The fix is to align the game branch and build first, then repair base-game files, match every required Workshop mod and revision, and finally check whether the server is loading the correct installation or whether a firewall is blocking the connection.

What an Arma 3 server version mismatch actually means
Arma 3 can reject a connection when the data loaded by your PC is different from the data loaded by the server. “Version” therefore does not refer only to the number shown for the base game. It can include the Steam branch, the installed build, damaged or incomplete files, Workshop add-ons, the exact revision of a mod, and the files selected by a dedicated-server installation.

In practice, five separate checks are useful:
| Compatibility layer | What must match | Who normally controls it |
|---|---|---|
| Game branch and build | Both sides must use a compatible stable or experimental-development build. | Player and server administrator |
| Base-game files | Your Arma 3 installation must be complete and unaltered where the server expects stock data. | Player, Steam and server administrator |
| Workshop content | Every required mod must be enabled, downloaded and at the revision the server is running. | Player, mod maintainer and server administrator |
| Server installation and mod path | The dedicated server must load the intended Arma 3 data rather than files from another installation. | Server administrator |
| Network reachability | Firewall and other network rules must allow the client to reach the server. | Player or network administrator |
These layers have different remedies. Reinstalling a mod will not correct a server running the experimental-development branch, and changing a firewall rule will not repair a mismatched PBO. Identify the layer named by the error before changing settings.

Fastest fix for a player
Perform the following sequence in order. It starts with the least disruptive checks and only moves to targeted file removal when the error identifies a specific file.
- Close Arma 3 and restart Steam. Exit the game, quit Steam completely, start Steam again, and then open the Arma 3 Launcher. A pending game patch or Workshop download can leave the launcher and the server browser working with different data until both have restarted.
- Check the branch. Confirm that your installation uses the same branch as the server. A server on the experimental-development branch can differ from the normal stable build. If the server administrator has not told you to use an experimental branch, use the normal branch; if the server is explicitly experimental, select that branch instead and allow Steam to finish updating before trying again.
- Verify the game files in Steam. In Steam, open the Arma 3 entry, open its Properties, find the installed-files or local-files section, and choose Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish, then restart the launcher. This replaces damaged or inconsistent stock files; it does not decide which optional Workshop mods the server requires.
- Enable and download the server’s required Workshop mods. Use the launcher or server browser to see the server’s required add-ons. Enable every required item, subscribe when prompted, and wait for Steam Workshop downloads and updates to complete. The official Workshop workflow can pair a server’s mod identifiers with Workshop items and subscribe to missing items when the server is configured with those identifiers.
- Handle a named PBO or BISIGN error. If the message names a PBO, close Arma 3 and remove the named local PBO together with its accompanying BISIGN file. Then verify the game files again. If the named file belongs to a Workshop mod, re-download that Workshop item instead. If the same error returns, the server copy may be outdated or inconsistent and the administrator must correct it.
- Check the firewall and network only after data matches. If the branch, files and mods match but the join still fails, inspect firewall permissions and other network rules. A blocked connection can look like a game problem even when both installations are identical.
Restart Steam and the launcher completely
Do not merely close the game window. Steam can continue downloading a game patch or a Workshop revision after Arma 3 has closed. Quit Steam from its menu, start it again, and look for active downloads before launching Arma 3. Then restart the Arma 3 Launcher as well. This gives Steam an opportunity to finish a queued update and lets the launcher rebuild its view of enabled content.
If the server administrator says a patch was released moments ago, wait for the download to complete on both sides. Attempting to join while one side is still updating can produce a mismatch that disappears after the restart and update finish.
Match stable and experimental-development branches
The stable and experimental-development branches are not interchangeable. A server that stays on experimental development can expose data or version information that a normal stable client does not have. Conversely, a stable server will not become compatible merely because an experimental client is newer.
Ask the administrator which branch the server uses, then select that branch in the Arma 3 Steam properties. After changing the branch, allow Steam to download or roll back all required files. Do not launch from an old desktop shortcut while Steam is still applying the change; open the launcher after the update reports completion.

Verify stock files before deleting anything manually
Verify integrity of game files is the safest first repair for a damaged base installation. It is appropriate when the error does not identify a mod, when a patch was interrupted, or when several unrelated files appear inconsistent. Verification can restore stock data that no longer matches the installed build.
Verification is not a substitute for matching Workshop revisions. A successful verification result does not mean that every server mod is enabled, current or loaded from the same location as the server’s copy. Treat the Steam check as the base-game step, then inspect the launcher’s mod list separately.
Synchronize required Workshop mods
Servers can require user-generated add-ons. The launcher may show the required items and offer to subscribe or download them, but the download must finish before the files are usable. Enable all required mods for that server and avoid launching with a partially updated collection.
A mod’s name is not enough to prove compatibility. The server may be running a different revision of the same Workshop item, or it may require a particular collection of add-ons. If the administrator publishes a mod list, compare the identifiers and revisions rather than relying on similarly named local folders.
When a Workshop item has just been updated, Steam can temporarily leave an older local copy while the new data is downloading. Wait for the Workshop queue to finish, restart the launcher, and recheck the server’s required-mod display. If the server still reports a mismatch after your copy updates, provide the administrator with the exact mod and error text so the server’s copy can be checked.

