What you need before fishing
Craft the Fishing Rod
The Fishing Rod unlocks at level 18. Its published crafting cost is 12 Wood, 50 Fiber and 20 Thatch. The rod alone is not enough: you must use bait and be seated on a supported platform.

Use a supported seat or mount
Fishing requires you to sit on a Wooden Chair, Wooden Bench, Canoe or Pelagornis in the water. A chair or bench placed at the shoreline is useful for a fixed fishing spot; a Canoe or Pelagornis lets you reposition over a school of fish.
Find a visible target
Cast close to a visible Coelacanth, Sabertooth Salmon or Piranha. Fishing is not a blind cast into any random water tile: look for the fish first, then place the bobber near it.

Why Honey is the large-fish choice
Giant Bee Honey has the largest published maximum size, 2.4, so choose it when your objective is a catch at the top of the table rather than conserving bait. The source does not provide a numeric loot table for each size, so do not treat 2.4 as a guaranteed reward tier; it is the maximum fish size associated with that bait.
Why Leech Blood is the flexible choice
Leech Blood reaches all three listed species and has the highest bait coefficient. It is the sensible general-purpose supply when you are moving between fishing spots and do not want to carry separate bait for each target. Its maximum size, 1.88, is lower than Honey’s published limit.
When Sap still makes sense

How to fish with the Fishing Rod
- Reach level 18 and craft the rod. Gather 12 Wood, 50 Fiber and 20 Thatch, then craft the Fishing Rod.
- Choose bait. Use Sap for Coelacanth-only fishing, Leech Blood for broad coverage, or Giant Bee Honey for the highest listed size limit.
- Set up a seat. Place a Wooden Chair or Wooden Bench by the water, or use a Canoe or Pelagornis in the water.
- Load the rod and sit down. Apply the bait to the Fishing Rod, then take the seated position. The official Fishing Rod description specifies applying bait and using the rod while sitting.
- Cast near a fish. Aim for a visible Coelacanth, Sabertooth Salmon or Piranha rather than empty water.
- Watch for the bite prompt. When a fish bites, complete the quick-time prompts shown on screen. Missing the prompt ends that attempt; repeat the cast with a fresh target.
- Reposition if necessary. If fish are outside casting range, move the chair, paddle the Canoe or reposition the Pelagornis instead of repeatedly casting into an empty area.
The official description summarizes the core loop as: “Apply various bait to this, and then use when sitting on a chair or bench to catch some fish!” The supported Canoe and Pelagornis positions extend that same seated requirement to mobile fishing.

How to choose bait for a fishing session
You need one specific fish
Use Sap only when Coelacanth is the intended catch. If the location also contains Salmon or Piranha, Sap prevents those species from being targets according to the published table.
You are scouting unfamiliar water
Carry Leech Blood. It covers every species named in the table and has the strongest bait coefficient, giving you the broadest chance to fish without changing supplies. Keep the 1.88 maximum size in mind if size is the priority.
You are deliberately hunting large fish
Use Giant Bee Honey. Its 2.4 maximum is the highest listed value. Because Honey is highly perishable, attach it to the Fishing Rod rather than storing it loose when you are preparing a longer trip. Reserve the supply if you also need Sweet Vegetable Cake or Extraordinary Kibble.
You are comparing expected loot
Use the maximum-size column as the reliable comparison available from the published table. The available material does not state exact item quantities, quality rolls or drop probabilities by fish size, so a larger permitted fish should not be described as a guaranteed higher-quality loot result.

Build a practical expedition loadout
Underwater cave run
- Cook Lazarus Chowder with the stated meat, vegetables, berries, Narcotic and water.

The fish you want is not biting
Check the bait table first. Sap is restricted to Coelacanth; Leech Blood and Giant Bee Honey cover all three listed species. Switching from Sap to one of the broader baits is the direct fix when Salmon or Piranha is the target.
Honey disappeared from storage
Giant Bee Honey is highly perishable. Attaching it to the Fishing Rod preserves it, so load the bait before a long trip instead of leaving loose Honey in an ordinary inventory.
A recipe will not cook
