Are Sony WH-CH720N Headphones Good for Phone Calls? Microphone Quality Explained

Short answer: The Sony WH-CH720N is suitable for everyday Bluetooth calls in a quiet or moderately calm place. Its built-in microphone can sound reasonably natural, but loud traffic, transit, wind and busy conversations can overwhelm it. Choose it for convenience and routine chats, not for consistently clear speech in noisy environments or high-stakes work calls.

What the WH-CH720N can and cannot do on calls

The WH-CH720N supports hands-free Bluetooth calling when the connected phone supports the HFP (Hands-Free Profile) or HSP (Headset Profile) Bluetooth profile. Sony recommends HFP when a phone offers both profiles. The call microphone is built into the left earcup, so the headset does not need a separate boom microphone.

That compatibility means you can answer and speak through the headphones, but compatibility is not the same as excellent voice isolation. Independent testing from RTINGS describes the integrated microphone as adequate: speech is captured fairly naturally in quieter conditions, while louder sounds can make the speaker difficult to understand. RTINGS labels its microphone section “In Development,” so its observations should be treated as useful guidance rather than a universal score for every phone, application or noise environment.

In practical terms, expect a convenient headset for ordinary conversations, short meetings and calls from a calm room. If callers must understand every word while you are beside a busy road, on public transport or in a crowded office, the WH-CH720N is a conditional choice rather than a dependable one.

How clear is the built-in microphone?

Quiet rooms and calm outdoor locations

In a quiet room, the microphone’s voice pickup is the strongest part of the call experience. A caller should generally hear a natural-sounding voice, provided the earcups are worn correctly and the phone has routed the call to the headset. A calm home office, hotel room or lightly occupied street fits the conditions in which the WH-CH720N is most defensible.

“Natural” does not mean studio quality. The microphone is integrated into a consumer noise-cancelling headset, not positioned on a close boom beside your mouth. Speaking at a normal volume and keeping the headset seated correctly gives the processing the best chance of preserving intelligibility.

Moderate background noise

With moderate, steady background sound, callers may still understand you, but clarity can become less consistent. The system has to distinguish your voice from the environment using the earcup microphone and Sony’s voice-pickup processing. A quiet café or a home with some appliance noise may be workable; results depend on how loud and variable the competing sound is.

Loud traffic, transit and nearby speech

The key limitation is separation from loud sound. RTINGS reports that louder noise can overwhelm the microphone system and make speech hard for the other person to follow. That makes the WH-CH720N a poor bet for calls beside heavy traffic, in a train station, on a bus or in a crowded room where several people are talking.

Noise-cancelling performance that makes music easier for you to hear should not be interpreted as equivalent noise suppression for the person on the call. The two paths are different: active noise cancellation acts on what reaches your ears, while the outgoing call depends on the microphone and its voice-processing algorithms.

Sony’s voice-pickup and wind-noise claims, explained

Sony’s feature description for the WH-CH720N mentions voice-pickup processing, a call microphone and beamforming. Beamforming uses multiple microphone signals to emphasize sound arriving from a preferred direction, helping the headset focus on speech. These are manufacturer feature descriptions, not a guarantee that every noisy call will be clear.

Sony also describes a wind-noise-reduction structure. Its clarification is important: that structure reduces wind noise for listening and does not reduce noise for the person receiving your call. In other words, the headphones may make windy audio more comfortable for you while your caller still hears wind affecting the microphone. Do not treat the listening-side wind claim as an outgoing voice-isolation promise.

Using the WH-CH720N for phone calls

Before answering

  1. Pair the headphones with the phone and confirm that the Bluetooth connection is active.
  2. Check that the phone has selected the WH-CH720N as the call audio device. Some phones initially place a call on the handset even when the headphones are connected.
  3. Start or answer a call, then use the phone’s audio-route control if you need to switch from the handset to the headphones.
  4. Keep the left and right earcups on their matching sides. Sony identifies the microphone for calls as being on the left unit, and incorrect placement can affect call audio.

Phone menus differ by operating system and model, so the labels may not exactly match these descriptions. The essential check is that both the incoming sound and the microphone route through the WH-CH720N rather than the phone itself.

What the caller may hear from your side

The caller can hear your voice through the left-unit microphone, along with whatever environmental sound reaches its processing system. In a quiet setting that balance is usually acceptable. In loud or gusty conditions, the environment can compete with your speech enough to produce muffling, masking or reduced intelligibility.

Using the WH-CH720N with a laptop or video-call app

Computers often expose separate playback and recording endpoints for Bluetooth headsets. When available, Sony advises choosing “Headset (WH-CH720N Hands-Free)” for both the speaker and microphone in the calling application or the computer’s sound settings. The hands-free endpoint activates the Bluetooth call profile and the headset microphone; selecting a stereo-only playback endpoint may leave the app using the computer’s internal microphone.

