Arizona Court Cyberattack: What’s Known About the Records Stolen

Arizona court officials say a cyberattack copied personally identifiable information from court records. The Associated Press reported on October 6, 2026, that the records were associated with 1.3 million people with unpaid court fees, fines or restitution, nearly 30,000 active and inactive orders of protection, and 150,000 foster-care-board reports. Those are separate record categories, not a confirmed count of unique people; the court has not said which specific data fields were exposed for each person.

What happened in the Arizona court cyberattack?

The Arizona Supreme Court announced on September 25, 2026, that criminal hackers or bots had targeted the state court system. The court said its IT staff discovered the attack, acted to stop it and believed personally identifiable information had been copied. Chief Justice Ann Scott Timmer said the court assembled a response team after learning of the attack. The court’s September 25 notice said it was alerting as many people as possible whom it believed were affected.

According to Associated Press reporting published October 6, 2026, court staff discovered the attack on September 24 and shut it down on a backup server about two hours later. The public announcement followed the next day. The court has not publicly identified the attackers or confirmed how they first gained access.

What information did hackers take from Arizona courts?

The AP reported three categories of copied records, based on figures from the Arizona Supreme Court:

#1 Best Overall
Veltec ID Protector Ink Roller - Identity Theft Protection Roller Stamp Set (Blue, Stamp+3 Refills)

The ID Defender Roller Stamp offers a simple yet effective solution. With a unique wide camouflage pattern, it quickly and easily conceals sensitive data on a variety of surfaces.
  • PRIVACY PROTECTION: useful not only as an ADDRESS BLOCKER or ID POLICE, but also keeps away preying eyes from invoices, authority documents, checks, bank statements and many more.
  • SIMPLE TO USE: Just remove the cover and swipe. The wide swipe makes it easy to cover sensitive information.
  • VERSATILE APPLICATION: Ideal for a variety of documents, including contracts, court documents, shipping labels, tax returns and more.
  • LONG-LASTING INK: The high-quality ink works on both glossy and standard paper and provides up to 330 feet of coverage.
Record category Reported scale and time range
People associated with unpaid court fees, fines or restitution for traffic and criminal violations Information associated with 1.3 million people; records dated back as far as 30 years, according to the AP.
Orders of protection Nearly 30,000 active and inactive orders, according to the AP.
Foster-care-board reports 150,000 reports dating back to 2010, according to the AP. The board makes recommendations in cases involving parents alleged to be unfit or unable to care for a child.

The figures describe records or people associated with separate categories; they should not be added together as a total number of affected individuals. The AP report does not establish whether the categories overlap. Nor has the court published a complete account of the exact information fields copied for each person, so the reported scale does not mean every person had the same details exposed.

Was my information stolen in the Arizona court cyberattack?

The public information available does not provide a complete list of affected people or establish a public deadline for notifying everyone. The court said it was contacting as many people as it could identify as potentially affected, but a person’s presence in one of the reported record categories does not by itself reveal which fields, if any, were copied in that person’s case.

What should I do if I got a notice from the Arizona courts?

First, verify that the notice and any contact details or links match information on the official court alert hub. The court’s public materials reviewed do not provide a full incident-specific response checklist. The following are general steps recommended by the Federal Trade Commission for identity-theft concerns, not special instructions from Arizona courts:

The FTC says a fraud alert and a credit freeze are both free, but they work differently:

Protection Cost and setup Effect and trade-off
Fraud alert Free. Contact one of the nationwide credit bureaus; it can pass the alert to the other two. Signals that lenders should take extra steps to verify your identity before opening new credit. It does not block access to your credit file.
Credit freeze Free. Request it separately from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Can make it harder for someone to open new credit in your name. You may need to lift the freeze when applying for credit.

These protections address credit-related risks; they do not prevent every type of misuse. The FTC’s IdentityTheft.gov recovery steps explain how to choose actions based on what happened. Paid identity monitoring is not required for these free steps and cannot prevent all misuse.

Where can I check for Arizona court breach updates?

The Arizona Judicial Branch’s Cybersecurity Alert hub is the official public update point for the incident. Check it directly rather than relying on an unexpected email or text. The court’s notice and policies are the relevant sources for its notification process; the Arizona Attorney General’s FAQ explains that courts are excluded from the coverage of the state notification law described there, so the business notification deadline in that law should not be assumed to govern this court incident.
