If Arma Reforger will not start, crashes before the menu, hangs while loading an addon, or fails only when you join a server, troubleshoot in this order: update the game, verify the PC installation when applicable, clear the mod cache, then launch without recently added or suspect mods. If the failure occurs only on a modded server, check addon downloads and storage before reinstalling. If it occurs only in multiplayer, test an official or unmodded server and then check version branch, filters, cross-play and firewall settings.

Bohemia Interactive’s startup-crash guidance specifically puts a fully updated game, Steam file verification on PC, mod-cache clearing and a clean launch at the front of the process. The correct fix depends on the failure stage, platform, mod state and whether the problem began after an update.

First, identify exactly where loading fails
“Arma Reforger does not work” can describe several different faults. Write down the last screen or action that succeeds; that observation determines which checks are useful and prevents you from deleting or reinstalling things unnecessarily.

Also note whether the problem affects every server or only one, whether it began after a game update, and whether the same account can start a clean session. Those five details—stage, platform, mod state, timing and scope—are more diagnostic than repeatedly pressing Join.

Apply the official startup sequence
Do these checks in order. After each one, try a clean launch so you know which change mattered.
- Fully update Arma Reforger. Install any pending game update before troubleshooting files or addons. A client and server on different branches can also fail to connect even when the game appears current, so record the branch shown by the game or server browser.
- Verify the installation on PC. In Steam, open Library, right-click Arma Reforger, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Let Steam finish and apply any replacement files before starting the game. This check is for the base installation; it does not repair every damaged Workshop download.
- Clear the mod cache. Use Arma Reforger’s current mod manager/cache-clearing control, then allow the manager to rebuild its local addon data. Cache labels can change between builds, so use the control exposed by the installed version rather than deleting unrelated game files manually.
- Launch in a clean state. Disable recently added, recently updated or otherwise suspect mods and start the base game. Do not immediately reconnect to the large modded server that exposed the problem; first confirm that the menus and an unmodded session load.
- Reintroduce content gradually. If the clean launch works, enable or download one addon at a time and restart only when necessary. The first addon that brings the crash or endless loading back is the practical conflict suspect. Keep it disabled until its author or a game update resolves the incompatibility.
A clean launch is an isolation test, not a permanent instruction to play without mods. If the base game also fails after these steps, the cause is more likely the installation, platform state, update regression, hardware or network environment than a single Workshop item.

Official missing-content guidance identifies four recurring causes: a version mismatch, an incomplete download, limited storage and a recent game update. A server can therefore be healthy while your local addon set is not.
Retry an interrupted download correctly
- Exit the current server or loading screen and restart the game.
- Open the mod manager and let pending downloads retry without starting another server connection.
- Wait for every required addon to report completion. A partially downloaded item can leave the server join process waiting indefinitely.
- If one item repeatedly fails, cancel or remove that item, restart the manager and download it again.
- Disable recently added addons and test the server with only its established requirements. Add the disabled items back one by one after a successful load.
Repeatedly retrying the same large addon while storage is full will not create space. Check available mod storage first, particularly on Xbox, where the console applies a fixed allocation specifically for mods. Remove unused or incomplete downloads, then retry the update.
Recognize a version or compatibility mismatch
After a game patch, an addon built for an older version may download successfully yet fail validation or hang during preparation. Compare the game branch and version with the server’s requirements, and watch for an addon that was published or updated before the patch. If the server requires user-generated content, every required item must be present and compatible; having most of the collection is not enough.

Do not confuse a server problem with a local addon problem
Join an official or unmodded server. If it loads while a single community server does not, your base installation is probably usable and the investigation should focus on that server’s required addons, branch, platform compatibility or configuration. If every server that needs addons fails but vanilla servers work, keep the mod isolation focus. If vanilla servers fail too, return to platform, file and network checks.
Infinite loading after a game update
A patch can change the meaning of a symptom. Bohemia Interactive’s June 5, 2025 version 1.4.0.31 notes document fixes for the start of an addon download becoming stuck on an infinite loading screen, downloads that could not resume after a restart, and resumed downloads that failed without displaying an error. Players who began seeing the problem immediately after an update should therefore update to the newest available build before treating the behavior as a permanent local fault.
The May 29, 2025 version 1.4.0.29 notes also record fixes for a false PlayStation 5 “Not enough storage space” message, PlayStation 5 Workshop crashes, console pause/resume corruption and addon platform-compatibility validation. Those notes explain why a storage warning or Workshop crash can be update-related even when the console has free system space.
For an update-related loading loop, restart the game, retry the addon download, remove the failed or incomplete item, and test a clean session. Do not assume that a download which survived a pause or restart is valid; the documented failures included both non-resumable and silently failed resumed downloads.
Platform-specific fixes
PC through Steam
Use the update, file-verification, cache-clear and clean-launch sequence before changing graphics settings. If the game reaches the menu but runs poorly or crashes under load, close browsers, launchers, overlays and other background applications, then confirm that the computer meets the game’s minimum requirements. Lower view distance and shadows first; those settings can reduce rendering and streaming pressure without changing the mod installation.