Repair a PBO or BISIGN mismatch
A PBO error is unusually useful because it names the data that differs. Bohemia Interactive describes this condition as the server using different data from the client. The accompanying BISIGN file is part of the same signed add-on data and should be removed with the named PBO when the official guidance calls for it.
- Write down the complete PBO path or filename shown by the error.
- Exit Arma 3 and the launcher so the file is not in use.
- Delete the named PBO and its accompanying BISIGN file from the local installation.
- If the path belongs to a Workshop mod, trigger a fresh download of that Workshop item. If it is stock game data, run Steam’s file-integrity check.
- Start the launcher, enable the required content, and try the server again.
Do not delete unrelated files simply because their names look similar. If the same PBO error appears after a clean re-download and verification, the remaining discrepancy may be on the server. The administrator may need to update, replace or clean the server-side copy.
How to read common mismatch symptoms
The server appears, but joining reports a different version
This usually points to a branch or build difference, an update that has not completed, or a dedicated server that was not updated after a game patch. Confirm the branch on both sides, restart Steam, and complete all downloads before doing deeper mod troubleshooting.
The message names a missing add-on or mod
Enable the named Workshop item and every other required item shown by the server. Let Steam subscribe and download missing content, then restart the launcher. If the item is already enabled, compare its revision with the server’s list; an enabled but older copy is still incompatible.

Follow the targeted deletion and re-download procedure above. A PBO error means the server and client are using different data, not automatically that your entire installation is broken. If local repair does not change the result, report the exact filename to the administrator.

The server disappears or times out after files match
Move to the network layer only after the branch, base files and mods have been aligned. Bohemia identifies firewalls and other obstacles between the player and server as a separate cause of connection failure. Check that Arma 3 and Steam are allowed by the local firewall and that any managed network permits the server connection. If you are on a restricted network, the network administrator may need to allow the traffic; changing game files will not solve a blocked route.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Dedicated-server administrator checks
Administrators have additional failure modes because the server can keep running from an installation that players never see. Perform these checks after every game patch and whenever several players report the same mismatch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUpdate the dedicated-server installation after patches
A dedicated server that was not updated can report a false version mismatch even when a player’s client is current. Apply the game update to the dedicated-server installation, restart the service, and confirm that it is running the intended build before asking players to change their branches or delete files.
When only one player fails to join, compare that player’s branch and mod set first. When many players fail immediately after a patch, prioritize the server update and startup configuration instead of directing every player to reinstall.
Prevent the server from loading another Arma installation
A machine can contain more than one Arma installation, and a dedicated server may accidentally load full client data from the wrong location. The dedicated-server documentation recommends an explicit empty -mod= workaround for this situation. The official known-issues guidance likewise recommends an explicit -mod= list when add-ons are being loaded from the wrong installation.

Review the service, batch file or launch configuration and identify the executable and data directories it actually uses. Remove accidental references to another client installation, then use the intended explicit mod configuration. Restart the server after changing the command line and test with a client whose branch and Workshop set are known to match.
Keep the server’s required mod list authoritative
Players can only synchronize reliably when the server advertises the correct Workshop identifiers and required add-ons. Check that every required item is present on the server, that the configured identifier points to the intended Workshop content, and that obsolete or duplicate files are not being loaded. If a mod was updated, restart the server with the new files rather than leaving an old process running.
When a player reports a PBO mismatch, compare the server-side PBO and BISIGN with a freshly downloaded copy. A server-side stale file can continue rejecting every correctly updated client until the administrator replaces or removes it.
Separate data errors from firewall errors
A successful server listing does not prove that the join path is fully permitted, and a failed join does not prove that the files are wrong. Once the server branch, installation and mods are confirmed, inspect host firewall rules, upstream filtering and other network obstacles. Document whether the failure is an immediate version or PBO message versus a timeout or inability to reach the service; those symptoms point to different owners.
Who should take the next action?
| Observed result | Next owner | Most useful action |
|---|---|---|
| Client is on a different branch | Player | Select the server’s stable or experimental-development branch and finish the Steam update. |
| Steam reports damaged or inconsistent stock files | Player and Steam | Run Verify integrity of game files, then restart the launcher. |
| Required Workshop item is absent or still downloading | Player and Workshop | Subscribe, download, enable the item and wait for completion. |
| A named PBO/BISIGN remains wrong after local repair | Server administrator | Compare, update or clean the server-side copy. |
| Several players fail after a game patch | Server administrator | Update and restart the dedicated server. |
| Server loads files from another installation | Server administrator | Correct the executable/data paths and use an explicit -mod= configuration. |
| Build and mods match but connection times out | Player or network administrator | Check firewall and other network rules. |
A clean troubleshooting decision tree
- Does the error explicitly mention a branch or version? Align stable versus experimental-development branches, restart Steam, and complete the update.
- Does it identify a missing add-on? Subscribe to and enable every required Workshop item, then wait for downloads.
- Does it name a PBO or BISIGN? Delete that PBO and its accompanying BISIGN, verify stock files or re-download the mod, and retest.
- Did verification report a problem without naming a mod? Finish Steam’s integrity repair and restart the launcher.
- Do multiple players fail after a patch? Ask the administrator to update the dedicated server and check its startup paths.
- Do files and mods match but the connection still cannot be made? Investigate firewalls and other network obstacles.
Stop at the first step that resolves the problem. Changing several variables at once makes it harder to tell whether a branch change, file repair, mod update or network rule fixed the connection.

Preventing the mismatch from returning
- Let Steam finish game and Workshop downloads before launching Arma 3.
- Record whether the server uses the stable or experimental-development branch and tell regular players when that choice changes.
- Keep a single authoritative list of required Workshop identifiers and remove obsolete entries.
- After every game patch, update and restart the dedicated server before reopening it to players.
- Review the server launch configuration for accidental references to another Arma installation.
- When reporting a failure, include the exact branch, the complete PBO or BISIGN filename if shown, and whether the failure is an immediate data error or a network timeout.
The practical rule is simple: match the branch, repair the base files, synchronize the exact Workshop data, verify the server’s installation paths, and only then troubleshoot the network. Each step addresses a different compatibility layer, so following that order avoids unnecessary reinstalls and gives the server administrator actionable information when the fault is not on the player’s PC.
