged
On PC, clear the Arma Reforger mod cache using the game’s available cache-management control, then relaunch and allow required items to download again. Cache clearing is appropriate when a mod repeatedly reports an old version, fails validation, or loops between downloading and updating. It will not solve a server that has not been updated.
Player-side repair on Xbox
Check the fixed mod allocation
Xbox provides a fixed amount of storage for Arma Reforger mods. If that allocation is full, a required mod may fail to download or update even though the console has free space elsewhere. Remove unnecessary Workshop content from the game’s mod storage, restart Arma Reforger, and retry the download.

Review visibility settings before troubleshooting versions
Crossplay settings, server filters, ping limits, and region choices affect which servers appear in the browser. A server that is hidden by a filter is not necessarily running an incompatible version. Reset restrictive filters, confirm the intended crossplay setting, and broaden the region or ping range temporarily when diagnosing a missing server.
What changes after a major Arma Reforger release
Major releases can invalidate mods even when the server owner has updated the base game. In Bohemia Interactive’s 1.0 modding announcement, mods that had not been published with the latest Arma Reforger Tools version were to be hidden and marked incompatible with 1.0. The announcement also explained that outdated mods could not be used to host servers after the transition.

- The client and server may both show the new base-game build.
- A required mod may still be compiled or packaged for the previous toolchain.
- The old mod can be hidden, marked incompatible, or unavailable for hosting.
- Players may connect to some servers but fail on servers that still reference the old item.
If the mismatch began immediately after a patch, test a server whose owner has confirmed an updated mod set. Otherwise, wait for the server or mod maintainer to publish compatible files. A local reinstall cannot convert an old mod into a release built with the current tools.

1. Update the dedicated server build and branch
Bring the dedicated server to the same game build and branch expected by clients. If the hosting control panel offers automatic updates, keep that option enabled so the server does not remain on an older revision after a public release. A server can be reachable and listed while still rejecting every client that has already updated.
2. Validate files when corruption is suspected
Run the host’s file-validation process for one startup when server files appear damaged or incomplete. A third-party hosting guide recommends validating once, then clearing the validation flag so the server does not repeat the operation on every launch. Validation repairs local server data; it does not update a mod that has been removed or republished under a new version.
3. Audit every configured Workshop mod
Review the complete mod list, not only the item named in a player’s error. For each entry, compare the configured mod ID and version with the current Workshop entry. A failed download, stale version pin, or typo can make clients disconnect even when the base-game build matches.
After changing a mod, restart the dedicated server and test with a clean client. Keep a record of the exact IDs and versions so a future update does not silently restore an obsolete configuration.
4. Recheck mods after major releases
Following a major release, confirm that every required mod was republished with the current Arma Reforger Tools. The 1.0 transition’s incompatible-mod handling means that an item that worked before the release may no longer be valid for hosting. Remove obsolete entries or replace them with the maintainer’s compatible publication before asking players to reinstall anything.
5. Tell players what changed
Publish the server’s current build, branch, and required mod versions in its description or community channel. If only your server is failing while others work, tell players that the repair is server-side and provide an expected update window rather than directing everyone to reinstall the game.

Preventing the mismatch from returning
- Keep the client on the branch your regular servers use; change branches only when you intend to test a matching server.
- Leave enough Xbox mod allocation for large Workshop updates instead of using every available slot.
- After a game patch, wait for essential mods to be republished before scheduling a server event.
- Server owners should enable automatic dedicated-server updates where available and monitor the configured mod IDs and versions.
- Use one-time file validation after an abnormal shutdown or damaged-file report, then disable the recurring validation flag.
- When reporting a failure, include whether other servers work, your branch, the server name, and the required mod that failed. That information distinguishes a local cache problem from a remote configuration problem.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Stop reinstalling or deleting files when a second, fully updated server accepts you but one particular server does not. At that point, the evidence points to the failing server’s build, branch, or mod configuration. Send the owner the server’s displayed error and the name and version of the required mod; only the owner can update a remote dedicated server.
Conversely, if no server accepts you and Workshop items repeatedly fail after you have matched the branch, completed updates, verified PC files or freed Xbox mod storage, and redownloaded the affected mods, the remaining issue is local or account-specific. Preserve the exact error text and the point at which the download fails when seeking official support.
