Different 2× and 4× note effects can combine into an 8× experience effect, and a Broth of Enlightenment can be added when you have one. On a typical Island route, the official community documentation says a new character can reach approximately level 70 in under 15 minutes, although the result depends on the route and server settings.

After that opening burst, use the safest high-value crafting available, then move to hunting as your equipment and tames make combat more efficient. The current reported player cap is level 245, so reaching the first 70 levels is only the beginning of the full progression path.

The fastest leveling route, in order
- Collect Explorer Notes first. Look for different note boost types rather than repeatedly collecting the same type. The documented 2× and 4× effects can stack to produce an 8× experience effect when the boost types are different. Repeating the same boost type extends its duration instead of multiplying the effect again.
- Use the entire buff immediately. Start crafting or hunting as soon as the note multiplier is active. A new character can use a common Island note route to reach roughly level 70 in less than 15 minutes, according to the ARK Official Community Wiki; your route, map, settings and server configuration can change that result.
- Add Broth of Enlightenment if you have it. The broth is documented as multiplying experience earned by 150%. Using it before the boosted crafting or hunting segment is a logical combination of the two documented effects, but the combined result is an inference from those separate mechanics rather than a separately stated official multiplier.
- Switch activities as their value changes. Early crafting is safe and convenient. Cooking Pots, foundations and other structures become useful after the note run. Later, stronger creatures generally give better time efficiency than endlessly repeating low-value recipes.
How Explorer Note boosts work
Different boost types can stack
The official leveling documentation lists Explorer Notes among the game’s core experience methods and distinguishes between boost types. When you collect different types, a 2× effect and a 4× effect can combine into an 8× experience effect. This is why a planned note route is more valuable than collecting isolated notes at random while travelling.
Repeated boosts extend time
Collecting the same boost type again does not create another multiplication layer. Instead, it extends the active duration. If your goal is the fastest level gain, prioritize a route that reaches different boost types quickly, then spend the active window on an experience-producing activity.

Why the note run comes before crafting
Notes themselves are the setup, not the complete leveling strategy. Their temporary multiplier only matters while you are earning experience afterward. Starting a long trip, sorting storage or gathering without a plan wastes part of the window. Have your tools, resources and crafting queue ready before taking the final note that activates the strongest combination you can reach.
Explorer Notes versus other leveling methods
| Route | Preparation cost | Danger | Speed profile | Solo or tribe | Special requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Explorer Notes followed by crafting or hunting | Low material cost; requires route planning | Travel hazards can be significant on an unprepared character | Fastest for a fresh character; an Island run can reach about level 70 in under 15 minutes under documented conditions | Works solo; nearby tribemates can share the resulting experience | Access to a map containing the notes and a route you can execute |
| Continuous early crafting | Fiber, thatch, wood and other gathered resources | Low | Steady but slower than a successful note window | Good for solo players; tribe sharing helps groups | Unlocked engrams and a reliable resource supply |
| High-value structure crafting | Large quantities of wood, thatch, fiber and other materials | Low to moderate while gathering | Strong mid-game option; a Wooden Raft can outpace basic structures because it costs more resources | Efficient when several tribe members gather and craft | Resources and the relevant engrams |
| Creature hunting | Weapons, armor, ammunition and preferably useful tames | Higher and dependent on target | Scales with creature level and danger; usually more time-efficient late game | Strong for coordinated groups | Combat gear and targets appropriate to your power |
| Ascension rewards | End-game preparation and boss progression | End-game risk | Unlocks additional level capacity; not repeatable XP farming | Usually a tribe objective | Required boss and ascension progression |
There is no single activity that remains optimal at every level. Explorer Notes have the best opening burst, crafting is the dependable low-risk fallback, and hunting becomes more attractive as your weapons, armor and tames improve. Ascensions belong to the end-game level-cap path rather than the everyday experience loop.
What to craft at each stage
Levels 1 onward: Cloth Armor
Gather Fiber and keep the crafting queue active by making Cloth Armor. This is a practical first activity because Fiber is available immediately and the recipes can be repeated while you learn the area. Do not wait for a perfect base or storage setup before crafting; the goal is to turn your first gathered materials into experience.
After unlocking Spears
Once the Spear engram is available, repeat Spear crafting when you have the required materials. Spears add another early recipe to the queue and let you keep earning experience while collecting more Fiber and other basic supplies. Balance the queue against your survival needs so that crafting does not leave you without a weapon.
After an Explorer Note run: Cooking Pots
Cooking Pots are specifically highlighted by the official leveling page as high-experience items for their resource cost. Prepare the ingredients before activating your note window, then queue as many Pots as your materials allow. This is usually a better use of a strong temporary multiplier than making only the cheapest starter recipes.

