Are Windows 11 Widgets Private? What Data They Collect and How to Manage It

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Windows 11 Widgets are not governed by one privacy switch. Three different data layers can be involved: Windows diagnostic data generated by the Widgets board, Microsoft-account data used to personalize the board, and information collected by the separate app or online service that powers each widget. You can reduce or inspect each layer, but changing one setting does not automatically stop the others.

What “private” means for Windows 11 Widgets

Microsoft describes Widgets as a personalized board rather than a self-contained app. The board runs within Windows, while individual cards are supplied by different apps or online services. That architecture matters: the data collected when you open or use the board is not necessarily the same data collected by a news, weather, sports, finance or entertainment provider.

Microsoft’s own Widgets guidance identifies three relevant scopes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Windows diagnostics: Windows diagnostic data generated from the Widgets board follows the diagnostic-data level selected in Windows Settings.
  • Microsoft-account personalization: Data associated with your Microsoft account can be used to tailor the board and can be reviewed through Microsoft’s privacy dashboard.
  • Widget-provider collection: Each widget is powered by an app or service that may collect information under its own privacy policy and controls.

Some powering services may also estimate your location. Microsoft says they can use the Windows Location service when it is enabled, or fall back to the IP address of your internet connection. That does not establish that every widget uses precise GPS, nor does turning off Windows Location guarantee that no service can infer an approximate location.

What data can be collected?

Windows diagnostic data from the Widgets board

Microsoft states that “Windows diagnostic data is collected from the Widgets board and is determined by the diagnostic data settings you choose in the Windows Settings app.” In practice, the amount and categories depend on whether your PC is configured for required diagnostic data only or allows optional diagnostic data.

Diagnostic level What Microsoft describes What it means for Widgets privacy
Required diagnostic data Data about the device, its settings and capabilities, and whether Windows is operating normally. Windows continues to receive the diagnostic information Microsoft classifies as necessary for reliability, security and basic operation. This is not a Widgets-specific opt-out.
Optional diagnostic data Additional device-health information and more detailed use of Windows and its apps or features. Allowing it permits a broader diagnostic stream. The documentation does not provide a Widgets-only volume or a provider-by-provider event list.

Required data is not the same as “no data.” It can still describe your device configuration, capabilities and whether Windows is operating correctly. Optional data adds further device-health and usage detail across Windows and its apps or features; it is not a separate feed limited to the Widgets board.

Microsoft’s diagnostic documentation gives an estimate of approximately 6 MB of Windows diagnostic data per day for an average device. That is a Windows-wide estimate, not a measurement of Widgets traffic, and it should not be read as a promise about what Microsoft stores for your particular PC.

The optional-diagnostic reference covers Windows 11 releases including 22H2, 23H2, 24H2 and 25H2. Categories, wording and available switches can change as Windows is updated, so use the labels displayed on your installation rather than assuming an older screenshot matches your PC.

Microsoft-account data used for personalization

The board can use information associated with your Microsoft account to personalize what it shows. Microsoft directs users to the Microsoft privacy dashboard to access and manage account-associated data used to personalize Widgets.

This dashboard is a separate control surface from Windows diagnostic settings. Reviewing or changing account personalization there does not, by itself, delete Windows diagnostic data or change what an independent widget provider collects. If several people use the same computer, check which Microsoft account is signed in: personalization can follow the account rather than the physical device.

Data collected by the service behind a widget

Microsoft says that “since each widget or dashboard is powered by a different app or service, individual widgets or dashboards might also collect data.” The exact fields therefore vary. A provider may have its own account, advertising, usage, location or content-preference settings, and Microsoft does not publish one universal inventory covering every widget.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A provider may also apply its own sign-in, subscription or regional rules. Two cards that look similar can therefore have different data practices. Read the provider’s policy and controls for the specific card instead of assuming that Microsoft’s Windows settings govern it completely.

To identify the responsible provider, open the widget’s More options menu and look for Powered by. Follow that app or service’s privacy controls, or remove the widget if you do not want it on the board. Removing a card stops that card from appearing; it should not be described as erasing historical data already held by the provider.

Location estimation and IP addresses

Location is another example of why a single yes-or-no privacy answer is misleading. Microsoft says a powering service may estimate location from Windows Location when that service is enabled. If Windows Location is not available, the service may use the IP address of your internet connection as a fallback.

  • Windows Location can provide a device location signal to permitted apps and services.
  • An IP address can often indicate an approximate network location even when the Windows Location switch is off.
  • The documentation does not say that every widget requests location, uses precise coordinates or ignores provider-specific settings.

