But both watches still require delicate display-first opening, and the AirPods 5 charging case battery could not be reached without destroying the case. iFixit scored Series 12 and Ultra 4 at 4/10 and AirPods 5 at 2/10; those are iFixit assessments, not an industry-wide certification.
What changed—and what did not
Repairability is more than whether a component can physically be removed. Access, required skill and tools, replacement parts and instructions, and the ability to reassemble a device without compromising its sealing all matter. On those measures, iFixit found specific improvements, not a broad shift to easy consumer repairs.

Apple Watch Series 12: a better battery adhesive, but a hard route in
iFixit found a stretch-release adhesive pull tab on the Series 12 battery. Instead of levering the battery out against adhesive, a repairer can pull the tab to release it. That is a practical improvement over earlier base models, but it does not change the access problem: the display is still the entry point to the battery and other internals.

The opening is delicate. iFixit describes heating the display, cutting the adhesive around its perimeter, and using a thin, depth-marked metal pick because sensitive cables sit close behind the seam. A slip can damage the display or those cables. This teardown is not a validated beginner repair guide, and iFixit described its new pick as forthcoming; the source does not establish that it is currently available or that an ordinary pick has equivalent depth markings.
The four Pentalobe screws on the back do not provide a shortcut to the battery: iFixit says they expose only the sensor assembly, and removing them compromises waterproofing. The simpler press-style display connector is another design change, but it comes with a trade-off: replacing the screen requires removing and replacing the battery too.

iFixit measured the Series 12 battery at 1.461 Wh, compared with 1.403 Wh in the 46 mm Series 11. These are teardown battery ratings, not repairability or battery-life measurements.
Apple Watch Ultra 4: familiar access, familiar score
iFixit describes the Ultra 4’s repair experience as essentially unchanged from the preceding Ultra generations. As with Series 12, a repairer must enter through the display to reach the battery. The Ultra 4 received 4/10, the same score iFixit reports for the three preceding Ultra generations.

iFixit’s teardown lists the Ultra 4 battery at 2.444 Wh and the Ultra 3 comparison battery at 2.313 Wh. These capacity ratings do not show how long either watch lasts in use.
AirPods 5: the earbuds are more accessible than the case
In its September 29, 2026 teardown, iFixit opened the AirPods 5 earbuds around the driver and removed a battery. The cells have prongs, but the left and right batteries differ slightly in polarity and physical construction, so a replacement must match the side. iFixit reports versions with and without wireless charging in the case; both versions have active noise cancellation and an IP57 dust- and water-resistance rating, according to the teardown.

Battery access still requires heat and careful prying. iFixit reports that a lower-heat hair dryer and clamp worked in its careful opening attempt, but another attempt melted plastic. That result should not be read as a simple DIY recipe: the teardown demonstrates that removal is possible, not that it is low-risk or easy for an inexperienced owner.
The case is the bigger obstacle. iFixit found tight seams and plastic welds instead of screws, and says it could not reach the case battery without destroying the enclosure. Its report also says Apple offered no AirPods 5 replacement parts or repair manuals, and that Apple’s Self Service Repair program did not provide a repair path for these earbuds at publication. iFixit gave AirPods 5 2/10, the highest score it had given AirPods; that relative improvement reflects the earbuds’ battery access, not a serviceable case.

How the scores compare—and what they mean
iFixit’s scores summarize its own teardown assessments under an evolving rubric. They are not an industry-wide standard, and they do not predict repair prices, repair rates, or device lifespan. For the listed Apple Watches, iFixit’s 2026 scorecard cites adhesive-heavy tight seams and the absence of official repair parts or instructions as drawbacks; backward-compatible band replacement is an easy repair.

The smartwatch comparison illustrates why access design matters: iFixit contrasts Apple’s glued display seam with Pixel Watch 5’s screw-and-gasket approach. For earbuds, Fairphone Fairbuds show a different design choice through replaceable cells and a modular case. iFixit also describes the Fairbuds XL as supporting tool-free battery replacement and modular parts. These alternatives are examples of designs iFixit considers more serviceable, not evidence that every repair is effortless or risk-free.
