No official synopsis or corporate announcement identified for these films provides a connective event, shared backstory or statement that one is a sequel to another. Treating them as alternate adaptations avoids forcing contradictions into a single timeline.

The dates can look as though they describe one long-running film chronology, but the narrative premises do not line up that way. The table is a release-history guide, not a chronological map of one universe.
What happens in the 1994 movie?
A Guile-led military adventure
Universal’s listing presents Jean-Claude Van Damme as Colonel Guile and Raúl Juliá as General M. Bison. Its official description calls it an “epic” action adventure and centers on Bison’s hostage plot. Guile must act within 72 hours, giving the movie a military rescue structure rather than an individual martial-arts origin story.
Ryu and Ken appear as street-fighter allies recruited into Guile’s operation. Their function is therefore different from the wandering rivals or tournament fighters many viewers associate with the games. Chun-Li, played by Ming-Na Wen, is also part of this military-action ensemble rather than the sole subject of her own origin film.
Why its character arrangement matters
The 1994 adaptation rearranges the game cast around Guile and the conflict with Bison. The film’s premise can stand on its own: an international force confronts a dictator and attempts to rescue hostages. Nothing in that setup supplies a narrative handoff to the 2009 Chun-Li story.
Its 1hr 42min runtime and DVD/Blu-ray editions are details of the Universal home-video listing, not evidence of a larger canon. Home-video availability likewise does not connect the film to later adaptations.

The story is built around Chun-Li’s personal history and transformation into a fighter. Producer Patrick Aiello explained that the filmmakers deliberately chose her journey as an origin story and left Ken and Ryu for another day. That creative choice makes the film a fresh adaptation of Chun-Li rather than a continuation of Guile’s 1994 mission.
Why it is not a sequel to 1994
The two films assign different narrative jobs to the same broad set of characters. In 1994, Guile is the central military figure and Chun-Li is part of the ensemble. In 2009, Chun-Li carries the story and Bison’s relationship to her family drives the conflict. The films also come from different production arrangements: Universal distributed the earlier picture, while the 2009 project was made with Hyde Park and Capcom and released through 20th Century Fox.
Those differences are not merely changes in actor or costume. They are changes to the characters’ histories and the kind of story being told. There is no need to explain them as events occurring one after another because the films function as separate versions.
What is the 2026 Street Fighter movie?
A new tournament-centered adaptation
The official synopsis sets the film in 1993: “estranged Street Fighters Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) are thrown back into combat when the mysterious Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the next World Warrior Tournament: a brutal clash of fists, fate, and fury.”

Remake, reboot or something else?
For practical viewing purposes, treat the 2026 film as a new continuity or rebooted adaptation. Its official materials describe a Capcom-based film but do not call it a sequel to either the 1994 movie or The Legend of Chun-Li. They also do not publish a formal canon statement connecting it to those earlier stories.
“Remake” can suggest that a new film retells the same plot. The 2026 premise does not do that: it centers on a World Warrior Tournament with Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li, rather than repeating the 1994 hostage plot or the 2009 father-and-daughter revenge story. “Reboot” is therefore the more useful shorthand, provided it is understood as an editorial description rather than an officially announced label.

Why the three films cannot be placed on one confirmed timeline
Different protagonists
- The 1994 film is driven by Guile’s military response to Bison.
- The 2009 film is driven by Chun-Li’s origin and revenge.
- The 2026 film shares its central premise among Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li at a tournament.
A timeline can accommodate multiple protagonists, but here the change in focus accompanies different character histories and story structures.
Contradictory character functions
Recurring names do not retain one fixed biography. Ryu and Ken are recruited street-fighter allies in the 1994 operation; the 2026 synopsis presents them as estranged fighters being drawn back into combat. Chun-Li is an ensemble character in 1994 but the central origin figure in 2009. Bison is a dictator opposed by Guile in one film and the person responsible for Chun-Li’s family tragedy in another.
Separate production histories
The 1994 movie was distributed by Universal. The 2009 project involved Hyde Park, Capcom and 20th Century Fox. The 2026 project is identified in official materials as a Legendary/Paramount production. Separate rights, companies and creative teams do not automatically prove separate universes, but here they accompany the films’ independently written premises.
No published connective statement
The official listings and announcements describe each movie on its own. None of the cited materials says that the 2009 film follows the 1994 film, or that the 2026 film continues either earlier story. Until an official statement says otherwise, there is no confirmed shared continuity to map.
How the movies reinterpret the Capcom cast
Guile
In 1994, Guile is the military commander and emotional engine of the plot. The 2026 cast announcement includes Guile again, but the published synopsis does not say that this version is the same individual from the earlier film. The 1994 film uses her in a wider ensemble, while the 2026 synopsis presents her as the mysterious recruiter who brings Ryu and Ken into the tournament. These are three distinct dramatic functions.
Ryu and Ken
The 1994 story places them inside Guile’s operation as allies. The 2009 filmmakers chose not to make them part of Chun-Li’s origin narrative. The 2026 film puts their relationship at the center by describing them as estranged before the tournament pulls them back into combat.

M. Bison
Bison remains the recurring antagonist figure, but his role changes. Raúl Juliá’s 1994 Bison is the dictator behind the hostage crisis; Neal McDonough’s 2009 Bison is tied directly to Chun-Li’s family tragedy; David Dastmalchian is listed as Bison in the 2026 production, whose synopsis emphasizes the tournament rather than repeating either earlier conflict.
What order should you watch the Street Fighter movies?
For franchise history: release order
- 1994 — Street Fighter: Start with the Guile-led military adaptation.
- 2009 — Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li: Follow with the separate Chun-Li origin interpretation.
- 2026 — Street Fighter: Watch the new Ryu, Ken and Chun-Li tournament story when it is available in your region.
This sequence shows how different filmmakers repositioned the same game characters across three production eras. It does not represent in-universe chronology.
For convenience: any order works
There is no required prerequisite. Watching the 2009 film first will not spoil a continuation of the 1994 plot because it is not a sequel. Likewise, the 2026 film’s 1993 setting does not require you to know either earlier movie. Choose based on which character or premise interests you, then use release order if you want to compare adaptations afterward.

No. A date inside a film’s fictional world is not the same as a placement in the production franchise. The 2026 synopsis says the story is set in 1993, but it does not say that this is an earlier chapter before the 1994 movie. The 1994 movie has its own plot and character histories, and no official announcement links the two dates into one chronology.
Think of 1993 as the setting for the 2026 adaptation, not as proof that its events lead directly into the 1994 adaptation.
How to discuss game canon versus movie continuity
The Capcom games provide the shared foundation: character names, visual identities, fighting styles and concepts such as the World Warrior Tournament. Movie adaptations can borrow those elements while changing chronology, motivations and relationships.

Why do the same villains and heroes keep returning?