If avoiding location-based personalization is important, disable Windows Location where appropriate, review the provider’s own privacy settings and remove widgets that do not need to be present. Treat this as risk reduction, not proof that all approximate location inference has stopped. A work or school network can also expose a location associated with its public IP, independently of the Windows Location switch.

How to reduce Windows diagnostic collection

Windows 11 places the main diagnostic controls in one settings page. The available choices can be restricted on a work-managed computer, and wording can differ between Windows updates.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security.
  3. Open Diagnostics & feedback.
  4. Under Diagnostic data, choose the level available on your PC. Selecting the required-only option limits optional diagnostic data; it does not turn off all Windows diagnostics.
  5. Review the personalization control on the same page. Older or not-yet-updated installations may call it Tailored experiences; newer Windows versions use Personalized offers.

Do not assume that the two personalization labels are interchangeable in every build. They reflect an evolving Windows interface, so use the label actually displayed on your installation. On an organization-managed device, a policy may make the control unavailable or force a particular setting; contact the administrator if the option is locked.

Changing the diagnostic level affects future collection under that setting. It should not be presented as a command to erase records already received. For deletion or access questions involving account information, use the relevant Microsoft privacy controls; provider-held records require the provider’s process.

How to manage Microsoft-account personalization

Use Microsoft’s privacy dashboard when your concern is information associated with your account rather than Windows telemetry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to the Microsoft privacy dashboard with the account used on the Windows 11 device.
  2. Review the account activity and personalization categories related to content shown in Microsoft experiences.
  3. Change or clear the controls offered for that data, following the dashboard’s on-screen explanations.

The dashboard is not a master deletion button for Widgets. It does not replace the Windows diagnostic setting, and it cannot administer a third-party service that powers a particular card. If a card opens a separate website or app, check whether that service uses a different account from your Windows sign-in.

How to check who powers a widget and remove it

Identify the provider

  1. Open the Widgets board in Windows 11.
  2. Find the card you want to investigate.
  3. Open its More options menu.
  4. Read the Powered by entry.

That name tells you which app or service’s privacy policy and settings apply to the card. Look there for controls covering personalization, account use, advertising, location and activity history. The provider’s settings are authoritative for provider-side collection.

For a careful review, record the provider name, whether you are signed in, which permissions are enabled and whether the card links to an external service. This separates a Windows setting you can change centrally from a provider choice that must be changed in another app or website.

Remove an unwanted widget

  1. Open the widget’s More options menu.
  2. Select the command to remove the widget from the board.
  3. Repeat for each card you do not want displayed.

Removal is a board-management action. It limits the card’s ongoing presence in your Widgets experience, but Microsoft’s documentation does not promise that it deletes information previously processed by Windows, Microsoft or the powering service. If the provider has a separate account, use its privacy or account-deletion tools as well.

How to inspect Windows diagnostic events

Diagnostic Data Viewer lets you inspect Windows diagnostic events, open event details and export the information. It is useful for examining the Windows diagnostic layer, but it is not a complete audit of Microsoft-account personalization or third-party provider collection.

  1. Go to Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Diagnostics & feedback.
  2. Enable the option to view diagnostic data, then open Diagnostic Data Viewer.
  3. Search or browse the available events and open individual records for their details.
  4. Use the export function if you need to keep a copy for troubleshooting or review.
  5. When finished, turn off diagnostic-data viewing if you do not need the local history to remain enabled.

Microsoft’s documentation says enabling viewing can use up to 1 GB of disk space by default. The viewer’s default history is limited to up to 1 GB or 30 days, whichever comes first. Those are local viewer limits, not a retention promise for Microsoft’s servers. Events can also be queued, and the viewer should not be treated as proof that every event generated by Widgets or an external service will appear there.

Use the viewer to answer narrow questions such as whether Windows diagnostic events are being generated and what details a displayed event contains. Do not use an empty search result to conclude that a provider collected nothing: provider-side traffic and account personalization can occur outside the viewer’s scope.

What each privacy control does—and does not do

Control Primary scope What it can change What it does not cover
Windows diagnostic-data level Windows diagnostic data, including data generated from the Widgets board Whether optional diagnostic categories are permitted, subject to Windows edition and policy Microsoft-account personalization records or a widget provider’s own collection
Tailored experiences / Personalized offers Windows personalization and offer recommendations Whether the related Windows personalization experience is enabled on that build All diagnostics, provider-side processing or IP-based location estimation
Microsoft privacy dashboard Microsoft-account-associated activity and personalization data Reviewing and managing account data offered through the dashboard Windows diagnostic settings and independent widget services
Provider privacy settings The app or service listed under “Powered by” That provider’s account, content, advertising, location and activity choices, where offered Data already handled by Windows or Microsoft outside that provider
Remove widget The Widgets board display Whether the card remains on your board Deletion of historical records or collection by other layers
Diagnostic Data Viewer Inspection of Windows diagnostic events Viewing, examining and exporting available event records A universal inventory of account or third-party data

