Yes. Street Fighter Secret Lair cards can be played in Commander under the normal Commander rules. The crossover theme and Secret Lair printing do not make them illegal. Each card must still match your commander’s color identity, follow the singleton rule, and remain absent from the current Commander ban list.
You do not need an in-Magic “Universes Within” version. Wizards of the Coast treats the Street Fighter designs and their in-Magic counterparts as equivalent game pieces; the version you own changes presentation and collecting value, not the card’s gameplay identity.

Why the Street Fighter printing is legal
The Secret Lair x Street Fighter drop contains mechanically unique Magic cards rather than cards that exist only as novelty artwork. Wizards described the drop in its 2021 What Happened in Magic Showcase 2021? announcement by saying, “You can find these mechanically unique cards in the upcoming Secret Lair drop.” That wording matters: the cards have normal Magic rules text and are intended to function in formats that accept their card types and legality.

Its card pool is not limited to a recent set-rotation window, so an eligible card from a Secret Lair release can be used alongside cards from ordinary expansion sets, supplemental products, and other permitted releases. The Street Fighter setting is flavor; it is not a separate border treatment or a rule that excludes the card from Commander.

Wizards’ later Secret Lair policy described in-Magic versions as “equivalent game pieces” and said the goal was to provide “options for finding the game pieces you want to use.” In practical terms, that means the Street Fighter version is a valid physical card for gameplay, while an in-Magic version is an alternative presentation of the same design.
The three Commander checks that still control legality
Legality is determined card by card. Before putting a Street Fighter card in a deck, apply the same checks you would use for any other Commander card.
| Check | What to verify | What failure means |
|---|---|---|
| Color identity | Every color represented by the card’s mana cost, rules text, characteristic-defining abilities, color indicator, or other relevant face of the card must fit within the commander’s color identity. | A card outside that identity cannot be included, even if its Street Fighter artwork is legal in Commander generally. |
| Singleton construction | Except for basic lands and cards whose rules explicitly allow multiples, a deck may contain only one card with a given English name, including its commander. | You cannot add both versions as separate copies to get around the one-copy limit; they are equivalent game pieces for deck construction. |
| Commander ban list | Check the current Commander ban list when you build or submit the deck. | A card that appears on the current list is not legal, regardless of whether it came from Secret Lair or has an in-Magic counterpart. |
These checks are independent. A card can be generally legal in Commander but fail your deck’s color identity. Conversely, a card can fit the identity and singleton rule but become unusable if the format’s ban list changes.

Color identity is broader than the mana cost
Do not look only at the colored symbols in the upper-right corner. Commander color identity also accounts for colored mana symbols in rules text and abilities, color indicators, and characteristic-defining information. A colorless-looking ability that includes a colored symbol can therefore affect deck construction. If a card has more than one face, review the information that contributes to its color identity under the current Commander rules.

When in doubt, use the card’s current Oracle wording and a current Commander rules reference rather than relying on the printed text alone. Secret Lair cards can have unusual wording, reminder text, or a different layout, but their official rules text is what determines how the card functions.
Can Chun-Li or Ryu be your commander?
A Street Fighter character can serve as your commander only if that particular card satisfies the normal commander eligibility requirement: it must be a legendary creature, or otherwise have a rule that expressly allows it to be your commander. The franchise name does not grant an exception.
Check the type line first
Look at the card’s type line, not just its character name or artwork. If it identifies the card as a legendary creature, it can normally occupy the command zone. If it is a nonlegendary creature, planeswalker, or another card type without a commander-enabling ability, it belongs in the 99 rather than the command zone.
Build around the card’s color identity
Once a character qualifies as a commander, its color identity defines which other cards may appear in the deck. A mono-color identity permits only cards with that color identity and colorless cards; a multicolor identity permits cards whose identities are subsets of it. The card’s printed Street Fighter frame does not alter this calculation.