Mid-game: foundations and other structures
When your inventory and resource access improve, craft foundations and other base structures. Structures consume more materials, so they become worthwhile when you can gather in bulk or have tribe members collecting while another player crafts. Keep enough resources for shelter, tools and repairs; a level gained is not useful if the process leaves you unable to survive.
Wooden Raft
A Wooden Raft can provide more experience than basic structures because its resource requirement is larger. Treat it as a resource-heavy experience project, not an automatic first craft. It makes sense when you already have the materials and are using an active multiplier; gathering those materials from scratch can erase the time advantage.
When crafting stops being efficient
Late-game crafting can become tedious because each additional level may require long resource runs and repeated queues. At that point, compare the time spent gathering and crafting with the experience available from a safe creature route. If your combat equipment is strong enough, hunting usually gives better time efficiency than repeating low-value recipes.
How to use Broth of Enlightenment
What the broth does
The ARK Official Community Wiki documents Broth of Enlightenment as multiplying experience earned by 150%. In practical planning, that means treating the broth as a 1.5× experience multiplier for the period in which it applies. The exact value should be read with the item’s current in-game description if your server or edition changes item behavior.
Best timing
- Collect the note boosts first, or position yourself at the point where the final boost will be collected.
- Put the resources, engrams and crafting stations you need within reach.
- Activate the Broth of Enlightenment immediately before the high-volume crafting or hunting segment.
- Begin the experience-producing activity without travelling, reorganizing inventory or performing unrelated chores.
Using the broth before the boosted segment is an inference from the documented effects of the broth and Explorer Notes. The sources establish each effect separately; they do not state a separately tested combined multiplier. Plan around that distinction instead of assuming a guaranteed formula beyond the individual bonuses.

When hunting is better than crafting
Experience scales with the target
Hunting experience increases with the level and danger of the creature killed. Start with manageable herbivores and progress toward stronger targets as your armor, weapons and tames improve. A high-level or dangerous target can be valuable, but only if you can kill it reliably without spending more time recovering from deaths, repairs or long ammunition runs.
A practical progression
- Unprepared character: choose manageable herbivores and avoid fights that can interrupt your note window.
- Basic gear and a tame: target creatures that your equipment can defeat consistently, then return to crafting if travel or healing consumes too much time.
- Established survivor: use stronger targets and coordinated routes where the experience per kill justifies the added danger.
- Late game: compare a complete hunting loop with a complete crafting loop, including gathering, travel, repairs and recovery. Hunting is generally more time-efficient than repetitive low-value crafting at this stage.
Server settings can change the balance dramatically. Increased experience rates make every method faster, while altered creature spawns, resource rates or difficulty can make a route safer or more dangerous than the same route on another server.
Solo leveling and Tribe Work
How shared experience helps
Tribe Work shares experience with nearby tribemates when one player gains experience. A group can therefore coordinate an Explorer Note run, a crafting session or a hunting route instead of having every survivor perform the entire process separately.
Organize a group session
- Keep the players who need experience close enough for the sharing mechanic to apply.
- Assign gathering, transport and crafting tasks before the boost starts.
- Have one player collect the note route while the group remains positioned to benefit from the subsequent crafting or hunting.
- Use the same safety rules as solo play: preserve weapons, armor, food and a recovery plan rather than sacrificing the group to a risky target.
Tribe Work does not remove the need for suitable equipment or proximity. A distant player, a disconnected survivor or a member outside the sharing range may not receive the same benefit, so keep the group together during the actual experience activity.

The official levels documentation reports a maximum player level of 245 as of August 28, 2026. An ascension page describes the same 245 cap as of October 2026. These dates matter because ARK: Survival Ascended can change as updates add maps, notes or progression systems.