If Steam reports that files were repaired but the same crash returns, repeat the clean launch with every nonessential mod disabled. A verified base installation does not prove that a Workshop item is complete or compatible. Conversely, if the game fails before any mod can load, capture the exact crash stage and continue to the escalation steps rather than repeatedly subscribing and unsubscribing to addons.
Xbox Series X|S
Restart the console when you see memory, performance or loading symptoms. Then inspect Arma Reforger’s mod storage in the game’s mod manager. Xbox provides a fixed allocation for mods; reaching that limit can prevent new addons from downloading or updating even when the console’s general drive has space. Remove unused, obsolete or incomplete addons and retry the download from a fresh game session.
For a modded server, confirm that all required content finishes downloading before joining again. If an official or unmodded server loads but the target server does not, focus on the target server’s addon set and compatibility. If no server loads after a restart and clean test, record whether the issue is a crash, an endless spinner or a connection failure; those symptoms lead to different next checks.
PlayStation 5
Install the latest game update, restart the console and retry the download or server join. Treat a sudden storage warning or Workshop crash as potentially update-related: version 1.4.0.29 specifically lists fixes for a false “Not enough storage space” error and Workshop crashes on PS5, as well as console pause/resume corruption. Remove an obviously incomplete addon and test a clean or official session before deleting the entire game.
If the same failure affects only one modded server, verify its required addons and platform compatibility. If it affects every session, preserve the error wording and timing for a support report, especially when the behavior began directly after a patch.

When the problem is really multiplayer connectivity
A server that is invisible or refuses a join is not necessarily a launch failure. Multiplayer visibility and connection can differ because of browser filters, platform restrictions, ping limits, region, cross-play settings, game branches, required user-generated addons, firewalls or other network obstacles.
Reset the server-browser conditions
- Clear search text and restrictive filters, including region, ping, password and platform-related filters.
- Check the server’s branch and version against the client. A mismatched branch can prevent joining even when both installations are otherwise intact.
- Try an official or unmodded server. This separates browser and network problems from addon preparation.
- If the official server works, return to the original server and inspect its required content, region, ping and platform rules.
- Check cross-play settings. Bohemia Interactive confirms cross-play among PC, Xbox and PlayStation 5 when the server enables it; a server that does not enable cross-play will not behave like a universal server.
- Review firewall and network-security software rules for the game. A firewall can allow the launcher while blocking the actual multiplayer connection.
Do not reinstall solely because one community server is missing. A server may be filtered out, outside its ping limit, on another branch, restricted to a platform, or waiting for an addon you have not installed.
Separate server-side and client-side evidence
If friends on the same platform can join the server while your clean client cannot, continue with local files, cache and addon checks. If players across platforms cannot see or join it, the server’s branch, cross-play setting, required content or availability is more plausible. This is not proof of a server defect, but it tells you which administrator or support channel needs the reproduction details.
Performance symptoms that look like loading failures
A very long first load, frozen-looking frame rate or a return to the dashboard can be mistaken for an infinite loading bug. On PC, close background applications and confirm minimum requirements before changing addons. Lower view distance and shadows, then retest the same location or server. Keep the mod set unchanged during that comparison so a graphics improvement is not confused with a content fix.
On Xbox Series X|S, restart the console when memory or performance symptoms appear and retest before repeatedly joining a heavily modded server. A fixed mod-storage limit and a performance problem can coexist; freeing addon space addresses downloads, while a restart addresses the temporary console state.

A practical decision path
- Fails before the menu on every attempt: update, verify Steam files if on PC, clear the mod cache and launch with no mods.
- Menu works, vanilla works, modded content fails: retry downloads, check required versions, free platform-specific mod storage and isolate the newest addon.
- Only one server fails: reset filters, confirm branch, cross-play, ping and region, then inspect that server’s required addons.
- Everything began after a patch: install the newest build, review the relevant update behavior and retry downloads after a restart.
- Loading succeeds but performance collapses: close background applications, check requirements and reduce view distance and shadows on PC; restart Xbox when memory symptoms appear.
Keep a short record while testing: platform, game version or branch, server name, vanilla/modded state, the last completed screen, exact error text and whether a restart changed the result. That record prevents circular troubleshooting and gives support a reproducible case.

Attach logs when the platform makes them available, plus screenshots or video showing the error or loading loop. Include the date the behavior began and whether it followed an update. Avoid claiming that a mod or server is broken when the evidence only shows that your client could not complete the join.
This escalation package is more useful than a generic “it will not launch” report because it lets support distinguish a base-game startup crash, an addon download failure, a platform storage allocation issue, an update regression and a multiplayer configuration problem.