  1. Open the audio or device settings inside your meeting application.
  2. Set the microphone/input to Headset (WH-CH720N Hands-Free).
  3. Set the speaker/output to Headset (WH-CH720N Hands-Free) when that endpoint is listed.
  4. Use the app’s test call or microphone meter to confirm that your voice is registering.
  5. If the endpoint is missing or silent, disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth, then check the computer’s system sound panel and the app again.

Exact menu names vary among Windows, macOS, browser-based services and individual applications. The important distinction is the word Hands-Free: it identifies the profile intended for two-way calls.

Troubleshooting when a call sounds wrong

The other person cannot hear you

  • Verify that the call is routed to the WH-CH720N instead of the phone or computer’s built-in microphone.
  • On a computer, select Headset (WH-CH720N Hands-Free) as the input device in the app.
  • Confirm the earcups are on the correct left and right sides.
  • End the call, disconnect Bluetooth and establish the HFP or HSP connection again.
  • Check the app’s microphone permission and input mute state.

You cannot hear the other person

  • Choose the WH-CH720N as the call speaker or audio route on the phone.
  • On a computer, select the hands-free endpoint for output as well as input.
  • Raise the call volume on the phone or computer separately from media volume if the system provides separate controls.
  • Reconnect the headset if the call profile did not activate correctly.

The caller reports echo, muffling or dropouts

  • Move to a quieter location and speak at a normal, steady volume.
  • Make sure the headset is seated correctly and the left earcup is on the left side.
  • Test the same call with the phone nearby to reduce the chance of a weak Bluetooth connection.
  • Compare the app’s hands-free endpoint with the computer’s built-in microphone to identify whether the problem is routing or environmental noise.

Is hearing your own voice normal?

Yes. Sony explains that wearers may hear their own voice through the headset microphone during calls. You may also hear some ambient or operating sounds. This sidetone effect is intentional: it gives you feedback about your speaking voice and helps prevent the closed earcups from making you talk unnaturally loudly. Hearing your voice is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the microphone is defective.

Battery life and multipoint: useful, but separate from mic quality

Sony Electronics lists up to 35 hours of music playback with Bluetooth when DSEE is off and AAC is used. That is a manufacturer specification for music under stated settings, not a measured call-runtime figure, and actual endurance varies with settings and conditions. It also does not indicate how clearly the microphone transmits speech.

Sony’s product page states: “The WH-CH720N supports Multipoint Connection, allowing you to pair with two devices at the same time and switch between them as needed.” Multipoint can be convenient if you move between a phone and a laptop, but the calling device still has to select the correct hands-free audio route.

Who should buy it for calls?

Use case Suitability Why
Quiet home or office calls Good fit The microphone can capture speech reasonably naturally when competing sound is low.
Routine calls in a moderately calm place Usually suitable Convenient Bluetooth hands-free calling, with some variability from background noise and phone routing.
Occasional calls outdoors Conditional Works best away from heavy traffic and strong wind; the wind structure does not protect the caller from wind noise.
Busy café, open-plan office or family room Risky Competing voices and changing noise can reduce intelligibility.
Traffic, trains, stations or other loud locations Not recommended for dependable clarity Loud sounds can overwhelm the integrated microphone according to independent testing.
Critical meetings where every word matters Use caution A boom microphone or a quieter environment is a safer design choice than relying on this integrated mic alone.

How to judge it for your own calls

Call quality depends on the phone, app, Bluetooth profile, placement and environment, so a short personal test is more useful than a marketing label. Record or place a test call from the location where you actually expect to use the headset.

  1. Test in a quiet room and ask the other person whether your voice is clear and natural.
  2. Repeat with the background sound you care about, such as a fan, café noise or a street corner.
  3. Walk, turn your head and speak at a normal volume rather than reading directly into the microphone.
  4. Test both a regular phone call and your main computer calling app, because each can select a different audio endpoint.
  5. Repeat after reconnecting Bluetooth if the first result sounds unusually muffled or one-sided.

Pay attention to intelligibility rather than whether the headset merely connects. A connection can be technically active while the phone is still using the wrong microphone or while environmental noise masks your speech.

Verdict

The Sony WH-CH720N is good enough for casual phone calls in quiet to moderately calm conditions. It offers Bluetooth hands-free compatibility, a reasonably natural integrated microphone in favorable conditions and practical computer support when the hands-free endpoint is selected correctly. Its weakness is noisy-environment speech isolation: loud traffic, transit, crowds and wind can make you difficult to understand, and Sony’s wind-noise structure is not an outgoing call-noise guarantee. Buy or keep it for everyday convenience; choose a headset with a closer boom microphone or a quieter calling setup when dependable clarity in loud places is the priority.
