The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 5 (MTW5) is one of the strongest flagship earbuds you can buy in 2026, but it is not the best choice for everyone. It suits listeners who put detailed, natural sound first, want deep sound customization, and value earbuds whose batteries can be replaced. Its noise cancellation trails several rivals in the reviews cited here, and fit varies from person to person more than a spec sheet suggests.
Expert Reviews concludes: “If you’re in the market for feature-packed flagship earbuds with excellent, natural sound quality, I’d highly recommend buying the Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless 5.” That is one reviewer’s judgment. RTINGS, Tom’s Guide and What Hi-Fi? use different test methods and reach different conclusions on noise cancellation, fit and battery life, so the sections below report each outlet’s findings separately instead of merging them into a single score.

Sound quality
Sennheiser specifies 7 mm TrueResponse dynamic drivers and high-resolution Bluetooth transmission up to 24-bit/96 kHz. These are manufacturer specifications. Whether you hear a difference depends on your phone, the codec it actually uses and the track you play, and Sennheiser’s product support page does not promise an audible gain on every source device.

Expert Reviews praises a detailed, natural presentation and found that the default Neutral profile sounded better to it than the result of the MTW5’s own personalization routine. RTINGS describes generally accurate reproduction with a warm profile, and notes that the ear tips you choose and the seal you achieve affect how consistent the sound is.
#1 Best Overall
- Signature Sennheiser Sound, Refined: Experience brilliant, emotionally rich audio with a high fidelity audiophile-grade 7mm TrueResponse driver, meticulously tuned to deliver exceptional clarity, detail, and natural balance at any volume.
- Audiophile Grade Wireless Audio: Advanced Bluetooth codecs including aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, and AAC preserve every detail, so music, movies, and games sound immersive, dynamic, and true to the source.
- Exceptional Battery Life: Enjoy up to 40 hours of playtime with on-the-go charging from the case. A replaceable battery extends product lifespan, helping reduce electronic waste while delivering years of premium sound.
- Built For Life: The secure-fitting ergonomic design assures superb wearing comfort and uncompromised audio enjoyment in any environment. Dust- and splash-resistant protection (IP54 rating) lets your audio accompany all your adventures.
- Clearer Calls, Smarter Microphones: Digital beamforming microphones, plus a bone conduction mic, and AI voice isolation keep your voice clear and natural on calls, even in busy environments, at home or on the move.
Customization is the MTW5’s most distinctive feature beyond the drivers. Sennheiser lists guided sound personalization and an 8-band EQ, so you can start from the default profile and adjust, or let the guided routine shape the sound. Because Expert Reviews preferred the default, it is worth listening to the Neutral profile before you spend time on personalization.
Noise cancellation
Expert Reviews reports a substantial improvement over the MTW4 but places the MTW5 behind Bose, Apple and Sony. RTINGS similarly finds stronger active noise cancellation (ANC) from the Sony WF-1000XM6 and the Apple AirPods Pro 3.

If ANC is your main reason for buying earbuds, audition those rivals first and treat the MTW5 as a strong alternative rather than the benchmark. The cited reviews do not name a specific Bose model in this comparison, so test the Bose model you are considering rather than assuming a result.

Sennheiser’s product support page gives up to 12 hours per earbud and up to 40 hours with the charging case. The page does not state whether those figures assume ANC is on or off. What Hi-Fi? reads them as ANC-off figures and reports much shorter endurance with ANC enabled.

What Hi-Fi? compares the MTW5’s ANC-on endurance with the Technics EAH-AZ100 and the Sony WF-1000XM6. If you commute or fly with noise cancellation running, plan around the ANC-on row. The headline figures apply only to the conditions Sennheiser and What Hi-Fi? describe, and your results will vary with volume, listening habits and battery age.
Fit, seal and durability
Sennheiser specifies IP54 protection. IP54 is a dust and splash rating, and nothing in the cited material supports using it as a claim about swimming or immersion.
Rank #4
- Signature Sennheiser Sound, Refined: Experience brilliant, emotionally rich audio with a high fidelity audiophile-grade 7mm TrueResponse driver, meticulously tuned to deliver exceptional clarity, detail, and natural balance at any volume.
- Audiophile Grade Wireless Audio: Advanced Bluetooth codecs including aptX Lossless, aptX Adaptive, and AAC preserve every detail, so music, movies, and games sound immersive, dynamic, and true to the source.

Fit often matters more than any single spec. Tom’s Guide flags the design as potentially less accommodating for smaller ears, and RTINGS says that choosing suitable tips and achieving a secure seal is necessary for consistent audio. Try each included tip size, play a bass-heavy track, and check that the sound stays consistent and the seal feels stable before you rely on the earbuds day to day.
Repairability and long-term ownership
Sennheiser says both the earbuds and the charging case have user-replaceable batteries, and that a compact screwdriver is used to replace them. Reviewers single this out as the MTW5’s clearest ownership advantage, because most earbuds in this class are sealed and not designed for battery swaps.

Three limits apply. The sources do not establish that replacement cells are sold in every region. No lifespan figure has been quantified, so replaceability supports a repairability argument but does not promise a longer working life. And compatibility is not established for unverified generic cells, so avoid buying them on the strength of this feature. If longevity is part of your decision, confirm that genuine replacement batteries are sold where you live before you buy.
Features and phone compatibility
Sennheiser lists Dolby Atmos spatial audio with head tracking and four microphones per earbud. Those features depend on your device. RTINGS notes that some desirable Apple functions require a compatible iOS device, which matters if you are weighing the MTW5 against the AirPods Pro 3. The high-resolution transmission figure also assumes a phone and codec that support it, so check your device’s settings before counting on that benefit.
Price
TechRadar reported launch pricing of $300 / £250 / AU$499 in September 2026. Those are launch figures, not a current price. Regional prices and stock change over time, so check a local listing before you decide.

Quick Recap
Who should buy the MTW5, and who should look elsewhere
Choose the MTW5 if:
- Natural, detailed sound and a tunable profile matter more to you than class-leading ANC.
- You want earbuds whose batteries you can replace yourself, and you are willing to confirm that parts are available where you live.
- You can get a comfortable, secure seal with the included tips.
Look elsewhere first if:
- ANC is your top priority, because Expert Reviews and RTINGS both place other models ahead.
- You rely on noise cancellation for long flights or commutes, since the ANC-on battery figures are substantially shorter than the headline numbers.
- You have smaller ears and cannot get a secure seal with the included tips.
- You are an iPhone user who wants Apple-specific features, in which case compare the AirPods Pro 3 directly.
