Arista Takes Its Ethernet Challenge to Nvidia’s AI Scale-Up Fabric

Arista has announced a rack-scale Ethernet architecture intended to connect AI accelerators within and across racks, putting it in strategic competition with Nvidia’s NVLink fabric. Its Etherlink SU-144 design is specified by Arista for up to 144 accelerators in one rack and as many as 1,024 across multiple racks. Those are vendor-stated capacities, not evidence that the design matches Nvidia on measured performance or deployment maturity.

What Arista announced

On October 7, 2026, Arista introduced an open Ethernet portfolio for AI infrastructure that covers both scale-up and scale-out networking. Scale-up connects accelerators closely within a system or rack; scale-out connects systems across a larger cluster. Arista’s announcement combines an ESUN-based scale-up architecture, Etherlink SU-144, with rack designs and Ethernet scale-out reference architectures.

Arista describes Ethernet for Scale-Up Networking (ESUN) as an open approach to tightly coupled AI fabrics. In an October 7 technical blog, Arista authors Arihant Jain and Vijay Vusirikala said ESUN focuses on open Ethernet switching and framing, including lossless delivery, error resiliency, and scale. That is the company’s technical framing; the announcement does not provide independent performance measurements.

How Etherlink SU-144 is intended to scale

Arista says Etherlink SU-144 can connect up to 144 XPUs—accelerators such as GPUs—in one rack using a single-hop network. Cross-rack topologies are described as scaling to as many as 1,024 XPUs. These are design capacities stated by Arista, not independently validated deployment results.

The company presented three physical approaches to building the scale-up domain:

Design How it is arranged Intended fit
Orthogonal chassis Accelerator blades connect directly to switch blades. Dense training and inference installations. Arista specifies a 100–400 kW liquid-cooling envelope for this design.
Cabled backplane Dense cabling is combined with a modular rack structure designed for serviceability. Installations that need a rack-scale fabric with modular, serviceable components.
Cross-rack system The scale-up domain extends across multiple racks. Larger accelerator groupings that exceed a single-rack configuration.

The 144-XPU and 1,024-XPU figures describe different topologies: the former is the stated single-rack maximum, while the latter is the stated maximum across cross-rack configurations. Neither figure establishes how a real workload performs at that scale.

Scale-out is part of the portfolio, too

Arista’s announcement also describes heterogeneous Ethernet scale-out designs using features associated with the Ultra Ethernet Consortium (UEC), including Multipath Reliable Connection (MRC) resiliency, multi-plane routing, Dynamic Load Balancing (DLB), and Cluster Load Balancing (CLB). Fierce Network reported reference designs with 8-, 12-, and 16-switch configurations.

The listed rack components extend well beyond network switches: Arista names 7060EX7 switches, fiber patch panels, integrated liquid-cooling manifolds, drip trays with active leak detection, rack management controllers, and power shelves with backup battery units. Arista specifies 102.4 Tbps of capacity per 7060EX7 switch. The combination makes this a rack and systems-integration proposal, not simply a switch refresh.

Arista says its designs can support scale-up protocols including ESUN, Nvidia NVLink, NVLink Fusion, or PCIe within scale-out networking solutions. That points to a portfolio intended to accommodate different system architectures; it does not mean every component is an alternative to Nvidia’s scale-up fabric.

What the Nvidia comparison does—and does not—show

Arista presents ESUN Ethernet as an open, standards-based alternative that can give operators choices among accelerators, switching silicon, optics, rack designs, and network software. Network World reported that Arista positions the approach against proprietary NVLink and InfiniBand stacks. Arista executive Hardev Singh summarized the company’s approach as “Strictly Ethernet.”

Openness and choice are architectural distinctions, not proof of faster or lower-latency networking. The October announcement and related coverage do not provide an independent, workload-matched comparison of Arista and Nvidia for bandwidth, latency, collective operations, or performance at a comparable scale. Nor do they establish confirmed customer deployments, pricing, or a firm general-availability date.

A fair comparison will need to examine more than advertised XPU counts. Relevant measures include scale-up topology and domain size; supported accelerator ecosystems; standards governance and interoperability; measured bandwidth, latency, and collective-operation performance on comparable workloads; software and operational tools; power, cooling, resilience, diagnostics, deployment maturity, and total system cost. The available announcement establishes some architecture and ecosystem details, but not the comparative results or costs.

Capacity and density claims to treat as projections

Arista says next-generation optics could increase rack capacity from 1.6 Pb/s with OSFP-based switches to 6.5 Pb/s, and that the resulting densification could reduce overall data-center footprint by nearly 50%. These are company claims about potential capacity and footprint, not independently verified outcomes. Actual results would depend on the deployed configuration and facility requirements.

Fierce Network reported a market forecast from Alan Weckel of 650 Group: a scale-up market of about $20 billion in 2026 growing to $105 billion in 2030, with Ethernet below $1 billion in 2026 and reaching $30 billion in 2030. These are analyst estimates reported by Fierce Network, not realized market totals.

Partners and standards are not the same thing

Arista named AMD, Arm, Broadcom, d-Matrix, Meta, Microsoft, and Qualcomm as partners in the rack-scale effort. Their inclusion signals a broad ecosystem ambition, but the announcement alone does not establish the precise scope of each partner’s participation or guarantee compatibility across every combination of hardware and software.

ESUN and the Ultra Ethernet Consortium are related but distinct initiatives. ESUN is Arista’s scale-up networking approach; UEC is an industry consortium whose features Arista references in its scale-out designs. The two should not be treated as interchangeable or as having identical membership and scope.

What infrastructure teams should verify

  • Topology and scale: Confirm the required accelerator count, whether it fits within one rack, and how cross-rack links affect the intended workload.
  • Workload evidence: Request comparable measurements for bandwidth, latency, and collective operations, rather than inferring performance from switch capacity or XPU limits.
  • System compatibility: Establish which accelerator, switching, optics, protocol, and software combinations are supported in the exact proposed configuration.
  • Facility readiness: Validate rack power, liquid-cooling capacity, floor-space assumptions, cabling, service access, and leak-detection procedures against the deployment site.
  • Operational maturity: Ask about availability, support, diagnostics, failure recovery, and reference deployments before treating a design capacity as an operationally proven cluster.
  • Total cost: Compare the complete system—including racks, cooling, optics, power, software, and operations—with alternatives, rather than comparing switch prices alone.

Arista’s October 7 announcement also states that forward-looking statements are subject to risks and uncertainties. Buyers should therefore distinguish stated product architecture and specifications from future-looking capacity, density, and footprint outcomes.
