Its noise-canceling and connectivity features remain compelling on paper, but Sony’s battery numbers are maximum estimates, comfort is personal, and the XM5 is no longer Sony’s current flagship. Compare current prices in your market rather than relying on an old or region-specific deal.
Who should consider the WH-1000XM5?
Consider the XM5 if you want premium wireless headphones with active noise cancellation, multipoint pairing, and support for Sony’s LDAC codec—and you can buy them at a price that makes sense against the newer WH-1000XM6. What Hi-Fi? describes the XM5 as no longer the current Sony flagship and frames it as a value option when discounted, but its cited deal is dated and UK-specific. Check current local pricing before deciding.

- A stronger case for buying: The XM5 costs noticeably less than the XM6, its fit works for you, and its connection features meet your needs.
- A weaker case: The price gap is small, you need proven all-day comfort, or you are choosing based on a promised battery duration that your settings may not deliver.
What do the noise-canceling and connectivity features offer?
Noise cancellation
Sony says two processors—the Integrated Processor V1 and HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN1—work with eight microphones. Its product information describes an Auto NC Optimizer that adjusts noise cancellation based on the environment, and Sony’s launch announcement says the system especially reduces mid-high frequency noise. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not a current, independent head-to-head measurement against the XM6 or competing headphones. Sony’s May 13, 2022 announcement and US product page detail the design.

Sony lists Bluetooth 5.2 and SBC, AAC, and LDAC audio formats. The product information also lists multipoint for connecting two devices. Codec support on the headphones does not mean every phone or computer can transmit every codec; what is available depends on both devices and their settings. How long does the battery last?
Sony USA lists maximum continuous music playback of up to 30 hours with noise canceling (NC) on and up to 40 hours with NC off. These are manufacturer estimates, not guaranteed everyday runtimes or independent test results. Sony separately lists up to 24 hours of communication time with NC on and up to 32 hours with it off. Sony’s US specifications provide these figures.
The Help Guide gives codec-specific maximum music playback estimates. Its figures vary by codec, and Sony says actual results depend on conditions and settings. Sony’s WH-1000XM5 Help Guide lists:

Quick charging
Sony’s guide says three minutes of charging can provide about one hour of playback. It lists about three hours of playback from a three-minute charge only when using a commercially available USB-PD-compatible AC adapter rated at 9 V/2.3 A or more. These are conditional manufacturer claims, not a guarantee for every charger or use pattern.

Are the WH-1000XM5 comfortable?
Sony describes a redesigned lightweight headband and soft-fit synthetic leather cushioning, and its launch materials present the headphones as designed for all-day listening. These are design features and intentions, not proof that the fit will suit everyone. Head shape, ear size, glasses, heat, and how long you wear over-ear headphones can all affect comfort. Sony’s launch announcement describes the design; no universal comfort result follows from it.
If possible, try the XM5 on before buying or check the seller’s return policy. Pay attention to pressure around the head and ears during a session long enough to reflect your normal use.

How should you compare the XM5 with the WH-1000XM6?
The XM6 is the newer Sony flagship, but the available sources do not establish a complete controlled comparison of the two models across noise cancellation, comfort, battery life, and connectivity. Avoid assuming that the newer model is automatically the better value—or that a discount makes the XM5 the better choice. Compare the current price and the features that matter in your own use.

- Confirm that your phone or computer supports your preferred codec and review your likely battery settings.
- Try the fit if possible, or choose a seller with a return policy that lets you assess comfort.
- Use independent, comparable testing—not manufacturer descriptions alone—if measured noise-canceling performance is central to your decision.
