Are Two Speakers Louder Than One? The Science of Adding Sound Sources

Usually, yes, but by less than most people expect. Two equally loud speakers typically produce about 3 dB more sound pressure level (SPL) than one, because their sound adds as energy. If both play the same signal in phase at your ear, pressure can double and the gain at that spot can reach 6 dB. If they arrive out of phase, they can partly cancel. The gain is not a fixed number across a room.

The short version in numbers

An acoustics chapter published by Springer Nature puts it this way: “If we add two sound sources, each with a sound pressure level of 60 dB_SPL, the result is either 63 dB_SPL if the sources are incoherent, since their powers add, or as much as 66 dB_SPL if the sources are coherent (having the same frequency) and in-phase, since their pressures would add.” The Acoustical Society of America (ASA) booklet says the same thing for the common case: “If the two sounds are equally loud, then the combined level is 3 dB higher.” The accessible Springer chapter page did not show a publication year, and the ASA booklet is dated 2000.

Situation at the listening point Result for two equal speakers
Independent (incoherent) sound, energy adds About +3 dB (60 dB + 60 dB ≈ 63 dB)
Same frequency, coherent, perfectly in phase Pressure doubles, up to +6 dB (≈ 66 dB)
Same frequency, coherent, out of phase Partial to substantial cancellation
Real stereo music in a furnished room Varies by position and frequency; no single figure applies

The 63 and 66 dB figures are idealised conditions at a single point. They are not a prediction for a stereo pair playing music across a room.

Why decibels don’t add like ordinary numbers

SPL is a logarithmic scale. In air it is 20 × log₁₀ of the measured RMS pressure divided by a reference pressure of 20 μPa. Acoustic intensity is proportional to pressure squared, so independent sources combine as energy. To add them, convert each level to energy, sum, and convert back:

Ltotal = 10 × log₁₀(10L1/10 + 10L2/10)

This gives some useful results:

  • Two equal sources: doubling the energy adds 10 × log₁₀(2) ≈ 3 dB.
  • Ten equal sources: ten times the energy adds 10 dB.
  • Unequal sources: a 60 dB source plus a 50 dB source gives about 60.4 dB. A much quieter second source barely changes the total.

The “6 dB” figure comes from the pressure scale instead. Doubling pressure is 20 × log₁₀(2) ≈ 6 dB, which is why coherent, in-phase sources can beat the 3 dB energy sum.

Why phase and position change the answer

Two speakers sit at different distances from your ear, and the room adds reflections. Each path has a different delay, so at any frequency the two arrivals may reinforce or cancel. The outcome depends on:

  • Grab, Go, Listen: A classic design refined with simple controls and effortless portability. Easy to use and take anywhere, and supports wireless stereo pairing.
  • Signal relationship: identical (correlated) content, as in mono, can interfere strongly. Different or decorrelated content in the two channels interferes less predictably.
  • Phase and delay: small path differences matter most at short wavelengths, so interference is frequency-dependent.
  • Listening position: distance to each speaker sets arrival times. A reading at one seat is not the level everywhere.
  • Room: reflections are delayed copies of the direct sound and add their own reinforcement and cancellation.

Stereo music is mostly not two identical signals. The channels’ correlation changes with frequency and time. “Two speakers always add 3 dB” and “always add 6 dB” are both oversimplifications. Treat +3 dB as the familiar equal-energy case and +6 dB as an in-phase upper case at a location.

SPL is not the same as loudness

SPL is an objective pressure measure. Loudness is what you perceive, and it depends on frequency, level and the individual listener. The ASA booklet gives a rule of thumb that an increase of 10 dB sounds approximately twice as loud. By that rule, a 3 dB gain is clearly audible but well short of “twice as loud”. It is a broad guide, not a law for all signals and listeners.

So the answer to “do two speakers double the volume?” is generally no. Two equal speakers add about 3 dB at a point, which most listeners hear as a modest increase.

How to compare one speaker and two fairly

A sound level meter or a calibrated phone app can show the difference, though neither is needed to understand the physics. To keep the comparison meaningful:

  1. Fix your listening position and don’t move between tests.
  2. Use the same content, such as the same track or test signal, and the same playback settings.
  3. Record the measurement conditions, including the weighting. A-weighted dB(A) and unweighted readings are not interchangeable.
  4. Measure with one speaker, then with both. Expect a difference near 3 dB with uncorrelated content, with larger or smaller swings at some frequencies and seats.
  5. If the result at a seat is odd, check that both speakers are wired with the same polarity, since out-of-phase wiring is a classic cause of thin, weak sound.

Moving the meter a short distance can change readings noticeably, which is a direct demonstration of position-dependent interference.

What the evidence does and doesn’t establish

The cited sources establish how sound levels add and why phase matters. They do not establish a universal gain for any particular pair of speakers, signal, room and seat. The ASA booklet also includes a classroom example of predicted speech intelligibility of about 90% at 0.5 seconds reverberation time and +10 dB signal-to-noise ratio. That is a classroom case, not a statement about speaker pairs.
