Some editions have sold above retail, while others remain available on the secondary market at or below their original price. Buy one because you value the game and its physical extras; treat any future resale gain as uncertain.
What you are paying for
A collector’s edition typically bundles a physical game with items such as a figure, artbook, SteelBook case, soundtrack, or other title-specific extras. A deluxe edition may instead add digital content. That difference affects what you are buying: physical objects may be part of the appeal, but resale value depends on demand for the particular game and edition, as well as the copy’s condition and completeness.

What resale examples can—and can’t—tell you
Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe offers contrasting examples in its collector’s edition guide. It says the original Elden Ring Collector’s Edition sold out before launch and was difficult to find at retail price afterward. The guide also reports that the Little Nightmares II TV Edition launched at around $60 and traded for $80–$90 fairly quickly. These are publisher-reported examples, not typical returns or evidence of profit after selling costs.
The same guide notes that many limited editions remain available on the secondary market at or below retail for years. As Bandai Namco puts it, “Buying a collector’s edition video game as a financial investment is a gamble.” Limited supply alone does not guarantee lasting demand or a higher resale price.

There is no representative long-term return figure for collector’s editions in the sources available here. Closo’s broad video-games-and-consoles resale guide reports a $20 median sold price, a $10–$45 range for the 20th–80th percentiles, and a median 48 days to sell. Those figures cover video games and consoles together—not collector’s editions—and should not be used to price one. Closo describes its figures as based on a rolling 365-day sample of sold listings, updated nightly; its use of completed sales and median prices is a useful approach when researching an individual edition.
How to assess a specific edition
- Match the exact release. Confirm the edition name, platform, region, and included items. Similar names can refer to different versions or contents.
- Look for completed sales. Compare sold listings for the same edition and region, not sellers’ unsold asking prices. When available, consider how long comparable copies took to sell; a high price is less useful if buyers are scarce.
- Compare like-for-like condition. Check whether the original box, game, inserts, figure, and other advertised contents are present, and compare their condition with the copies that sold.
- Assess demand as well as supply. A sellout or limited run may constrain supply, but does not establish that buyers will continue to want the edition. Interest in the game and its community also matter.
- Estimate what you might actually keep. Start with plausible sale proceeds, then account for the purchase price, marketplace fees, shipping, applicable taxes, packing, storage, and the time spent waiting for a buyer. The sources cited here do not establish typical costs or net returns.
When the purchase makes sense
Consider the edition primarily as something you want to own, not as an asset expected to appreciate. Ask whether the physical extras and game are worth the premium to you even if the resale price falls, stays flat, or never attracts a buyer. Bandai Namco’s guidance is to focus on the physical items you value; if you are new to a series, playing the game first can help you decide whether its extras are worth paying for.
