Are Star Wars Games Usually Rated Higher Than the Movies?

Not demonstrably. Metacritic’s top-ranked Star Wars game, the Xbox version of Knights of the Old Republic, scores 94, above the 90 Metascore for the top-ranked film, Star Wars (1977). That establishes that a game can outrank a movie—not that Star Wars games usually score higher. Metacritic says its games list is incomplete, and the available rankings do not provide a complete, like-for-like franchise average.

What the Metacritic rankings show

Comparing Metascores within Metacritic is the clearest available way to look at critics’ ratings across games and films: both features use the same aggregator and score type. In the page snapshots accessed October 4, 2026, the highest-ranked entries were:

Category Entry Metascore
Game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Xbox, 2003) 94
Game Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II (PC, 1997) 91
Game Star Wars Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron II (GameCube, 2001) 90
Film Star Wars (1977) 90
Film The Last Jedi (2017) 84
Film The Empire Strikes Back (1980) 82

The game rankings come from Metacritic’s ranked Star Wars videogames feature; the film figures come from its Star Wars movie ranking. These scores and rankings are page-snapshot values, not permanent ratings.

Why that does not answer “usually”

A comparison of the leaders tells you about the best-ranked entries, not the typical game and typical film. To establish “usually,” you would need to define which releases count and compare a complete, consistently rated set—for example, reviewed console and PC games against theatrical films—using a chosen statistic such as the mean or median. The available rankings do not supply that controlled franchise-wide comparison.

Star Wars: Heritage Pack - Nintendo Switch
  • The following games are included in the cartridge: STAR WARS Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy (3.6 GB)
  • STAR WARS Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast (1.1 GB)
  • STAR WARS Episode I Racer (254 MB)
  • STAR WARS Republic Commando (2.5 GB)
  • STAR WARS: The Force Unleashed (3.4 GB)

Metacritic explicitly says its games database does not contain every Star Wars game, noting that many older titles pre-date the service; its feature also excludes mobile games and compilations. That incomplete coverage makes the game list especially unsuitable as a full population from which to infer an average.

Keep Tomatometer percentages separate

Rotten Tomatoes offers another way to see film reception, but its Tomatometer is not the same measure as Metacritic’s 0–100 Metascore. In Rotten Tomatoes’ page snapshot accessed October 4, 2026, A New Hope and The Force Awakens each had a 93% Tomatometer, The Last Jedi had 91%, and Solo: A Star Wars Story had 69%. Those percentages should not be compared directly with game Metascores. See Rotten Tomatoes’ Star Wars film ranking.

A recent game is one data point, not a trend

On October 2, 2026, GamesRadar+ reported that Star Wars: Galactic Racer had an 88 Metascore after 50 reviews, making it the fifth-best-rated Star Wars game at that time. That is a dated report of one game’s score snapshot, not evidence that games as a group usually outrate the films. Review totals and aggregator scores can change; GamesRadar+’s report is at its October 2, 2026 article.

What a fairer franchise comparison would require

  • Choose the rating: critic scores and audience ratings are different questions; the cited evidence does not provide a complete aligned audience comparison.
  • Define the game set: decide whether to include every platform release, remakes or ports, mobile titles, and compilations. Metacritic’s feature excludes some of these and misses older games.
  • Choose the unit: a game may have different platform-specific scores, as the 94 belongs specifically to the Xbox version of Knights of the Old Republic.
  • Compare like with like: use the same aggregator and score type across both media, then calculate a mean or median for a defined set rather than comparing only ranked-list leaders.
