In the United States, a signature inserted into a PDF with Mac Preview can be legally binding. The federal Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN) generally says a covered signature, contract, or record cannot be rejected solely because it is electronic. That protection is not an automatic guarantee for every document: the signer must intend to sign, the transaction must satisfy any other legal requirements, and the recipient may require a particular signing or verification process.
Preview gives you a convenient way to place a handwritten mark in a PDF. Apple’s instructions do not state that Preview verifies identity, creates a tamper-evident certificate, or guarantees that a court or counterparty will enforce the result. Think of Preview as a tool for adding an electronic signature, not as a legal-certification service.

What U.S. law actually says
The starting point for many U.S. transactions is the federal Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act, commonly called ESIGN and codified at 15 U.S.C. chapter 96. Section 7001(a)(1) provides that, for a transaction in or affecting interstate or foreign commerce, “a signature, contract, or other record relating to such transaction may not be denied legal effect, validity, or enforceability solely because it is in electronic form.” A contract also cannot be rejected solely because an electronic signature or electronic record was used in its formation.
That rule answers a narrow question: electronic form alone is not a valid reason to disregard a covered signature. It does not decide whether a particular person signed, whether the person intended to be bound, whether the contract was otherwise formed, or whether another law imposes a special formality.

The statutory definition includes ordinary electronic marks
Under 15 U.S.C. § 7006(5), an electronic signature is “an electronic sound, symbol, or process, attached to or logically associated with a contract or other record and executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the record.” The wording does not require a particular application, brand, cryptographic certificate, or stylus.
A handwritten image placed into a PDF can fit that broad definition when the signer adopts it with the intention of signing. The definition itself, however, does not prove who applied the mark or what that person intended. Those facts may need to be established from the document, surrounding communications, account records, testimony, or other evidence.
ESIGN has important boundaries
Section 7001(b) preserves requirements concerning substantive rights and obligations. It also generally does not force someone to agree to use or accept electronic records or signatures. A recipient can therefore ask for a different workflow, a wet-ink original, notarization, a platform with an audit trail, or another specified method, subject to the governing law.

Section 7001(c) sets conditions for satisfying certain consumer written-disclosure requirements electronically. Section 7001(d) addresses retained records: when the law requires retention, the electronic record must accurately reflect the information and remain accessible and reproducible for later reference. These provisions are why saving only a temporary Preview state, screenshot, or image detached from the final document is poor practice.

What Mac Preview does—and does not do
Apple’s guide, “Fill out and sign PDF forms in Preview on Mac,” describes three ways to create a signature:
- Write on the Mac trackpad.
- Write on paper and capture the handwriting with the Mac’s built-in camera.
- Use a nearby iPhone or iPad to write the signature.
After creation, you click the saved signature and place it in the PDF. Preview is therefore adding a mark that is associated with the page content. The guide explains the user interface; it does not promise legal enforceability or identify the signer for a recipient.
Preview’s markup should also be distinguished from a certificate-based digital signature. “Electronic signature” is the broad legal category defined by ESIGN. A digital signature is a technical method that can use certificates, cryptography, and validation data to show who signed and whether the document changed. A Preview signature image may be perfectly usable for a low-risk document, but it does not automatically provide those additional technical assurances.

Preview may be adequate for an ordinary U.S. document when the signer knowingly adopts the mark, both sides accept electronic signing, and no special statute or recipient instruction requires something else. Examples can include a routine agreement, an approval form, or a document exchanged by email where the parties have an established electronic workflow.

Use the exact final document. If the other party sends a PDF for signature, do not sign an earlier draft and assume the mark will carry over. Confirm that all pages and attachments are present, complete required fields, and place the signature where the document requests it. A signature on the wrong version can create a factual dispute even if the electronic-signature rule applies.
How to sign a PDF in Preview while preserving useful evidence
- Open the final PDF in Preview. Verify the filename, date, page count, attachments, and any version or reference number against the sender’s instructions.
- Show the markup tools. In Preview, select the Markup toolbar and choose the signature tool. The labels can vary slightly by macOS release, but the control is the signature icon in Markup.
- Create or select your signature. Choose trackpad, camera, or iPhone/iPad capture. Review the result for missing strokes, reversed orientation, or an accidental crop before placing it.
- Place and size the signature. Drag it to the designated line, adjust its size without obscuring dates or terms, and complete any initials, checkboxes, or text fields the form requires.
- Inspect every page. Scroll from beginning to end. Look for hidden pages, blank fields, clipped text, or a signature that landed on the wrong line.
- Save a new completed copy. Use a clear filename that identifies the document and date. Keeping the original unsigned PDF separately helps show what changed.
- Return the completed PDF through the requested channel. Follow the recipient’s instructions rather than substituting a screenshot or an image of one page.
- Preserve the surrounding record. Retain the signed PDF and the email or message that requested the signature, identified the document, or confirmed acceptance. Store them where you can retrieve and reproduce them later.
These steps improve documentation; they do not turn Preview into an identity-verification or certificate service.
Questions that determine enforceability
Did the person intend to sign?
Intent is central to ESIGN’s definition. A person who deliberately opens the final document, adds a signature to the requested line, and sends it as the completed agreement has stronger evidence of adoption than someone whose signature image was copied into a draft without authorization. A disputed or accidental placement can require evidence beyond the appearance of the mark.

