Stalin raised the challenge at a Dharapuram campaign rally on October 2, 2026, four days before the October 6 by-election. The accusation is Stalin’s; the reports do not establish Vijay’s reasons for his public comments.
What did Stalin say about Vijay?
Hindustan Times, attributing its account to PTI, reported that Stalin challenged Vijay over what he described as silence on SIR and the CEC controversy. Stalin was quoted as saying: “What is your fear, CM sir what is the fear? If you cannot open your mouth even on an issue on which all leaders across the country are speaking, what is the reason behind it. CM sir, are you afraid of the BJP so much?”

That wording is a political accusation and rhetorical question, not evidence that Vijay was afraid of the BJP. The reports describe Stalin’s criticism but do not independently establish why Vijay had or had not addressed the issue. The New Indian Express and DT Next also reported on the exchange.

What are SIR and the CEC controversy?
SIR stands for Special Intensive Revision, a revision of electoral rolls. The CEC reference is to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. In coverage of the dispute, opposition parties alleged irregularities connected with SIR, while the Election Commission maintained that SIR decisions were taken with the concurrence of its members. Those are competing attributed positions; the reporting cited here does not independently resolve the allegations.

Is TVK silent on SIR?
Not according to The Week’s account: it reports that TVK has said it opposes SIR. The same report says the party argued that removing one Election Commissioner would not address the larger issue and described focusing on that action as a diversion. That distinction matters: opposition to SIR is not the same as endorsing a particular action against an individual commissioner, and it complicates a blanket claim that TVK has been silent on SIR.
What else did Stalin allege at the rally?
The New Indian Express reported a separate campaign jab: Stalin alleged that Vijay had effectively admitted TVK was a BJP branch. The claim referred to a viral clip in which Vijay appeared to say “TVK” while discussing a party’s earlier relationship with the BJP. The report’s qualification is important: an apparent slip in a clip is not an established admission.

What is the wider political response to SIR?
The Week reported that the INDIA bloc announced “Save Democracy” marches across districts and five major rallies to protest alleged irregularities in SIR. It also reported the Election Commission’s position that decisions on SIR were taken with the concurrence of its members. These accounts describe the political dispute and the Commission’s response; they do not amount to an independent finding on the allegations.
