PC Gamer’s October 8, 2026 feature by Lincoln Carpenter is openly playful about its own method, and the headline works as a joke built on real data. This article explains how that data was built, what it can and cannot support, and what would have to be true before anyone treats the trend as an economic signal.
How the count was built
The feature’s author manually reviewed 1,213 Steam games carrying the user-defined Vampires tag. For each one he recorded the release date and the first appearance in SteamDB’s archive, then judged whether the game was genuinely about vampires. Steam tags are chosen by developers and players, so the tag alone does not separate real vampire games from games that use the word for other reasons.

What counted as a vampire game
The working rule was that games centered on being or dealing with vampires counted, while games with only a few incidental vampires did not. The author says this judgment was subjective. He also says the tag picked up irrelevant uses, and that the lack of a discrete bullet-heaven genre on Steam led Vampire Survivors-style games to borrow the Vampires tag to be discoverable. The rule has a visible gap: Resident Evil Village, which has a prominent vampire character, was missed.

According to the feature, Steam does not expose its listing history in the same way SteamDB’s archive does, so the first SteamDB appearance serves as an approximation for when a project appeared on the store. It is not a verified development start date, and it is not the same thing as the release date. That distinction matters for the 2016 figures below, which use both measures.
#1 Best Overall
- Play as an immortal Successor - You are a Successor, an immortal warrior empowered by the gods Lu, Ashuran, and Harnia. When you die, you revive with your gear, runes, and unlocks intact and head back out from Cliffshire to push further into corrupted zones. Choose your Successor - You'll start as the Spellblade and unlock additional Successors as you progress. Each has its own skill tree, weapons, and playstyle
- Playable Classes - Spellblade-Element-focused hybrid with close and mid-range attacks built around fire, frost, and lightning. Berserker - Heavy melee bruiser that trades its own HP and positioning for huge damage and armor. Hunter - Mobile ranged fighter using thrown weapons, poison, and beast abilities to apply damage over time and control space.
- 2D Roguelite Hack-and-Slash Combat - Combat revolves around precise dodges, reading telegraphed attacks, and committing to aggressive combos. Areas are multi-layered 2D stages that reshuffle enemy layouts, hazards, and loot each run. When you fall, you lose gold and temporary bonuses, but your gear and runes stay with you and form the base of your next attempt.
- Loot, Runes, and Artifacts - Hunt Elites and Bosses to claim Rune Stones, then craft them into Legendary and Mythic equipment. Runes and class skill trees interact to define your build, while artifacts you pick up mid-run stack into powerful synergies.

The numbers, with their bases
The table lists each figure the feature reports, with the measure behind it. Values are as attributed to PC Gamer, 2026.
| Figure | Value | Basis and scope |
|---|---|---|
| Vampire games released on Steam, 2016 | 4 | Release date |
| Vampire-game listings first appearing in SteamDB’s archive, 2016 | 9 | First archive appearance, not release date |
| Vampire-game listings first appearing in SteamDB’s archive, 2025 | 99 | First archive appearance, not release date |
| Vampire games released on Steam so far in 2026 | 65 | Year to date as of the October 8, 2026 article; more were scheduled before year-end, so this is not a final annual total |
| Highest quarterly vampire-game launch count, 2020 | 6 | Single-quarter peak |
| Peak quarterly vampire-game launch count, 2026 | 24 | Single-quarter peak |
| Total Steam game launches, 2020 | 9,634 | Full-year total as reported in the feature |
| Total Steam game launches, 2025 | 21,263 | Full-year total as reported in the feature |
| Share of Steam games classed as “proper vampire games” | Less than 1 in 100 | The feature’s own classification; some recent quarterly shares were more than twice the level at the start of the decade |
The two 2016 figures are not interchangeable. Four games were released that year, while nine listings first appeared in the archive that year, because the two measures date games differently. Comparing them as if they counted the same thing would overstate or understate the trend depending on which one is used.
Why the denominator decides the question
Steam’s annual launch total rose from 9,634 in 2020 to 21,263 in 2025, a little more than double. A rising raw count of vampire games could therefore reflect nothing more than a bigger catalogue. The more informative measure is share: how many of all launches fall into the category.

- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered modernises the 2006 Game of the Year with all new stunning visuals and refined gameplay.
The feature’s custom Vampire Menace Rating works this way. It divides quarterly vampire-game appearances in the SteamDB archive by total Steam launches in the same quarter. The author presents it as a playful, imperfect measure rather than a validated economic statistic. Even on that measure, vampire games remain under 1 percent of releases, and the share swings from quarter to quarter, so a single high quarter says little about direction.
What a recession is, in the institution’s terms
The National Bureau of Economic Research, which dates US business-cycle peaks and troughs, describes its traditional definition in its Business Cycle Dating Committee procedure FAQ: “The NBER’s traditional definition of a recession is that it is a significant decline in economic activity that is spread across the economy and that lasts more than a few months.”
Three features of that definition matter here. Depth, diffusion across the economy, and duration each count to some degree. The committee weighs a range of broad indicators rather than one series. And it dates turning points retrospectively, after enough data have accumulated. A niche entertainment category, even one with a clear trend, cannot by itself show that a decline is spreading across the economy.

The economic charts the article pairs with the vampire data
The feature places the game counts beside household financial measures. As the article presents them:
- US median household income rose about 4.6 percent in real terms between 2020 and 2025 (US Census Bureau data, as reported by PC Gamer, 2026).
- CPI for all urban consumers rose roughly 27 to 29 percent from the start of 2020 to the article’s present, depending on whether food and energy are included (CPI data, as reported by PC Gamer, 2026).
- Credit-card delinquency is trending up, attributed to Federal Reserve Board of Governors data.
- The personal savings rate is trending down, attributed to Bureau of Economic Analysis data retrieved through FRED.
- The Producer Price Index for wholesale trade industries is rising over the same period.
These measures describe household financial strain and price pressure. The feature does not state a statistical test linking them to vampire-game counts, so they serve as mood context rather than corroboration.

- Relic Expedition Cycle – Throughout their journey in the kingdom of Norgan, the Arisen must unearth and appraise forgotten relics to unlock powerful new weapons and skills.
- New Dungeon Challenges – The 12 freshly uncovered Lost Rites dungeons house trials designed by the Pathfinder to sharpen the Arisen’s skills and recover rare equipment once held by past Arisen that now lay dormant.
- Deeper Character Customization – New tattoo and hair options have been added to the already robust character creation tool in Dragon’s Dogma 2 so Arisen and Pawns can have even deeper personalization.
- Now on Nintendo Switch 2 – Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen brings the classic fantasy world of Dragon’s Dogma 2 and the Dark Arisen Expansion to the Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time.
- Pre-order Bonuses – The Norgan Fashion Set - Northern Attire will be available as a pre-order bonus, which can be accessed via in-game storage at launch.
- A defined outcome, such as official NBER recession dates, against which the signal is tested.
- A lead-lag test showing that the vampire share moves before recessions begin, not during or after them.
- Out-of-sample testing on periods not used to choose the signal. The 2016 to 2026 window contains very few recession episodes to test against.
- A baseline comparison. The signal would need to beat simply tracking Steam’s overall release growth or any other arbitrary tag.
- A reproducible classification, with a published rule and dataset others can rerun, rather than one author’s judgment about which games count.
The feature does not report a lead-lag analysis, a comparison against official recession chronology, or a causal mechanism connecting game releases to employment or output. Its charts show trends as the author presents them.
A concrete example: V Rising
Steam describes V Rising as a vampire survival action RPG. Stunlock Studios is listed as developer and publisher, the release date is May 8, 2024, and the store page lists single-player and online play. It is an unambiguous entry under the feature’s rule, which makes it a useful reference point for what counts. The example illustrates the classification; it does not confirm any count in the article’s dataset.

The feature supports a narrow claim: vampire-themed releases on Steam were more numerous in 2025 and 2026 than in earlier years, and their share of quarterly launches rose at certain points, though still below 1 percent. It does not support a claim that those releases forecast a recession, and the author’s own caveats about subjectivity and tag noise are reason enough to read the numbers as entertainment journalism rather than economic evidence.
