Yes—Amtrak provides accessible seating, mobility-device spaces, boarding assistance, station support, communication aids and accessible-travel requests. The practical answer depends on your exact itinerary. Platform height, train and car type, station staffing, baggage facilities, restroom layout and device dimensions can change from one stop to the next. Check every origin, transfer and destination station, then request the services you need when you book.
This guide focuses on Amtrak, the U.S. intercity passenger railroad. Commuter rail and local transit agencies operate under their own rules, equipment and reservation systems.

What accessibility means on an Amtrak trip
Accessibility is a chain of connections rather than a single feature. Your trip may involve a station entrance, ticket office, waiting room, platform, train door, interior aisle, seat or wheelchair space, restroom and baggage area. A station can have an accessible platform but no baggage storage; a train can accept your device while the station at a transfer point has a different boarding arrangement.
Recommended Free Tools
Amtrak says most major-city stations and many other stations are accessible. Its station pages identify features such as accessible platforms, restrooms, ticket offices, waiting rooms, parking and accessible paths. They also show that baggage carts, storage, Red Cap service and staff baggage handling vary by location. Treat every station as a separate accessibility check, including stations where you only change trains.

Mobility-device size and weight limits
Amtrak states that it accommodates most standard manual and battery-powered wheeled devices. Its all-route specification is a maximum 27.5 inches (70 cm) wide, 48 inches (122 cm) long when occupied, at least 2 inches (5 cm) of ground clearance and a maximum occupied weight of 600 pounds (273 kg). “Occupied” means the measurement and weight include you and anything carried on the device.
| Requirement | Published all-route specification | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum occupied width | 27.5 in (70 cm) | Determines whether the device can use the boarding route and designated space. |
| Maximum occupied length | 48 in (122 cm) | Includes the device with you seated on it. |
| Minimum ground clearance | 2 in (5 cm) | Helps the device clear boarding plates, ramps and thresholds. |
| Maximum occupied weight | 600 lb (273 kg) | Includes the passenger and device together. |
Route rules can differ. Amtrak lists a 30-inch maximum width on Acela, while the Adirondack lists 27.5 inches. Check the exact train rather than assuming that an all-route figure applies. Amtrak also notes that smaller devices are easier to maneuver through older cars, even when they meet the published limit.
How to measure before you book
- Measure the device at its widest point with armrests, controls, mirrors, baskets and other permanently attached equipment installed.
- Measure occupied length with your feet, footplates and any front extensions in their normal travel position.
- Record ground clearance at the lowest point that must pass over a plate or threshold.
- Weigh yourself and the device together, including batteries, bags and equipment that will remain attached.
- Give Amtrak these figures and the model of a scooter or power chair if a measurement is close to a route limit.
Boarding equipment and where you ride
The boarding method depends on the platform and train. High platforms generally use bridge plates. Low-level platforms may use a station-based mobile lift. Bi-level trains use ramps or lifts to reach the lower level. The station and crew determine which equipment is assigned; a personal ramp is not a substitute for Amtrak’s boarding equipment and should not be used unless Amtrak staff confirms that it is safe and permitted.

Passengers who request a lift or other boarding assistance are pre-boarded at their origin and given priority assistance at en-route stations. Tell the reservation agent whether you need a lift, bridge plate, ramp, escort or help transferring so the request is attached to the reservation.
Remaining in a wheelchair or transferring to a seat
A non-collapsible mobility device is used as your seat while the train is moving. If you use a collapsible wheelchair, you may remain in it or transfer to an accessible seat and have the chair stowed. Ask onboard staff for stowage help when you need it. Accessible spaces and seats are offered in Coach, Business Class and First Class, but the exact arrangement depends on the train and car.

When comparing trains, ask two separate questions: whether you can remain in your device for the journey, and whether an accessible transfer seat is available if you prefer to move. Do not assume that a seat shown as accessible has the same dimensions or transfer approach on every service.
Checking each station
Use the individual station page for your origin, every connection and your destination. Check the accessible path from the public entrance to the platform, platform height, restrooms, ticket office, waiting room, parking and the location where staff meet passengers requesting assistance. If the page does not answer a practical question, call 1-800-USA-RAIL.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteAt a staffed station, request a courtesy wheelchair or staff escort if you need one and arrive at least one hour before departure for assistance. That early arrival is especially important when staff must bring a lift, move you through a large terminal or coordinate pre-boarding.
Station services are not uniform
Baggage carts, paid storage, Red Cap assistance and staff handling are location-specific. For example, the Washington Union Station page lists baggage storage for a fee and Red Cap baggage assistance; another station may list neither. Confirm what is available at each stop instead of planning to use a service simply because it exists at your origin.
Amtrak’s December 2025 ADA Progress Report records 381 stations where Amtrak has some ADA responsibility. That is a program and responsibility count, not a statement that all 381 stations are fully compliant or offer identical equipment. The report describes a multi-year ADA Stations Program, so facilities can change as projects are completed.

