The reliable way to collect them is to select the correct map and game edition, use an Explorer Map to locate a marker, travel to the marker or its nearby landmark, and verify the entry in your in-game tracker. A normal note awards 100 XP to you and the ridden tame, activates a 10-minute XP boost, and completing the full collection unlocks 10 additional Survivor levels.

What Explorer Notes are in ARK
Explorer Notes are collectible records left by survivors. They expand ARK’s story through written entries and recorded conversations, so collecting them is both a lore activity and a progression strategy. Most are placed in the world as objects that become available when your character reaches them.

The canonical story-ARK collection covers seven maps:
| Story ARK | What to verify before routing |
|---|---|
| The Island | Use the Explorer Map context that matches ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE) or ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA). |
| Scorched Earth | Confirm the Scorched Earth map and the edition you are playing before copying coordinates. |
| Aberration | Plan for locations that may require careful cave or hazard access; confirm the current map data. |
| Extinction | Check the map-specific marker and the safest approach route rather than relying on latitude and longitude alone. |
| Genesis: Part 1 | Verify that the Explorer Map and note entry belong to Genesis: Part 1, not Part 2. |
| Genesis: Part 2 | Use a Part 2 marker set and check any map-specific access requirement shown for the entry. |
| Lost Colony | Use the current Lost Colony data for your game edition; do not substitute coordinates from another map. |
Other ARK maps can have map content and map tools, but the story-ARK list above is the defined scope for the canonical Explorer Note collection. Do not assume that every non-story map has the same note placement, reward behavior, or completion rules.

Explorer Notes versus creature records
Creature records are a related but separate collectible category. A creature record concentrates on a creature species, while a survivor Explorer Note records a person’s experience, observations, or conversation. A route or completion tracker should label creature records separately so that a missing creature record is not mistaken for a missing narrative note.
How collecting a note works
Normal collection
- Travel to the note’s world location. Most notes are collected simply by walking or flying into the object or marker area.
- Wait for the pickup or discovery notification, then open your Explorer Note tracker to confirm that the entry is recorded.
- If you are riding a tame, the normal note grants 100 XP to your character and 100 XP to the tame being ridden.
After a normal discovery, the “Explorer Note Found!” status effect doubles XP gain for 10 minutes. The effect does not stack when you collect several regular notes in succession. Picking up another regular note extends the effect’s expiration instead of multiplying it.
Special Explorer Note Found!
She Who Waits notes, and notes affected by certain single-player settings, use a “Special Explorer Note Found!” variant. This variant quadruples XP. It can stack with the regular Explorer Note Found! effect, producing a temporary eight-times XP multiplier when both effects are active. Treat that as a separate status effect rather than assuming every marker provides the same boost.
Completion reward
Collecting every Explorer Note unlocks 10 additional Survivor levels. The reward is tied to the complete collection, not to finding one note on each map. Because authoritative per-map totals are not established in the available location material, use the in-game tracker and the current map list as your completion check instead of relying on an assumed number of notes.

Find exact locations with maps and coordinates
The official location table records each entry’s map, type, topic, author, latitude, longitude, location description, and ID. Those fields let you build a route that is more useful than a coordinate-only list.
Recommended location workflow
- Choose the edition and map. Decide whether you are playing ASE or ASA, then select the exact story ARK. Map geometry and marker data can differ between editions.
- Open the matching Explorer Map. Explorer Maps show Explorer Notes alongside other points of interest such as cave entrances, loot crates, artifacts, deep-sea and desert loot crates, and supply crates. Filter the display to Explorer Note markers.
- Match the table entry. Compare the marker’s topic, author, ID, latitude, longitude, and location description. Matching more than the coordinates prevents a similarly placed marker from being selected by mistake.
- Copy a nearby landmark. Record the description of a rock formation, structure, cave entrance, coastline feature, or other nearby landmark. The landmark is often more reliable than a rounded coordinate when you are close to the destination.
- Travel with an appropriate option. Use foot travel, a flyer, or a mount according to the terrain and your server’s rules. For a cave or hazardous approach, bring the equipment and backup mount you normally use for that map.
- Confirm the pickup in game. A marker disappearing from a third-party map is not proof of collection. Check the in-game Explorer Note tracker after the discovery.
Why coordinates can appear “wrong”
Latitude and longitude are navigation aids, not a guarantee that your character can stand directly on the marker. Cave geometry, vertical elevation, entrances, collision, and differences between ASE and ASA can move the practical approach away from the plotted point. If a coordinate seems empty, check the entry’s location description, inspect nearby cave entrances or vertical levels, and verify that the map and edition filters are correct.

The Island
The Island is the original story map and has a dedicated interactive Explorer Map with Explorer Note markers. That map distinguishes ARK: Survival Evolved and ARK: Survival Ascended contexts, so choose the edition before using a marker. Build routes by region or by nearby landmarks, then confirm each pickup in the tracker. Do not combine a coordinate copied from one edition with a route displayed for the other.
Scorched Earth
Scorched Earth is part of the canonical story collection. Before setting out, select Scorched Earth in the location table and Explorer Map, then check whether the marker is exposed or requires a more involved approach. Carry enough supplies for the route you selected and record the landmark description with the coordinates; a coordinate alone does not describe the safest way to reach the note.