  • Set Windows diagnostic data to the required-only level if your edition and organization policy allow it.
  • Review Tailored experiences or Personalized offers in Diagnostics & feedback and disable the option if you do not want that personalization feature.
  • Check the Microsoft privacy dashboard for account-associated personalization data.
  • Inspect Powered by for every card you keep and adjust the provider’s privacy controls.
  • Remove cards whose provider, content or data practices you do not accept.
  • Review Windows Location and provider location settings separately, remembering that an IP address may still provide approximate location.
  • Use Diagnostic Data Viewer when you need to investigate Windows events, but do not interpret an empty or partial view as evidence that no provider-side collection exists.

After a major Windows update, revisit these checks. Microsoft can rename a control, add a policy restriction or change the layout while preserving the same general separation between diagnostics, account personalization and provider data.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

“I turned off Location, so no widget can know where I am.”

That conclusion is too broad. Microsoft documents an IP-address fallback for location estimation. Disable Windows Location if appropriate, then review each provider’s controls and avoid widgets that require location.

“The privacy dashboard controls all Widgets data.”

It controls the Microsoft-account data made available there. Windows diagnostics and provider-side data remain separate layers.

“Removing a widget deletes my data.”

Removing a card changes the board. It is not documented as a deletion request for historical Windows, Microsoft-account or provider records.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Diagnostic Data Viewer shows everything Windows and Widgets send.”

The viewer is limited to Windows diagnostic events and has bounded local history. It does not provide a full inventory of account personalization or an external provider’s servers.

“Optional diagnostic data is only Widgets data.”

Optional diagnostic categories cover Windows device health and app or feature use more broadly. The published estimate of approximately 6 MB per day applies to Windows diagnostic data overall, not specifically to Widgets.

“Required-only means zero telemetry.”

Required diagnostic data still supports Windows reliability, security and normal operation. The setting reduces optional categories; it is not a complete diagnostic-data shutdown.

Are Windows 11 Widgets private enough to use?

Whether Widgets are acceptable depends on your tolerance for layered data collection. They are not an anonymous, standalone panel: Windows can collect diagnostic data according to your settings, Microsoft can use account-associated data for personalization, and each provider may apply additional rules. At the same time, Windows exposes meaningful controls for reducing optional diagnostics, managing personalization, identifying providers and removing cards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most accurate answer is therefore conditional: Widgets can be managed for greater privacy, but no single Windows switch makes every widget and service private. Treat the board, your Microsoft account and each provider as separate privacy decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning off Windows diagnostic data disable Widgets?

No. Windows still supports required diagnostic data, and the setting is not a Widgets-only switch. It limits optional Windows diagnostics when that choice is available, while account personalization and provider collection remain separate.

Can Microsoft Widgets determine my exact location?

The documented behavior is more limited: a powering service may use Windows Location when enabled or fall back to your internet IP address for an estimated location. The documentation does not say that every widget uses precise GPS.

Where can I see which company runs a widget?

Open the card’s More options menu and read the Powered by entry. That provider’s privacy policy and settings govern its own collection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does removing a widget erase its data?

Removal takes the card off your board. It is not documented as deleting Windows diagnostic records, Microsoft-account data or information already held by the provider.

What is the difference between Tailored experiences and Personalized offers?

They are labels used by different Windows versions or updates for a related personalization control. Check the label shown under Diagnostics & feedback on your installation.

Is Diagnostic Data Viewer a complete privacy audit?

No. It displays and exports available Windows diagnostic events. It does not provide a universal inventory of Microsoft-account personalization or third-party service data.

Why is a diagnostic setting unavailable?

A work- or school-managed device can have diagnostic choices restricted by organizational policy. Windows version and edition can also affect the labels and options shown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How much space can Diagnostic Data Viewer use?

Microsoft documents up to 1 GB of local disk space by default for viewing data, with a default history of up to 1 GB or 30 days, whichever comes first. These are viewer limits, not server-retention promises.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Windows 11 Widgets are manageable, but they are not controlled by one privacy boundary. Set Windows diagnostics to the lowest available level, review Tailored experiences or Personalized offers, check Microsoft-account data in the privacy dashboard, and inspect the Powered by provider for every card you keep. Remember that disabling Windows Location, using Diagnostic Data Viewer or removing a widget addresses only part of the overall data flow.
