They can be, but only after you verify every essential application, plug-in and device. Windows 11 on Arm64 runs native Arm apps directly and emulates many unmodified x86 and x64 user-mode apps. That makes ordinary productivity software broadly viable. The hard limit is drivers: emulation does not run x86 kernel drivers, so hardware and software that install system-level components need a driver built into Windows or a driver compiled for Arm64.
If one indispensable workflow depends on an old security client, virtualization tool, specialist peripheral, accessibility component, printer utility or anti-cheat driver, treat compatibility as unconfirmed until the vendor supports your exact version and model. A returnable purchase, a hands-on test and access to an x86 Windows computer are sensible safeguards.

What “Windows on Arm” changes
A Windows on Arm laptop uses an Arm64 processor rather than the x86-64 processors found in conventional Windows laptops. Windows 11 includes three relevant execution paths:
- Native Arm64 applications: compiled for the processor, normally giving the best performance and battery efficiency.
- Emulated x86 applications: many traditional 32-bit Windows programs can run without modification.
- Emulated x64 applications: many 64-bit programs can also run, with Windows 11 version 24H2 adding Microsoft’s Prism technology for improved emulated-app performance.
Microsoft says most Windows applications can be installed and run on an Arm-based PC. “Most” is not “every”: an application may open while a plug-in, installer, license component or device integration fails. The distinction between an application’s user-mode code and its kernel-mode components determines whether emulation is enough.

The driver boundary is the deciding compatibility test
Microsoft Learn states that emulation supports user-mode code but not drivers; kernel-mode components must be compiled for Arm64. Microsoft Support expresses the practical rule this way: “Peripherals and devices only work if the drivers they depend on are built into Windows 11, or if the hardware developer has released Arm64 drivers for the device.”
What usually works through emulation
A self-contained desktop application that performs its work in user mode is the best candidate. Office-style programs, browsers, many business tools and older utilities can be usable even when the publisher has not produced a native Arm build. Performance depends on the workload and the quality of the application, so a program that merely launches is not necessarily acceptable for long exports, large databases or real-time work.
What emulation cannot fix
Emulation cannot translate an x86 or x64 kernel driver into a working Arm64 driver. Compatibility can therefore fail when software installs:
- Antivirus, antimalware or endpoint-security drivers.
- Virtual-machine, hypervisor or low-level networking components.
- Printer, scanner, audio-interface or other hardware drivers.
- Accessibility components that hook deeply into Windows.
- PDF, capture, calibration or device-management drivers.
- Game anti-cheat drivers.
An installer can also be the problem. A program’s main executable might be emulatable while its setup package, licensing service or update agent expects an x86/x64 driver. Ask the publisher about the complete product, not just whether the main application window opens.
Peripheral support is model-specific
Windows 11 Arm PCs support most printers, including printers that use Mopria, according to Microsoft. Major manufacturers provide printer-support applications, but the exact model still needs either a driver included with Windows or an Arm64 driver from its manufacturer.
Printers and scanners
If a manufacturer’s installer will not run, Microsoft Surface Support suggests trying to add the printer through Windows Settings instead. That can establish basic printing without the vendor package, but it does not prove that every feature works. Verify scanning, duplexing, status monitoring, special finishing, calibration, secure-print release and ink or toner reporting separately if you depend on them. A device appearing in Settings is not evidence that its full utility suite is Arm-compatible.
Docks, audio and specialist equipment
Check the exact model of every dock, adapter, audio interface, label printer, card reader, measurement instrument and other specialist device. Confirm whether Windows includes its driver or whether the maker supplies an Arm64 version. USB connectivity alone does not guarantee that a proprietary control panel, firmware updater or advanced mode will function.
Accessibility hardware and software
Microsoft warns that not all assistive-technology applications work as expected on Windows 11 Arm and recommends contacting the publisher. Microsoft reports that NVDA has updated its application for Arm. That does not establish compatibility for another screen reader, switch-access tool, braille display, magnifier or speech system; check the exact product and version.
Legacy-app categories that deserve extra caution
Security and corporate-management software
Endpoint protection, VPN clients, device-management agents and authentication tools may install kernel or filter drivers. A browser-based alternative or a user-mode client can work while the company’s required security stack cannot. Obtain written confirmation from your IT department or the software publisher before making an Arm laptop your primary work machine.

