A short AI answer can settle a simple question; a site still matters when readers need deeper evidence, a first-hand perspective, a way to check a recommendation, or a place to take action. The available evidence points to change, not a universal collapse in website use.
What changes when AI answers a search?
AI-mediated discovery separates being seen from being visited. A search result, an AI summary citation, a referral click, a direct visit, and a branded search are different events. A page can inform an answer without earning a visit, so citation or visibility alone is not evidence of traffic.

In a Pew Research Center analysis of browsing by 900 U.S. adults during March 2025, people clicked a traditional result link in 8% of Google visits where an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% of visits without a summary. A link inside the AI summary itself was clicked in 1% of visits with a summary. These are observed behaviors in that panel and period, not a forecast for every query, search engine, country, or site. Pew Research Center’s findings measure clicks, not whether users found the summaries helpful or whether they later visited a site another way.

Are websites losing traffic?
There is no single answer that applies to every website. The evidence differs by source, sector, geography, and time period—and a decline that coincides with AI search does not by itself establish AI as its cause.

- Google’s account: On August 6, 2025, Google Search vice president Liz Reid said that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites was “relatively stable year-over-year,” and that average click quality had increased. This is Google’s characterization of its aggregate traffic, not an independent measurement or a guarantee for individual publishers. Google’s statement also argues that people are more likely to click content that helps them learn more, such as an in-depth review or a distinctive first-person analysis.
- News publishers: The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism reported Chartbeat data covering more than 2,500 sites: Google organic search traffic was down 33% globally and 38% in the United States from November 2024 to November 2025. This is a news-site dataset, not a measure of all websites. The Institute says how much of the decline is due to AI Overviews is unclear. The report’s overview describes the dataset and its limits.
Those findings are not necessarily contradictory: one concerns Google’s stated overall click volume, while the other tracks search traffic to a large set of news sites over a specified year. Neither establishes what happened to every company, publisher, or individual site.
Do people still visit websites after an AI recommendation?
Some do, according to a vendor-published U.S. survey. Propeller Insights surveyed 1,008 U.S. consumers for Kinsta; Kinsta reported that 44.7% said they always or most of the time visit a company website after an AI recommendation, and 25% said they do so occasionally. In the same survey, 61.1% associated website quality with product or service quality. These self-reported findings are not a universal measure of consumer behavior or proof that any particular design feature causes trust. Kinsta’s survey report states a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points at 95% confidence.

Trust in an AI answer is also conditional. In a Reuters Institute report across six countries in 2025, 50% of people who had encountered AI search answers said they trusted them. Thirty-three percent said they always or often clicked through, while 28% said they rarely or never did. These are self-reports, and the report cautions that stated behavior may differ from tracked clicks; people may also seek verification more readily on high-stakes topics. The report concerns its six-country sample, not all internet users.

When is a website still useful?
The value of a visit depends on what the reader needs after receiving an initial answer. A concise response may be enough for a low-stakes fact. More demanding decisions often require context, evidence, or an action that a search summary cannot supply.
Rank #3
- For a quick answer: A summary may be sufficient if the question is simple and the answer does not need further checking.
- For research or verification: The original source, supporting evidence, author, date, and relevant limitations let a reader evaluate a claim in context.
- For judgment: An in-depth review, original reporting, or a first-hand account can offer detail and perspective that a compressed answer may omit.
- For a decision or transaction: Readers may need product specifications, policies, contact information, account tools, or a way to complete the next step.
A site’s continuing role is not simply to attract a search click. It can be the place where a reader checks what an answer rests on, understands what applies to their situation, or completes a task.

AI-authorship signals do not establish who wrote a particular page or whether its claims are true. Pew Research Center analyzed 490,000 English-language webpage texts sampled from Common Crawl using Open Pangram, a tool that detects linguistic patterns. It found significant signs of AI authorship in 10% of sampled pages in July 2026 and in more than one-third of sampled pages published after ChatGPT’s release. Those figures describe the study’s sampled pages and detection method; they are not verified authorship records or a trust score. Pew’s analysis explains its approach.
Rank #4
For readers, better evidence of a page’s usefulness comes from what it makes inspectable: who is responsible for it, what sources support its claims, when relevant information was updated, and what uncertainty remains. Fluent writing—or a detector’s signal—cannot substitute for that evidence.
What should website owners do?
Treat the website as a useful destination after discovery, not merely as a target for a search result. This is practical editorial advice, not a proven formula for rankings or traffic.
- Publish material that adds something verifiable: original data, clear explanations, expert context, or a genuinely useful perspective.
- Identify authors and make important claims traceable to relevant sources.
- Show dates or update notes when freshness changes how a reader should interpret the information.
- Make the next step clear, whether that is checking a source, comparing options, contacting the organization, or completing a task.
- Evaluate performance with consistent periods and comparable segments. Look beyond sessions to engagement and meaningful outcomes, and avoid assigning a traffic change to AI without evidence of causation.
Measurement should distinguish discovery from outcomes: visibility or a citation is not a visit, a visit is not necessarily engagement, and engagement does not by itself prove a business result.