Did the parties agree to electronic signing?
ESIGN generally does not require a person to accept electronic records. A counterparty may decline a Preview signature or specify a different process. Check the contract, instructions, procurement portal, or filing rules before signing. Silence is not a reliable substitute for an explicit acceptance requirement when the transaction is important.

Does another rule require a special form?
ESIGN preserves other substantive and procedural requirements. The answer can change with the governing jurisdiction, the type of instrument, and the transaction. Extra care is warranted for wills or other testamentary instruments, family-law matters, court filings, notarizations or oaths, real-estate recording, government forms, and regulated transactions. This list is a reason to verify the applicable rule, not a claim that every item is automatically excluded from electronic signing.
Can you connect the signature to the signer and the final record?
A visible signature is only one piece of evidence. Relevant facts can include who controlled the computer or email account, how the document was delivered, whether the signer confirmed completion, and whether the PDF remained unchanged afterward. Preview’s basic markup does not, by itself, establish all of those facts.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Factor | Preview markup | Higher-assurance signing workflow |
|---|---|---|
| Signer identity | Not established by the Apple Preview instructions; relies on surrounding evidence. | May include account authentication, identity checks, or other controls, depending on the service. |
| Intent and consent | Shown mainly by the signer’s actions and communications. | Can include a consent screen, explicit acknowledgement, and a recorded signing event. |
| Timestamp and audit history | File metadata and correspondence may provide context; a complete audit trail is not promised. | Often records events, timestamps, participants, and delivery steps. |
| Document integrity | A placed image does not by itself provide certificate-based tamper detection. | May apply cryptographic sealing or post-signing change detection. |
| Acceptance | Depends on the counterparty and applicable rules. | Still depends on the counterparty and applicable rules, even when technical evidence is stronger. |
| Retention and export | You must save and organize the completed PDF and related messages. | The workflow may provide an exportable completion record, but you still need an accessible copy. |
A more elaborate workflow can supply useful evidence, but no software choice overrides a statutory requirement or guarantees a court’s result.

Recordkeeping requirements and good practice
When a law requires a record to be retained, ESIGN’s retention rule calls for an electronic record that accurately reflects the information and remains accessible and reproducible for later reference. For a Preview-signed document, keep the completed PDF in its original form, not only as a printout or screenshot. Maintain a backup in a location your organization controls, and use filenames or folders that make the final version identifiable.
- Keep the unsigned source and the completed PDF as separate files.
- Preserve the email or message that transmitted the document and any acceptance response.
- Do not edit, compress, or re-save the signed PDF unless you understand how the change affects the record.
- Make sure authorized people can open and reproduce the file when needed.
- Follow any retention period or format rule imposed by the governing law, contract, or organization.
Common failure modes and fixes
The recipient says Preview signatures are not accepted
Do not assume ESIGN forces acceptance. Ask which method, identity check, notarization, or original-document requirement applies and follow that instruction if it is lawful and practical.
The signed file was changed afterward
Return to the last confirmed version, compare it with the copy that was signed, and ask the recipient whether a fresh signature is required. Keep both versions and the communications explaining the correction.

Gather evidence showing who had access, how the document was delivered, and what the alleged signer communicated. A copied image may look authentic while failing the intent and attribution questions that matter under ESIGN.
The PDF cannot be opened later
Export or save a standard PDF, test it on another device, and store an accessible backup. A record that cannot be reproduced creates a retention problem even if the original signing event was valid.
When to obtain specific legal guidance
Get advice from a qualified lawyer who can review the governing law and the actual document when the transaction is high-value, disputed, cross-border, regulated, or tied to a court, government agency, notarization, real-estate recording, family-law matter, or testamentary instrument. The federal rule discussed here is a general U.S. framework, not a conclusion about every state, country, document type, or contract.
For a routine U.S. agreement with a willing counterparty, a knowingly applied Preview signature can have legal effect. The enforceability question still turns on intent, authorization, applicable requirements, acceptance, and the evidence preserved around the completed PDF—not on the fact that Preview was used.
