Choose the Arlo Pro 6 if you need a wider view, HDR for scenes with bright and shadowed areas, or a removable battery that makes charging easier. Both are 2K-class outdoor cameras with a spotlight, siren, two-way audio, color night vision, and direct Wi-Fi connectivity; the deciding factors are coverage, upkeep, and the cost of the features you want after any trial.

Which camera should you buy?
Choose Essential 3 for a smaller area and a lower upfront price
Essential 3 is a sensible fit for an entryway, compact yard, or secondary camera where its 130° diagonal view covers the important area. Its battery cannot be removed, so charging requires connecting the supplied cable while the camera remains mounted. That is manageable if the camera is reachable and the charging interruption is acceptable.
Choose Pro 6 for broader coverage or easier battery swaps
Pro 6’s stated 160° diagonal view may suit a wider porch, driveway, or yard. Its HDR is intended for scenes with brighter and darker areas, and its removable battery lets you replace a depleted one with a charged battery rather than taking the camera down to charge it. Check the exact compatible spare-battery model before purchasing one.
#1 Best Overall
Compare the ongoing cost, not just the camera
Arlo says Pro 6 continues to provide live video and motion notifications after its trial without a subscription, but cloud video storage, interactive notifications, video object detection, and other premium features require a paid Secure plan. Check current terms for your region and for Essential 3 rather than assuming the cameras have identical post-trial entitlements. A compatible hub may offer a local-storage route, but confirm that its recording behavior meets your needs.
How much difference does the wider view make?
The 30-degree difference in stated diagonal field of view gives Pro 6 a broader view on paper. This can help when one camera needs to cover more of a frontage or driveway, but a wider specification does not guarantee useful coverage of every spot: placement, distance, and obstructions still matter. If the camera will watch a small entry or a clearly bounded area, Essential 3’s 130° view may be enough.
Rank #2
Both are 2K-class cameras, not a 2K-versus-4K choice. Arlo lists Essential 3’s maximum resolution as 2560 × 1440. For Pro 6, Arlo calls the camera 2K and also uses “2K+” in some materials; do not interpret that branding as 4K. Pro 6 adds HDR, which can help manage a scene containing both brighter and darker areas, but it does not change the stated resolution class.
What changes in battery upkeep?
The practical distinction is removability. Essential 3’s battery is fully integrated and cannot be removed, according to Arlo’s product page. Recharging therefore means bringing power to the mounted camera. Pro 6 has a rechargeable removable battery, so a charged spare can reduce downtime if you have a compatible one.

Arlo’s battery-life figures are estimates, not independent head-to-head test results. Its current Essential 3 product page says up to four months, while its sales sheet lists four to six months; the Pro 6 product page and sales sheet list eight months. Actual runtime depends on activity, settings, signal conditions, temperature, and environment. Arlo also says Pro 6’s battery lasts 15% longer than the older Pro 5S 2K; that is not a direct comparison with Essential 3.
Do either camera need a hub or subscription?
Hub: optional for Wi-Fi connection
Both cameras can connect directly to home Wi-Fi, so a hub is not required simply to get them online. Arlo lists VMB4540 and VMB5000 as compatible hub models for both. Arlo describes USB storage through a compatible hub or base station; verify the specific hub and recording functions you need before relying on a local-storage setup.
Rank #4
Subscription: depends on the features you want
For Pro 6, Arlo’s FAQ says live video and motion notifications remain available after the trial without a subscription. Cloud video storage and several advanced notification or detection features are paid features, and availability can vary by region. Review Arlo’s current regional plan terms if you need saved cloud clips or those advanced features; do not treat the trial as permanent inclusion.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you verify before checkout?
- Confirm that the exact model is the 2K Essential Outdoor Camera (3rd Gen) or Pro 6, not an older Essential generation, an XL edition, or a different resolution variant.
- Check current local camera pricing, availability, and Secure plan terms; the cited price references are US figures published in April 2026.
- If local recording matters, confirm that your chosen VMB4540 or VMB5000 hub and USB storage arrangement support the specific recording behavior you expect.
- If buying Pro 6 accessories, verify compatibility for the exact battery or solar panel. Arlo’s product page specifies USB-C for its XL battery/housing and limits supported solar panels to Arlo-certified USB-C and universal panels.