What normal progression provides
Normal progression supplies 104 additional levels beyond the starting level. The remaining levels come from several end-game and collection systems:
- Alpha ascensions
- Explorer Note collections
- Chibi progression
- Selected downloadable-content Explorer Note collections
That distinction explains why ordinary crafting or hunting cannot carry a character all the way to 245 by itself. Those activities provide experience within the normal progression track; ascensions and collection milestones expand the available level ceiling.
Do not confuse XP farming with level unlocks
Ascension rewards are end-game level unlocks rather than repeatable experience farming. You still need the normal experience route to progress through available levels, but completing the relevant ascension content is what opens additional capacity beyond ordinary progression.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A complete fast-level plan
Before spawning or starting a new survivor
- Choose a map and server setting you understand; note routes and experience rates vary.
- Decide whether you are running solo or with a tribe.
- Plan where you will craft immediately after collecting boosts.
- If you have Broth of Enlightenment, keep it ready for the boosted segment rather than consuming it during travel.
First resource pass
- Gather enough Fiber and basic materials to make starter clothing, tools and a weapon.
- Unlock Cloth Armor and keep crafting it while collecting what you need for survival.
- Unlock Spears when available and add them to the queue.
- Do not overbuild your first shelter before the note route; save time and materials for the experience window.
Execute the note route
- Follow a known Explorer Note path rather than wandering between isolated notes.
- Prioritize different boost types because the documented 2× and 4× effects can combine into 8×.
- Collect repeated types only when extending duration is more useful than searching for another type.
- Keep the route short enough that most of the active time remains for crafting or hunting.
Convert the multiplier into levels
- Use Broth of Enlightenment immediately before the production segment if you have one.
- Queue Cooking Pots first when their materials are available.
- Move to foundations, other structures or a Wooden Raft as your resource stockpile allows.
- If materials are limited or crafting becomes slower than combat, hunt manageable creatures instead.
Continue after the opening burst
Once the note effect ends, maintain a loop that matches your current strength: gather and craft while resources are abundant, then hunt when combat yields more experience per minute. Reassess after major gear or tame upgrades rather than committing permanently to one method.
Troubleshooting a slow leveling run
You reached only a few levels from the notes
Check whether you collected different boost types, whether the multiplier was active during crafting or hunting, and whether travel consumed most of the duration. The documented under-15-minute result is route- and settings-dependent, not a guarantee for every map or server.
Best Value
The second note did not multiply experience again
It was probably the same boost type. The documented behavior is duration extension for repeated types; seek a different type when you want another multiplier layer.

Crafting feels slower than expected
Include gathering, hauling, station access and inventory management in your calculation. Switch from low-value recipes to Cooking Pots, structures or a Wooden Raft when you have the materials, and move to hunting when a combat route is faster.
Hunting causes more deaths than levels
Drop to manageable herbivores, improve armor and weapons, use a suitable tame, and keep a recovery route. Experience gained from a dangerous creature is not efficient if replacing equipment or retrieving a body takes longer than a safer activity.
Tribe members are not receiving shared experience
Confirm that the players are nearby during the experience event and that they are in the same tribe. Distance, disconnection or performing the activity outside the sharing range can prevent the expected Tribe Work benefit.
Best method by player situation
| Your situation | Recommended priority | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Brand-new survivor with little gear | Explorer Notes, then Cloth Armor, Spears or Cooking Pots | Notes provide the largest opening burst, while early recipes are safe and inexpensive. |
| Solo player with plentiful basic resources | Cooking Pots, foundations and other structures | Crafting avoids combat risk and converts a large stockpile into steady experience. |
| Mid-game player with a strong resource base | Foundations, structures or a Wooden Raft during a boost | Higher material requirements can produce better experience than starter recipes. |
| Well-equipped player with reliable tames | Hunting higher-value creatures | Creature level and danger increase the potential experience, and combat becomes faster with better equipment. |
| End-game player pursuing 245 | Normal XP route plus ascensions and collection milestones | The cap requires more than repeatable crafting or hunting; additional levels come from specified end-game systems. |
Bottom line
For a new survivor, prepare a short Explorer Note route, collect different boost types, and spend the active multiplier on Cooking Pots or another high-volume activity. Add Broth of Enlightenment before that segment when available. Use crafting as the safe resource-based method, change to hunting when your combat power makes it faster, and treat ascensions, Chibi progression and eligible note collections as level-cap unlocks rather than ordinary XP farming. Under the documented Island conditions, this approach can take a character from level 1 to approximately 70 in under 15 minutes, while the current reported maximum level is 245.
