The Nikon Z5IIc drops the electronic viewfinder from the Z5II, making its articulated rear screen the only way to compose. That design will suit some photographers and frustrate others. Nigel Atherton’s point in Amateur Photographer is that a camera can be a good fit for its intended users without being the right choice for everyone.

Why is Nikon’s Z5IIc upsetting some photographers?

The complaint is easy to understand: the Z5IIc has no electronic viewfinder (EVF). If you normally bring a camera to your eye to compose, its rear display may feel like a basic feature has gone missing. Atherton captures that reaction with the questions “Wot, no viewfinder?” and “And they call this a serious camera?” Those are reader-style objections raised in his opinion piece, not evidence that photographers generally share them.

The Z5IIc is a full-frame mirrorless camera whose composition design centres on its articulated rear touchscreen. The launch report describes that screen as 3.2 inches with 1.02 million dots. If a viewfinder is essential to you, the Nikon Z5II remains the direct alternative identified in the reported lineup.

What changes when you compose on the rear screen?

For photographers already comfortable framing on a display, a screen-only camera may feel natural, particularly when working at unusual angles or recording video. Atherton argues that photographers’ habits differ; his observations about age and smartphone use are opinion, not findings from a cited survey. The useful question is less whether one way of composing is superior than whether it suits the way you actually shoot.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Bright conditions: Consider how often you need to see a composition outdoors or in strong light. If you prefer the enclosed viewing experience of an EVF, the Z5IIc’s screen-only design is a meaningful drawback.
  • Comfort and stability: Think about whether you prefer holding a camera to your face or composing with it held away from you. The better choice depends on your habits and shooting situations.
  • Video and varied angles: A rear articulated screen can make it easier to monitor framing from positions where looking through a viewfinder is awkward.

Z5IIc or Z5II: which better fits your priorities?

Composition No EVF; compose on the articulated rear screen. The option identified by the launch coverage for photographers who want a viewfinder.
Card slots One SD-card slot, according to the launch report. Two card slots, according to the launch report.
Best fit if… You are happy composing on a rear screen and prefer this model’s screen-only design. You want an EVF or prefer having two card slots.

The launch report described the Z5IIc as a 24.5MP full-frame camera with in-body image stabilization. It listed headline video modes of 4K/30p and 4K/60p with a crop. Those are reported specifications, not results from a hands-on test here.

The same September 24, 2026 launch report listed recommended body-only pricing of $1,400 in the US and £1,349 in the UK, and a 24–50mm kit at $1,700 and £1,609. It said the camera was due on sale in mid-October 2026. These are historical report details; check a current regional retailer for today’s price and availability.

Does the Z5IIc have a clear niche?

The launch coverage named the Panasonic Lumix S9 as another full-frame camera without a viewfinder and with an articulated screen. Its comparison also noted that the Nikon retains a mechanical shutter and handgrip, and described Nikon’s positioning as aimed at both still photography and video. These are the launch writer’s descriptions, not the result of a comparative hands-on test.

A rangefinder-style Nikon variant for street photographers is a thought experiment Atherton raises, not an announced or existing Z5II model in the cited coverage. It should not be confused with the Z5IIc.

A camera does not have to suit every photographer

A missing EVF is a genuine reason to choose a different camera if you rely on one. It does not, by itself, make the Z5IIc a failed product. Atherton’s conclusion is simple: “The bottom line is that not every camera that comes out has to be tailored to your specific needs.” He adds, “It’s okay if manufacturers make cameras for other types of people too.”

Choose by your own priorities: screen-based composition versus an EVF, one versus two card slots, and how the camera feels for the kind of photography you do. The Z5IIc is for photographers who can accept its screen-only approach; the Z5II is the clearer fit if a viewfinder matters.