Accessible reservations can be made on Amtrak.com or in the Amtrak app. The booking flow supports requests for service animals, deaf or hard-of-hearing passengers, blind or low-vision passengers, mobility-device spaces, transfer seats, accessible rooms and passengers who do not need special assistance but want to record accessibility information.
Booking procedure
- Choose the complete itinerary, including connection stations, before selecting accessibility options.
- Enter the mobility-device type and dimensions, or select a transfer seat if you will not remain in the device.
- Add boarding assistance, station escort, communication, sensory, meal, service-animal or room requirements that apply to the trip.
- Review the confirmation to ensure the request appears for the correct train, date and station. A general note on a customer profile is not a substitute for a request on the specific reservation.
- Contact Amtrak if the online flow does not show your device, route or service. The accessibility feedback form, telephone support, staffed stations, SMS and web chat are available request channels.
Amtrak asks passengers to make requests as early as possible and no later than 72 hours before departure. It says it responds to accessibility requests within 72 hours. On-the-spot requests are permitted when advance notice is not practical, but advance notice gives the railroad more time to assign equipment and staff.
Traveling as a wheelchair group
For groups traveling together in wheelchairs, Amtrak says that with at least 14 days’ notice, available space, equipment and resources, it can provide additional floor space at no charge. If it cannot accommodate the request, it will seek alternatives. Contact Amtrak before buying nonrefundable tickets if the group’s seating arrangement is essential.
Luggage, wheelchairs and medical equipment
Required medical devices—including wheelchairs, scooters, oxygen equipment, canes and walkers—are allowed under Amtrak’s stated size, weight and oxygen limits. When accompanied by a mobility-impaired fare, required medical devices are accepted free and do not count against the ordinary baggage allowance.

| Item or need | How Amtrak describes it | What you should confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Wheelchair or scooter | Accepted when it meets the applicable device specifications. | Occupied dimensions, total weight, route-specific width and whether it rides in a device space or is stowed. |
| Oxygen equipment | Allowed within Amtrak’s published oxygen rules. | Container type, quantity, dimensions and any battery or power requirements before departure. |
| Canes and walkers | Required medical devices are accepted with a mobility-impaired fare and do not count against ordinary baggage allowance. | Whether the item can be kept at your seat or must be stowed safely. |
| Other medical equipment | May qualify as required equipment rather than ordinary baggage. | Any item over a published limit; obtain approval before travel. |
Do not infer that an item is accepted simply because it is medical equipment. Confirm anything over the published limits with Amtrak, particularly oversized scooters, unusual batteries and oxygen equipment. Keep medication and essential equipment with you in accordance with Amtrak’s carriage terms, rather than placing time-critical items in checked baggage.
Onboard seating, restrooms and rooms
Amtrak’s accessible-travel information covers accessible seating, mobility-device services, meal options and special dietary requirements. Accessible rooms are among the reservation options, but room availability and the layout of a particular train should be confirmed before payment.
Ask whether the exact train has an accessible restroom on the cars you will use, whether the route includes a car change, and whether staff can help with a transfer or stowage. A station restroom and an onboard restroom are separate checks; an accessible facility at the terminal does not establish what is available during the ride.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Communication, sensory and language accommodations
Amtrak’s non-discrimination policy describes free aids including qualified sign-language interpreters and information in large print, audio or accessible electronic formats. It also describes foreign-language interpretation. Request the format or interpreter during booking and reconfirm it for the exact train, especially when a connection involves a different station or crew.

Service animals
Amtrak accommodates service animals trained to perform a task related to a disability under its accessible-travel rules. Placement and documentation requirements can apply. Add the service animal to the reservation, check the current requirements before departure and tell staff if you need a particular location or help navigating the station.
How to compare two accessible itineraries
The fastest or cheapest itinerary is not necessarily the easiest one to use. Compare the complete journey using the same questions for every option.
| Comparison question | Why it can change the decision |
|---|---|
| Is every station on the route accessible? | A fully accessible origin does not guarantee an accessible transfer or destination. |
| What is the platform height and boarding equipment? | High platforms, low platforms and bi-level trains use different plates, lifts and ramps. |
| What is the route-specific device width and maneuvering space? | Acela and Adirondack publish different width information, and older cars can be tighter. |
| Can you remain in the device or transfer? | Your preferred riding position may not be available on every car. |
| Are an accessible restroom, room and meal option available? | These are train-specific services, not universal station features. |
| What baggage help exists? | Storage, carts and Red Cap assistance vary by station and may have fees. |
| Can staff meet the request deadline? | General requests should be made no later than 72 hours ahead; group floor-space requests need 14 days. |
Travel-day checklist
- Save the station pages for your origin, connections and destination, and note platform, restroom, ticket-office, parking and baggage details.
- Carry your occupied width, length, clearance and total weight measurements.
- Recheck route-specific limits, especially for a scooter, older cars, bi-level equipment or a trip using Acela or Adirondack.
- Verify that boarding help, a mobility-device space or a transfer seat appears on the reservation.
- Arrive at least one hour early when you need station assistance.
- Keep medication, essential medical equipment and travel documents accessible.
- Confirm oxygen, oversized equipment and battery arrangements before leaving home.
- Reconfirm meal, dietary, sensory, communication and service-animal accommodations.
- Ask station staff where to wait for pre-boarding and which entrance or platform route to use.
- Reconfirm shortly before departure because equipment assignments, station amenities and baggage services can change.
What to do if a plan fails
Your device is close to the limit
Do not rely on an estimate. Re-measure it occupied, provide the exact figures and ask Amtrak to verify the route and car. A device that fits the all-route specification may still require a route-specific confirmation.

The station page does not list the help you need
Call 1-800-USA-RAIL or contact Amtrak through the accessibility request channels. State the station, train number, date, task and time you need help. Ask where staff will meet you and how early to arrive.
You could not give 72 hours’ notice
Make the request immediately and tell staff that advance notice was not practical. Amtrak permits on-the-spot requests, but equipment and personnel may be limited, so allow extra time and ask for a workable alternative if the first arrangement is unavailable.
Baggage assistance is unavailable
Station baggage services are not standardized. Ask in advance whether carts, storage, Red Cap or staff handling exists at that location, and plan to travel with only what you can safely manage if no service is listed.
A connection changes the accessibility plan
Ask the crew or station staff to confirm the next platform, lift or escort before leaving the train. Do not assume that assistance arranged at the origin automatically covers a different station or train.