Use the same test for the 99
If you are not using Chun-Li, Ryu, or another character as commander, the card can still be included in the 99 when its color identity fits the chosen commander. The commander zone and the main deck use the same color-identity restriction; the difference is whether the card meets the commander-eligibility requirement.
Street Fighter cards and in-Magic versions
Wizards announced in-universe equivalents for the Street Fighter designs. The two versions have equivalent game functionality for deck construction and play. You can therefore choose the version that suits your collection without changing the deck’s rules profile.
| Choice | Gameplay effect | What can differ |
|---|---|---|
| Street Fighter artwork | Uses the same mechanically equivalent design as the in-Magic version. | Character names, artwork, frame presentation, and collector appeal. |
| In-Magic artwork | Uses the same mechanically equivalent design as the Street Fighter version. | Fantasy setting, illustration, and how recognizable the card is to a playgroup. |
| Foil finish | No rules change. | Surface treatment, curling risk, desirability, and price. |
| Nonfoil finish | No rules change. | Surface treatment, handling characteristics, and price. |
| Sealed Secret Lair product | No rules change once the cards are used in a deck. | You receive the product’s included cards and packaging, with cost and availability dependent on the seller and market date. |
| Individual single | No rules change. | You can buy only the card you need, with condition, finish, and current availability affecting cost. |
Owning an in-Magic copy is not a prerequisite for using the Street Fighter copy. Likewise, owning both does not allow two copies in a normal Commander deck. Choose one physical game piece for a given card name unless a card’s own rules or a format-specific exception says otherwise.
How to verify a card before a game
- Identify the exact card. Record the card name and, if relevant, whether you are using the Street Fighter or in-Magic version. Different cards in the drop can have different type lines and color identities.
- Read the current Oracle text. Printed wording can be abbreviated or updated. Use the official card database or the rules reference used by your event to confirm the current text.
- Determine commander eligibility. If you want the card in the command zone, confirm that its type line and abilities permit it to be a commander. Otherwise, plan to use it in the 99.
- Calculate color identity. Include every relevant colored mana symbol and color indicator, not just the casting cost. Compare that identity with your commander’s identity.
- Apply singleton construction. Search the deck for the same card name and remove duplicate copies unless a basic-land or card-specific exception applies. Treat the two equivalent versions as the same design for this purpose.
- Check the current ban list. Ban lists can change independently of a product release. Verify the status immediately before an event if the deck has not been played recently.
- Confirm event policy. A store, league, or private group may impose additional house rules about crossover themes, card condition, or acceptable substitutes. Those local policies are separate from baseline Commander legality.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
“It is a crossover card, so it must be casual-only”
The setting does not determine legality. The relevant questions are the card’s rules, type, color identity, singleton status, and ban-list status. A crossover card is not automatically a silver-bordered novelty card or a prohibited promotional object.

“I need the Universes Within card”
You do not. The in-Magic printing is an alternative game piece. Use the Street Fighter card if you prefer its art and character presentation, or use the in-Magic version if that better matches your collection. Both represent the same gameplay design for deck construction.
“Different names mean I can play both”
Do not assume that two treatments create two independent slots. The equivalent-game-piece policy is intended to let players choose a presentation, not to create extra copies of a card. If you want to include a second copy, verify that the cards are genuinely different designs and that the Commander rules permit both.
“A character can be my commander because it is famous”
Fame and character status have no rules effect. Check the type line and any commander-enabling ability. A card that fails that test can still be a legal card in the 99 if it passes the color-identity and ban-list checks.

“The product’s release date guarantees today’s status”
Release information establishes where the card came from, not its permanent status in the format. Always use the current Commander ban list and current Oracle wording when preparing a deck for an event.

Choosing which version to play
For gameplay, select the copy that is easiest for your group to identify and that you can keep in tournament-ready condition. The Street Fighter artwork may be the reason you bought the card, while the in-Magic artwork may be easier for players unfamiliar with the crossover to recognize. Neither choice changes its rules text.
For collecting, compare four practical factors: artwork, finish, whether you want sealed product or a single, and current price and availability. Sealed product provides the complete included presentation but may contain cards you do not need. Singles let you target a specific card and finish. Foils and nonfoils can differ in handling and market demand even though they play identically.
Because prices and inventory change, treat any listing as time-sensitive. Check the card’s condition, language, finish, and edition before buying, especially when a deck list specifies a particular version for visual consistency.

- A deck list that uses the exact card names and identifies your commander.
- The physical Street Fighter cards or equivalent in-Magic cards you intend to play, not a mixture that creates accidental duplicates.
- Current information about the Commander ban list and the event’s house rules.
- Uniform, opaque sleeves if the cards have visibly different backs or finishes.
- A way to show the card’s current Oracle wording if a printed layout causes confusion.
If another player questions a card, explain that it is a mechanically unique Secret Lair card and that Wizards announced equivalent in-Magic game pieces. A judge or event organizer can make the final ruling for that event, particularly if a local policy is stricter than the baseline format rules.
Practical decision checklist
Use this short test whenever you add one of these cards to a list:
- Is this the exact card design I intend to play?
- Does its type line allow it to be my commander, if that is my plan?
- Does its complete color identity fit my commander?
- Is there only one copy of the design in the deck, apart from an explicit exception?
- Is it absent from the current Commander ban list?
- Does the event allow the physical version and finish I am bringing?
When all six answers are yes, the Street Fighter printing itself is not a barrier to Commander play.
