Wombats are not usually dangerous when people keep their distance, but they are strong wild animals that can bite or scratch if frightened, injured or defending territory. Do not touch, feed, chase or corner one; keep dogs away; never enter a burrow; and call a trained wildlife rescue service for an injured or orphaned animal. If a wombat bites or scratches you, wash the wound promptly and seek medical advice.

How dangerous are wombats in an ordinary encounter?

Most people see wombats from a distance, often around dawn or dusk, while the animals spend much of the day in warrens. A wombat that is moving normally and has a clear route away will generally try to retreat rather than approach a person. The Australian Museum characterizes attacks as rare, but “rare” is not the same as impossible: Tasmania’s wildlife authority warns that bites and scratches can be severe.

The practical distinction is between an observation and a close-contact encounter. Watching from a safe distance gives the animal no reason to defend itself. Touching, blocking its path, pursuing it into a burrow or allowing a dog to harass it can force a defensive response. Wombats found injured, trapped, orphaned or unusually exposed deserve more caution, not less, because fear and pain increase the risk of a bite or scratch.

South Australia’s environment department describes the state’s two wombat species as averaging about one metre in length and weighing 20–32 kilograms. Those figures are a species overview, not a prediction that every wombat will attack. They do explain why an apparently calm animal should not be treated like a tame pet.

When a wombat may bite or scratch

Fear, injury and territorial defense

Tasmania’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment states: “Wombats are wild animals and although they look cute and cuddly, they can bite and scratch severely, especially when injured, afraid or defending their territory.” A wombat that is cornered, grabbed, prevented from reaching cover or approached at close range may use its teeth or claws to create an escape route.

Do not interpret stillness as an invitation to approach. An animal may be assessing a threat, protecting a burrow or conserving energy because it is hurt. Give it a route away and step back rather than waiting for a closer look.

Why a burrow entrance is especially risky

Never enter a wombat burrow or pursue an animal underground. Tasmania warns that a wombat can brace its bony rump against the roof or entrance. A person reaching into a confined opening has little room to withdraw, and the animal may be able to use the narrow space to defend itself. Burrows can also be extensive, unstable or hidden under vegetation.

What to do when you see a wombat

  1. Stop at a distance. Keep far enough away that the wombat can continue moving, turn around or reach its burrow without passing close to you.
  2. Stay quiet and avoid blocking its route. Do not surround it, shine lights directly at it or stand between it and cover.
  3. Keep hands off. Do not touch, pick up or feed a wild wombat, even if it appears calm or accustomed to people.
  4. Control pets immediately. Put a dog on a lead, call it away and prevent chasing, barking, sniffing at the animal or waiting outside its burrow.
  5. Leave the area if the wombat shows distress. Back away slowly and allow it to disappear. Do not follow for a photograph.

South Australian guidance says most people encounter wombats from a distance. That is the safest pattern to preserve. Binoculars can help with observation or distance assessment, but they are optional; no special equipment is required for a normal sighting.

Can wombats hurt dogs or other pets?

Official sources reviewed for this guidance do not provide a pet-injury rate or a wombat-versus-dog incident comparison. They do establish that wombats are powerful and can inflict severe bites or scratches on people. Keeping pets away is therefore a prudent safety measure based on the animal’s strength and documented defensive behavior, not a claim that wombats routinely attack dogs.

Situation Risk interpretation Safer response
Dog sees a wombat at a distance Low immediate exposure if the dog remains under control Use a lead or reliable recall and pass without approaching
Dog chases, corners or mouths the wombat High chance of a defensive bite or scratch to the dog; a person intervening can also be injured Call the dog away, create distance and do not grab the wombat
Wombat is in a yard or near a house Presence alone is not evidence of an attack; close approach raises risk Bring pets indoors or behind a secure barrier and let the wombat leave
Wombat is injured or trapped Fear and pain can make handling hazardous Keep people and pets back and contact a wildlife authority or trained rescue service

If a pet has been bitten or scratched, move it away without putting your hands near the wombat. Contact a veterinarian for the pet and report the wildlife incident to the relevant local authority. Do not attempt to capture the wombat yourself unless you are trained and equipped as part of an authorized rescue response.

If an injured or orphaned wombat needs help

An injured, orphaned or unusually exposed wombat should be referred to trained rescuers. Tasmania advises contacting a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation service and not attempting care yourself. NSW rescue guidance likewise warns that handling can injure people through bites or scratches and can involve disease transmission.

What an untrained observer should do

  • Keep people, children and pets away.
  • Observe from a distance to note the location and whether the animal can move.
  • Contact the wildlife rescue service or government wildlife authority for your state or territory.
  • Follow the responder’s instructions rather than improvising a capture, feeding plan or treatment.

