Tyrannosaurus rex is a tyrannosaur, but “tyrannosaur” and “T. rex” are not interchangeable names. T. rex is one species in a much broader group of related dinosaurs.
What is the difference between a tyrannosaur and T. rex?
The terms refer to different levels of classification. A tyrannosaur is a member of a broader group; Tyrannosaurus rex is one particular species within it. The Smithsonian describes T. rex as one species in the family Tyrannosauridae, and the Australian Museum places it in that family and the subfamily Tyrannosaurinae (Smithsonian; Australian Museum).

| Term | What it means | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Species | A specific kind of organism; its scientific name has two parts. | Tyrannosaurus rex |
| Genus | The group named by the first part of a species’ scientific name. | Tyrannosaurus |
| Family | A broader classification that includes related genera. | Tyrannosauridae |
In scientific names, the genus begins with a capital letter and the species epithet is lowercase; both are italicized. The Australian Museum explains how these names fit into higher classifications (Australian Museum’s dinosaur classification guide).

In everyday conversation, “tyrannosaur” is a useful broad label. When precision matters, “tyrannosaurid” specifically means a member of the family Tyrannosauridae; naming the genus or species is more precise still.

Is T. rex the only species in the genus Tyrannosaurus?
Not according to a 2024 paper in Scientific Reports, which named Tyrannosaurus mcraeensis from fossil material in New Mexico that had previously been referred to T. rex. The paper treats it as a distinct species in the same genus (Scientific Reports, 2024).
The paper’s authors say T. mcraeensis may have lived 5–7 million years before T. rex. That is an estimate of geological age, not a direct observation or proof of how the species are related. In contemporaneous reporting, the authors described it as a side branch rather than a direct ancestor of T. rex (Associated Press report).

Were other tyrannosaurs also T. rex?
Tarbosaurus
No. Tarbosaurus bataar is a related tyrannosaur classified by the Australian Museum in Tyrannosauridae and Tyrannosaurinae, but it is not T. rex. The museum notes that scientists have debated whether Tarbosaurus should be grouped in the genus Tyrannosaurus or kept separate. It cites differences in skull anatomy and nerve pathways in support of treating the genera separately (Australian Museum).

That is a debate about genus-level classification, not evidence that Tarbosaurus is the species Tyrannosaurus rex. A useful comparison looks at diagnostic anatomy, age and location, as well as the classification being proposed; resemblance or size alone does not settle the question.

Nanotyrannus
Older accounts sometimes described Nanotyrannus as a juvenile T. rex. Two studies published in 2025 reported evidence against that interpretation. A Science study concluded that the animal at the center of the debate was nearly mature and distinct from T. rex. A Nature study also distinguished Nanotyrannus from Tyrannosaurus, placed it outside Tyrannosauridae in its analysis, and recognized two species (Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, December 4, 2025; Nature study, 2025).
Those are the conclusions of the named studies, not a reason to treat every detail of tyrannosaur classification as settled. For example, the proposed reassignment of Tarbosaurus is a separate question from whether Nanotyrannus is a young T. rex.

Why do some sources describe the group differently?
Classification changes when new fossils are described or scientists reassess existing specimens. Some reference pages may therefore lag behind newer work: a Natural History Museum London page, for example, describes T. rex as the only member of the Tyrannosaurus group, while the 2024 description of T. mcraeensis names another species in that genus (Natural History Museum London; Scientific Reports, 2024). When a classification matters, check which study or date a source reflects and whether it is discussing a species, genus, or family.
How did scientists identify T. rex?
The name has a specific scientific history, but its discovery does not make it synonymous with tyrannosaurs as a whole. The American Museum of Natural History says Barnum Brown recovered the partial skeleton that became the T. rex holotype in Montana’s Hell Creek Formation in 1902, and Henry Fairfield Osborn named it in 1905 (American Museum of Natural History).
