Arista’s October 7, 2026 announcement treats Ethernet as part of the AI rack-scale compute system, not merely a link between separate servers. Its Etherlink SU-144 scale-up architecture is paired with scale-out networking, with three physical designs for connecting accelerators within and across racks. “Backplane” is Arista’s framing for that integrated networking role: it does not mean Ethernet has become a passive electrical backplane or that the design replaces every accelerator’s internal interconnect.
What changes when Ethernet becomes part of the rack?
In a conventional description, a network connects compute systems. Arista’s announcement instead presents Ethernet as a fabric designed into the rack alongside accelerators, switches, cooling, power, and rack-management hardware. The aim is to connect accelerators at scale-up distances within a rack and extend connectivity across racks through scale-out networking.

Arista executive Tyson Lamoreaux described the idea this way: “The network in the AI era is no longer just an independent pipe between servers. It’s now a tightly integrated rack-scale backplane that is essential to maximizing compute.” — Arista Networks, October 7, 2026. The term “backplane” here conveys integration and architectural importance; it is not a claim that Ethernet has become a passive board or that all accelerator communication moves onto Ethernet.
What is Etherlink SU-144?
Etherlink SU-144 is Arista’s named scale-up architecture for connecting accelerators, or XPUs, in an AI rack-scale system. Arista says it can support up to 144 accelerators in a single-hop network and up to 1,024 XPUs through cross-rack topologies. Those are vendor-announced maximum architecture figures, not independently verified performance results.

The associated scale-out portfolio is described as compatible with scale-up protocols including ESUN, NVIDIA NVLink, NVLink Fusion, and PCIe. Arista also cites Ultra Ethernet Consortium standards, Multipath Reliable Connection (MRC) resiliency, multi-plane routing, Dynamic Load Balancing (DLB), and Cluster Load Balancing (CLB). The announcement names these capabilities but does not provide workload test results or configuration guidance for a particular deployment.
How the three rack designs differ
Arista describes three physical forms. The choice is about topology, rack construction, cooling envelope, and expansion path; the announcement does not provide comparative cost or independent performance measurements.

| Design | Topology and expansion | Serviceability and cooling |
|---|---|---|
| Orthogonal chassis | Direct orthogonal connectivity between accelerator and switch blades; Arista describes it as a single-rack, single-hop design. | Arista says it supports 100–400 kW liquid-cooling envelopes. The release does not give a comparative serviceability assessment. |
| Cabled backplane | Dense cabling connects components in a modular rack structure. | Arista describes the rack as modular and serviceable. No cooling envelope or comparative measurement is stated. |
| Cross-rack system | A modular fabric extends scale-up across multiple racks; Arista cites up to 1,024 XPUs through cross-rack topologies. | The announcement does not state a cooling envelope or compare serviceability with the other designs. |
The orthogonal design is the clearest fit in the announcement for a single-rack, single-hop topology. The cabled design emphasizes dense interconnects and a modular rack, while the cross-rack system is the stated path for scaling beyond one rack. The release does not establish which is faster, cheaper, or preferable for a given workload.
What hardware and density figures did Arista announce?
The announced rack includes multiple liquid-cooled 7060EX7 switches, fiber patch panels, liquid-cooling manifolds, drip trays with active leak detection, rack-management controllers, and power shelves with backup battery units. Arista says each 7060EX7 switch has 102.4 Tbps capacity.

Arista also gives two rack-level switching-capacity figures: 1.6 Pb/s per rack for current OSFP-based switches and 6.5 Pb/s per rack with next-generation optics. It identifies XPO and open CPO/NPO as next-generation optics options. Arista claims the higher density can reduce overall data-center footprint by nearly 50%, but the announcement supplies no methodology for that comparison. All of these figures and capabilities are company claims; no independent testing or verification is established by the announcement.

Arista names AMD, Arm, Broadcom, d-Matrix, Meta, Microsoft, and Qualcomm as engineering partners, and says the work leverages the Ethernet for Scale-up Networks initiative. The announcement does not specify what each partner contributed, so their inclusion should not be read as attribution for any particular component or design choice.