NSW guidance says capture of adult wombats requires experienced personnel and appropriate equipment. Its rescue instructions mention robust clothing, covered shoes, personal protective equipment, hand hygiene and medical advice after a bite or scratch. Those are controls for trained rescue contexts, not a checklist for ordinary readers to handle an animal.

What to do after a wombat bite or scratch

  1. Get away from the animal safely. Do not stay close to take a photograph or try to restrain it.
  2. Clean the wound. NSW rescue guidance recommends warm water and soap or a disinfectant.
  3. Seek medical advice. Tell the clinician that you handled or were injured by wildlife so the exposure is assessed in context.
  4. Ask about tetanus protection. The Australian Museum advises a tetanus shot if needed; a medical professional should determine what is appropriate for your vaccination history and wound.
  5. Report the incident when appropriate. Contact the relevant wildlife authority, particularly if the animal is injured, trapped or acting abnormally.

Urgent medical care is appropriate for heavy bleeding, deep wounds, injuries to the face, hands or joints, loss of movement, severe pain or any sign of infection. Do not rely on a home remedy or wait for symptoms to worsen.

Wombats near a house, campsite or road

At homes and campsites

A wombat near a building is not automatically a threat. Keep doors closed, move children and pets inside, remove yourself from its path and allow it to leave. Do not crowd it with people, vehicles or lights. If it remains trapped, injured or repeatedly enters a dangerous area, ask the local wildlife authority for advice rather than using capture equipment or deterrents.

On roads

South Australia’s environment department notes that wombats are active at night and can be difficult for drivers to spot. Slow down in known wombat areas, especially in low light, and scan the road edges. Avoid swerving into oncoming traffic; follow safe-driving practice and local road rules.

Around burrows

Shallow or unstable burrows can collapse under people or vehicles. Stay alert around visible entrances, eroded ground and areas identified as wombat habitat. Do not stand on, drive over or probe a burrow.

Can you remove or destroy a wombat burrow?

Burrow and wombat protections differ by jurisdiction, so property decisions cannot be generalized across Australia. Check the applicable state or territory authority before filling, excavating, bulldozing, trapping or relocating anything.

New South Wales

NSW guidance says only inactive burrows may be bulldozed and warns that destroying an active burrow can bury wombats alive. It also explains that harming wombats may require a licence and states, in the relevant guidance, that trapping and relocation are not permitted. The official wording is categorical: “Only inactive burrows may be bulldozed.” Confirm current requirements with NSW Environment and Heritage before any work.

South Australia

Wombats are protected in South Australia. Burrows inside designated Wombat Burrow Protection Zones require a permit for destruction. A property owner should identify whether the site falls within such a zone and obtain advice before disturbing a burrow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Other states and territories

The NSW and South Australian rules should not be treated as national law. Contact the wildlife or environment authority where the burrow is located for the current permit, relocation and habitat requirements.

Healthy, normal behavior versus a distress situation

What you observe What it means for you Action
Wombat moving away at dawn or dusk Typical opportunity for a distant observation Remain still, keep pets back and let it pass
Wombat entering or leaving a burrow It has a refuge and may defend the entrance if pursued Do not block or enter the burrow
Wombat limping, bleeding, trapped or alone in an exposed place Possible injury or orphaning; handling risk is higher Keep clear and call trained wildlife rescuers
Wombat repeatedly approached by people or dogs Increasing stress and chance of defensive action Move everyone away and restore an escape route

Common mistakes that turn a sighting into an incident

  • Assuming a cute appearance means domestication. Wombats remain wild animals even where they are accustomed to seeing people.
  • Trying to help by grabbing the animal. Rescue agencies use trained personnel and suitable equipment because adult wombats can injure handlers.
  • Letting a dog “just sniff.” Close contact can corner the wombat and provoke a defensive response.
  • Following an animal underground. A burrow removes your space to retreat and gives the wombat a defensive advantage.
  • Destroying a burrow without checking the law. An active burrow may contain an animal, and permits or prohibitions vary by location.
  • Driving at normal speed in darkness. Wombats can be hard to see at night, and a collision can injure both the animal and vehicle occupants.

Bottom line for people and pets

A distant wombat sighting is usually a low-risk wildlife encounter. The risk changes when a person or pet closes the distance, blocks a burrow, chases the animal or handles one that is injured or afraid. Keep everyone back, leave the animal an escape route, use trained rescuers for welfare problems, and obtain local legal advice before disturbing habitat. That approach protects people, pets and wombats without treating every sighting as an emergency.
