Are Shorter Games Worth Buying? How to Judge a Game by Its Length

Yes—shorter games can be worth buying, including at full price, if their quality, pacing, price, and the time commitment you want make sense to you. There is no universal minimum number of hours that makes a game good value. Playtime-per-dollar can help compare games when maximizing hours is your priority, but it cannot measure how enjoyable or memorable those hours are.

There is no universal cutoff for a “short” game

What counts as short depends on the player and the kind of game. A focused campaign may suit someone who wants a complete story without a long commitment; someone looking for exploration, progression, multiplayer, or replay may prefer a game designed to last longer. Discussion of personal thresholds in GameSpot’s 2015 article on game length and Nintendo Life’s 2021 discussion of what players consider short illustrates that these judgments vary; neither establishes a standard number of hours.

So the useful question is not simply whether a game is short, but whether its expected experience is worth its price and fits what you want from it.

What playtime-per-dollar can—and cannot—tell you

For a quick comparison, divide the price you would actually pay by an expected playtime estimate. If a game costs $30 and you expect to spend 10 hours on it, that works out to $3 per expected hour. Treat that as one lens, not a score: the estimate may depend on whether it covers the main story, optional quests, completionist play, multiplayer, or replay.

MarketYourIndie’s 2026 analysis measured a curated pool of 6,954 paid games on August 15, 2026. Across five price bands above $10, it reported median cost per hour between $1.90 and $2.06, while median playtime ranged from 3.3 to 26 hours. The analysis used median playtime attached to up to 100 of each game’s most recent reviews and required at least 10 playtime values for a game to be measured. These are descriptive figures from that pool and method—not a recommended rate, a guarantee of what you will play, or proof that price determines quality. See MarketYourIndie’s methodology and analysis.

Playtime also has some relationship with how people respond to games, but that does not make hours a cause of satisfaction. A 2025 Federal Trade Commission working paper by Joel Waldfogel, Dmitri Reimers, and Michael Riedl examined observed Steam data. In its sample, 7,407 of 59,139 reviews for owned user-game combinations—12.5%—were not recommended. The authors report a negative, statistically significant association between playtime per dollar and the tendency not to recommend. This is an association in that dataset, not evidence that adding hours would make a particular game more satisfying. The paper also reports average realized playtime of 64.4 hours for owned games and 39.9 hours for unowned games in its sample; those averages are not predictions for an individual buyer. Compare games on the things that matter to you

Before buying, compare like with like. A main-story estimate is not directly comparable to a completionist estimate, and a multiplayer game may have a different kind of longevity from a single-player campaign. Check the listing for the same platform, edition, and region you intend to buy; prices and discounts can change.

What to compare Questions to ask
Expected playtime Does the estimate describe the core campaign, optional content, completion, multiplayer, or replay? Is it the kind of time you expect to spend?
Price What is the current price for your region, platform, and edition—not a different version or a past sale?
Quality and pacing Does available information suggest the experience is well-made and intentionally paced, or might extra hours come from repetition?
Personal fit Do you want a concise, focused experience, or are exploration, ongoing progression, replay, or multiplayer central to what you want?

Assessing quality alongside price is more useful than ranking games by length alone. As GameSpot’s discussion of game length notes, duration is only one part of how players judge a game’s value; a longer game is not automatically a better purchase, and a shorter one is not automatically a worse one.

When a shorter game may be the better buy

  • You want a contained story or a complete experience without a large time commitment.
  • The pacing and quality seem strong enough to justify the price, even if the campaign is brief.
  • You have limited gaming time and are more likely to finish a focused game than a sprawling one.
  • You would rather pay for the experience you want than maximize hours for every dollar.

When length should weigh more heavily

  • Your main goal is to get as many hours as possible from a fixed budget.
  • You especially enjoy exploration, replay, multiplayer, or extended progression.
  • The available playtime estimate is for a different kind of play than you expect—such as completionist time when you plan to play only the main story.

In those cases, compare the expected hours for the type of play you actually want, alongside the current price. If an estimate is unclear or the price feels too high, waiting for a discount is one option; a lower price changes the calculation, not the game’s length or quality.