Aberration
Aberration notes belong to the story collection and should be routed with special attention to cave and hazard access. Use the map’s marker and the table’s location description together. If a marker appears to be inside a vertical or enclosed area, locate the correct entrance first instead of trying to reach the latitude and longitude in a straight line.
Extinction
For Extinction, filter the Explorer Map to Extinction notes and check each entry’s ID and nearby landmark. Grouping notes by practical travel area can reduce backtracking, but keep the tracker open because a nearby marker may belong to a different topic or author. If terrain blocks the direct route, follow the described landmark sequence rather than treating the plotted point as a precise landing spot.
Recommended Free Tools
Genesis: Part 1
Genesis: Part 1 has its own entries and must not be mixed with Genesis: Part 2. Select the correct map before copying coordinates, and read the location description for any map-specific access condition. Verify each pickup in the tracker because a marker from the wrong Genesis map can look plausible while never completing the Part 1 entry.
Genesis: Part 2
Use a Part 2 marker set and confirm the map label on every route segment. Where the map data identifies a special access requirement, plan around that requirement before leaving your base. Keep a separate checklist for Part 2 so that notes collected on Part 1 do not create false completion assumptions.

Lost Colony
Lost Colony is included in the canonical story-ARK list. Use current Lost Colony location data for your edition and treat coordinates as approximate navigation points until you verify the nearby landmark. Because map data can be updated or presented differently across editions, check the marker’s topic, author, and ID before marking an entry complete.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build a dependable completion route
Prepare your checklist
- Write the map name, note ID, topic, author, latitude, longitude, and landmark description for each planned stop.
- Keep separate lists for narrative Explorer Notes and creature records.
- Mark a note complete only after the in-game tracker records it.
- Record the game edition beside every coordinate.
- Plan a return route for locations that require a cave entrance, vertical movement, or a hazardous approach.
Use XP boosts deliberately
Because a regular note doubles XP for 10 minutes and a second regular note extends rather than stacks the duration, route several nearby notes into one travel window when you are leveling. If you discover a Special Explorer Note Found! effect, you can combine it with the regular effect for the temporary eight-times multiplier. Do not delay a pickup solely to preserve a regular boost: the tracker completion is permanent, while the status effect is timed.
Audit a map before moving on
When you finish a route, compare your checklist with the tracker immediately. Missing entries are easier to diagnose while you still remember the last landmark and direction. If the tracker shows a gap, search by the missing entry’s ID or topic rather than revisiting every marker at random.
Troubleshooting missing or unregistered notes
The marker is visible but the note does not trigger
- Confirm that the map and game edition match the marker source.
- Move around the landmark, including above and below it, because vertical placement can matter.
- Check whether the marker is inside a cave or behind an entrance rather than at the surface coordinate.
- Look for a duplicate-looking marker and compare the topic, author, and ID.
- Leave the area and return, then check the in-game tracker again.
The tracker still shows an entry as missing
Use the location table’s ID to identify the exact entry. Recheck the map filter, then compare the coordinate with the landmark description. If you changed from ASE to ASA, or the reverse, obtain the marker for that edition instead of trying to correct the old coordinate manually.
Best Value
A route is impossible with your current character
Do not treat a completion route as a requirement to use a particular mount or exploit. Re-plan the approach around the documented landmark, bring the equipment appropriate to the map, or return after unlocking the normal access needed for that location. The note itself is a collectible; the route can be postponed without losing progress already recorded.
Administrative commands and alternate access
Server administrators have an optional shortcut commonly referred to as GiveAllExplorerNotes. A third-party command index also catalogs per-note administrative commands. These tools are not required for legitimate collection and may be restricted by server policy, platform, or game edition.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use commands responsibly
- Confirm that you have administrator permission and that command use is allowed on the server.
- Back up or otherwise protect your save before applying a bulk unlock.
- Expect command syntax and behavior to vary between ASE, ASA, single-player, and hosted servers; use the command reference for your exact environment.
- After running an approved command, check the Explorer Note tracker and Survivor-level total rather than assuming every entry was registered.
- Keep command-based unlocks separate from a normal route checklist so you know which notes were physically visited.
Administrative access changes how entries are granted; it does not change the distinction between narrative notes and creature records or the map scope of the canonical collection.
What to verify before claiming completion
- All seven canonical story maps have been checked: The Island, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Genesis: Part 1, Genesis: Part 2, and Lost Colony.
- Your checklist uses the correct ASE or ASA context for every coordinate.
- Every planned marker has been confirmed in the in-game tracker.
- Creature records have not been counted as narrative Explorer Notes, or vice versa.
- The tracker reflects the full collection and the 10 additional Survivor levels are available.
Interactive maps and location tables are useful navigation tools, but they should be treated as version-sensitive references. Check their current completeness and match every marker to an in-game confirmation before considering the collection finished.