Virtualization and development tools
Hypervisors and other tools that virtualize hardware commonly rely on kernel components. Confirm Arm64 support for the precise edition and version, then verify that the guest operating systems and development workloads you need are supported. An emulated desktop interface is not proof that the virtualization layer is supported.
Older plug-ins and add-ins
Audio, video, engineering, finance and productivity applications often load third-party plug-ins inside the host process. The host may run under emulation while an old plug-in fails to load, crashes or lacks a compatible licensing service. Inventory plug-ins and add-ins individually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesGames with anti-cheat systems
Some games run well under emulation, but anti-cheat systems can require a kernel driver. Check the game publisher’s current Arm64 and anti-cheat policy rather than relying on reports that the game itself launches.
Windows Fax and Scan
Microsoft says Windows Fax and Scan is unavailable on Windows 11 Arm-based PCs. If faxing or legacy scanning is mandatory, identify a supported replacement workflow before buying.
How to perform a pre-purchase compatibility audit
Use this process for a work, school or home setup where failure would be costly.
- Inventory non-negotiables. Write down every application you cannot replace, its exact version, plug-ins, add-ins, VPN or security client, license manager and hardware integration.
- Ask the publisher precise questions. Request Windows 11 Arm64 support for that version. If it is x86 or x64 only, ask whether it is supported under emulation and whether any installer, service or driver must run in kernel mode.
- Record device identifiers. List the exact printer, scanner, dock, audio device, accessibility equipment, security token and specialist-device models. “The same brand” is not sufficient; driver support can differ by model.
- Check the driver path. Look for a built-in Windows driver or an Arm64 driver from the hardware developer. Confirm the features you actually use, not merely basic detection.
- Use Microsoft’s compatibility catalog as a lead. Works on Windows on Arm contains compatibility information supplied by Microsoft. Microsoft reported more than 7,000 verified apps and games in the catalog on August 25, 2026. Treat that count and each listing as ecosystem context, not a guarantee for your particular plug-in, workflow or device.
- Test a real workflow. Open representative files, connect the real hardware, print or scan a complete job, use your security or VPN connection, export a typical project and run any required plug-ins. A successful launch test is too shallow.
- Keep a fallback. If one essential item remains uncertain, buy from a seller with a workable return period or retain access to an x86 Windows computer for that task.
Questions to ask vendors before ordering
Generic statements such as “Windows compatible” are not enough. Ask whether the software is supported specifically on Windows 11 Arm64, whether the stated support applies to your exact release, and whether every plug-in, service, updater and license component is included. For hardware, ask for the exact model number, supported Windows versions, an Arm64 driver link and a list of features that work without the vendor’s full utility.
Request a written answer when the device is important to your job. “It launches” should prompt a second question: does it print, scan, authenticate, export, update firmware and survive sleep and restart? If the vendor only supports a newer release, price the upgrade and confirm that your files and add-ins migrate before treating it as a solution.
What to test during the return period
Run the following checks before the return window closes:
- Install the application from the publisher’s current installer, not only from a copied executable.
- Apply updates and restart several times; update services can use different components from the main program.
- Open your largest or most complex normal files and complete an end-to-end job.
- Connect each peripheral directly and through the dock or hub you intend to use.
- Test advanced printer and scanner functions, not just a one-page print.
- Sign in to VPN, security and licensing services required for work.
- Measure whether emulated performance is acceptable under your real workload rather than assuming that a short launch is representative.
- Check sleep, wake, display output, audio routing and device reconnect behavior after Windows updates.
Common compatibility traps
Several assumptions create avoidable returns. A Microsoft Store listing or a successful download does not prove that a companion driver works. A USB-C port does not guarantee support for a dock’s Ethernet, display, audio or charging functions. A printer that produces a page may still lack scanning or secure-release features. Likewise, a game that reaches its menu may fail when its anti-cheat service loads.

- Laptop sitting too low on your desk: Raise it to eye level on a gas spring arm that adjusts from 9 to 18.75 inches and holds where you leave it. A hex key sets the tension, turning one way for heavier laptops and the other for lighter ones.
- Covered for as long as you own it: Mount-It! backs this laptop arm with a lifetime manufacturer warranty and US-based product specialists, available during standard business hours. If setup, tension, or fit raises a question, a product specialist can help.
- Fits laptops up to 17 inches and 13.2 lbs: Side holders open from 9.5 to 16.5 inches wide, and locking buckles, traction pads, and tabs keep the laptop from slipping. The 11.75 x 11 inch tray is ventilated so warm air escapes beneath. Check your laptop's width and weight first.
- Full motion for every working position: A 360 degree swivel, 90 degree tilt, and reach from 10.5 to 23.5 inches let you pull the screen close, push it back, or angle it toward a video call, then reposition it between sitting and standing.
- Screen up high, keyboard and mouse below: This laptop stand arm is a raised screen, not a typing surface, so pair it with an external keyboard and mouse. It clamps to the desk edge instead of a riser taking up space, and cable clips route cords along it.
Do not confuse Windows 11 guidance with older Windows 10 Arm information. The current buying question is Windows 11 on Arm64, and support statements can change with operating-system releases, vendor updates and device revisions. Recheck compatibility immediately before ordering, especially if the catalog entry or driver date is old.

