No—USB is not a thing of the past. USB-IF continues to maintain and update the standard, and USB4 builds on earlier USB generations while supporting compatibility with USB 3.2, USB 2.0, and Thunderbolt 3 hosts and devices. That shows USB remains a developing physical connection standard; it does not prove how much people use it or that it is replacing cloud and wireless transfers.
Why USB is still relevant
USB remains useful when you need a direct physical connection or a portable local copy of your files. A flash drive or external drive can keep data available without relying on an internet connection, while a USB cable can connect compatible devices directly. Whether that is more convenient than another transfer method depends on the devices, file, and circumstances.

The standard is also still evolving. USB-IF’s document library lists a USB4 Specification v2.0 entry dated April 2, 2026, and a USB Type-C Cable and Connector Specification Release 2.5 entry dated April 8, 2026. USB names cover different data capabilities. USB-IF’s January 2024 performance guidelines identify five USB4 and USB 3.2 transfer-rate tiers: 80, 40, 20, 10, and 5 Gbps. Those figures describe specification or performance-label rates, not guaranteed file-copy speeds. The real result depends on the connected equipment and workload. USB 3.2 can use up to two 10 Gbps lanes to provide a 20 Gbps data transfer rate, according to USB-IF. USB4’s current overview states a maximum operation of 80 Gbps over certified 80 Gbps cables. USB-C is the connector, not a speed guarantee
USB Type-C describes a connector system; its appearance alone does not tell you what data performance a connection supports. USB4 is specified over USB Type-C, but the host, peripheral, and cable must all support the relevant capability. USB-IF says USB4 connections scale to the best mutual capability of the connected devices. Check the specifications for each part rather than choosing by connector shape alone. USB, cloud, or wireless: choose for the job
USB has a clear role when the priority is a local copy, offline access, or a direct connection. Cloud and wireless transfer may be preferable in other situations, but there is no sound basis here to rank them against USB for speed, convenience, or reliability across specific services and devices. Consider what your transfer requires:

- Portability: A flash drive or external SSD can carry files between compatible devices.
- Direct connection: A suitable USB cable may connect devices without using a cloud service.
- Shared access: If files need to be available across devices or to other people, compare the relevant cloud or wireless options for those devices and your connectivity.

What USB’s evolution says about its future
USB has moved beyond the idea of a single universal speed. USB-IF announced publication of the USB4 specification on September 3, 2019, describing it as a major update building on USB 3.2 and USB 2.0 and based on the Thunderbolt protocol specification contributed by Intel. This history supports a measured conclusion: USB remains a maintained standard with a range of physical data-transfer capabilities. It does not establish future market share or prove that USB will dominate, disappear, or replace cloud and wireless transfers.

Choosing a USB drive or cable
If you need local storage, a USB-C flash drive or external SSD may suit different storage needs; a data cable is useful when you need a direct connection. These are optional tools, not requirements for every transfer. Before buying or relying on a particular performance level, check the specifications for the host, storage device, and cable. A connector that fits is not proof that every component supports the same data rate.