Arm laptop versus conventional x86 Windows laptop
If both platforms meet your requirements, compare them on the factors below. Model-specific prices, ports, battery figures and performance require current product listings and independent testing; no universal figure applies to every laptop.
| Decision factor | Windows on Arm | Conventional x86 Windows |
|---|---|---|
| Native application support | Best when the publisher offers an Arm64 build; native apps generally have the strongest performance and battery efficiency. | Most traditional Windows software is built for this architecture. |
| Older user-mode applications | Many x86 and x64 applications run through Windows emulation, with behavior varying by workload. | Usually run natively when compiled for x86 or x64. |
| Kernel drivers | Must be built into Windows or supplied as Arm64; emulation does not help. | Legacy x86/x64 driver availability is generally broader, though old drivers can still be unsupported. |
| Peripheral risk | Check every model and advanced feature; basic detection may not include vendor utilities. | More legacy driver coverage, but manufacturer support still matters. |
| Fallback requirement | A second x86 computer may be necessary for one incompatible workflow. | Less likely for older Windows-specific software, but specialist hardware can still require a separate system. |
| Best buying approach | Choose after an app-and-driver audit and hands-on test. | Choose when compatibility certainty outweighs the Arm platform’s advantages. |
When an Arm laptop is a sensible choice
- Your essential applications are native Arm64 or confirmed to work under emulation.
- Your printers and other devices use built-in Windows drivers or confirmed Arm64 drivers.
- You value the performance and battery benefits Microsoft associates with native Arm applications.
- You can test the exact workflow and retain a return option.
- You are comfortable keeping another computer for an occasional incompatible task.
When an x86 laptop is the safer purchase
- Your income or studies depend on an old application whose publisher will not confirm Arm support.
- You require a kernel-level VPN, security agent, hypervisor or anti-cheat system without an Arm64 release.
- Your scanner, printer, dock or specialist instrument has no documented Arm64 driver.
- You depend on Windows Fax and Scan or an assistive-technology product with uncertain support.
- You cannot return the laptop or maintain access to another Windows computer.
What to do when something fails
The application will not install
Check the publisher’s Arm64 guidance and download the latest supported installer. Do not assume that a compatibility-mode setting can supply a missing driver or service. If the vendor requires an unsupported kernel component, use the return option or an x86 machine.
The application opens but a feature is missing
Identify whether the failing feature uses a plug-in, licensing service, filter or device driver. Ask the publisher for an Arm64 update or a documented workaround. Record the exact application version and error rather than reporting only that “the app works.”
The peripheral is detected but advanced functions fail
Try adding it through Windows Settings, install the manufacturer’s Arm64 package if available, and test the specific feature. If only basic printing or audio works, replace the device or keep an x86 system for that workflow.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Emulated performance is unacceptable
Look for a native Arm64 build, reduce unnecessary plug-ins and test the current Windows 11 release. If the workload remains too slow, an x86 laptop may be the more productive choice even though the application technically runs.
The practical verdict
Windows on Arm laptops are worth buying for legacy-app users only when compatibility is demonstrated at the workflow level. Native Arm software is the low-risk path; emulated user-mode software is often workable; anything that depends on a kernel driver remains a hard compatibility gate. Microsoft’s growing catalog—more than 7,000 verified apps and games reported in August 2026—shows meaningful ecosystem progress, but it cannot certify your exact version, peripheral or plug-in.
Make the purchase conditional: complete the inventory, obtain vendor confirmation, test the real devices and keep a return or fallback plan. If any essential driver-dependent component is still unknown, choose a conventional x86 Windows laptop or retain one alongside the Arm machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Windows 11 Arm run ordinary older Windows programs?
Many unmodified x86 and x64 user-mode applications run through Windows emulation. Native Arm64 versions generally offer the best performance and battery life, while demanding workloads should be tested rather than judged by whether the program launches.

Will emulation make an old printer or scanner work?
No. Emulation supports user-mode code, not kernel-mode drivers. The device needs a driver built into Windows 11 or an Arm64 driver from its manufacturer. Basic printing through Windows Settings does not prove that scanning, status tools or advanced features work.
Are VPNs, antivirus and corporate security tools safe to assume?
No. These products may install kernel, filter or networking drivers. Ask your IT team or the publisher to confirm Windows 11 Arm64 support for the exact product and version before relying on the laptop for work.
What about accessibility software and braille devices?
Microsoft warns that not all assistive-technology applications work as expected and recommends checking with the publisher. Microsoft reports that NVDA has an Arm update, but that does not establish support for every screen reader, braille display or switch-access product.
Can I use Windows Fax and Scan on an Arm laptop?
Microsoft says Windows Fax and Scan is unavailable on Windows 11 Arm-based PCs. Arrange a supported replacement workflow before buying if faxing or legacy scanning is essential.

No. Microsoft reported more than 7,000 verified apps and games in the catalog on August 25, 2026, but a listing cannot certify your exact version, plug-in, device feature or end-to-end workflow. Use it as a starting point and confirm critical items with the vendor.
Should I buy an Arm laptop if one important app is unconfirmed?
Only if you have a workable return option and continued access to an x86 Windows computer. If the unknown component is driver-dependent or central to your income, a conventional x86 laptop is the lower-risk purchase.
What is the fastest compatibility check before ordering?
List exact application versions, plug-ins and device models; ask vendors about Windows 11 Arm64 and required drivers; check Microsoft’s catalog; then test a representative workflow on a returnable system.
The Bottom Line
Buy Windows on Arm only after an app-and-driver audit. Native Arm software is the safest path, and many x86/x64 user-mode apps work under emulation. But no emulator can supply a missing kernel driver. If an essential security tool, peripheral, accessibility product, specialist device or legacy workflow remains unconfirmed, choose x86 or keep an x86 fallback.
