Their blades can injure a child or pet that enters the mowing area, and independent tests show that some models can injure hedgehogs and other small animals before detecting them. Keep people and animals off the lawn while the mower runs, schedule mowing for daylight where wildlife is present, and inspect the grass before every cycle. Sensors and automatic blade stops reduce some hazards but do not guarantee that a small animal will be detected in time.
What the evidence actually shows
Safety depends on which hazard you mean. For children and pets, manufacturer instructions consistently treat an operating mower as a machine that must be kept away from people and animals. For wildlife, the strongest published evidence concerns hedgehogs: controlled collision tests found major differences between models, and some mowers made contact before detecting the animal.

Those studies used dead hedgehogs in standardized experiments. They show that injury is possible and that detection systems are not infallible; they do not provide a percentage risk for every garden, mowing hour or currently sold model. A sensible owner should therefore treat a robot mower as unattended machinery with residual risk, not as a device that is automatically safe because it has sensors.

Yes. A dog, cat or other pet can be cut if it lies in the mower’s path, investigates the machine, or enters the lawn while it is operating. The exact danger varies by blade design, enclosure, software and the animal’s size, but built-in protection is not a substitute for separation.

Robomow’s RC Series safety guidance tells owners to keep children and pets off the lawn while the mower is mowing and to return it to the charging station until they have left. Kärcher similarly warns that lift and tip detection can deactivate the blades without eliminating the possibility of cuts; its casing-to-blade gap does not make contact impossible. These are model-specific instructions, so read the manual for your mower rather than assuming another brand’s safeguards apply.
If a pet enters the area, use the mower’s stop or pause control, or send it to the station, before opening a gate or approaching the animal. Do not rely on the mower to recognize a small dog, cat, tortoise or sleeping animal in time. Keep the same rule for visiting animals and wildlife that may wander into the garden.
Can children play outside while a robot mower is running?
No. Children should be off the mowing area whenever the blades can turn. A child may pick up the mower, place a hand under its edge, run across its path, or push a toy into the machine. Even if lifting the mower normally stops the blades, the stop may occur only after movement has begun, and the machine can still cause cuts during handling.

Set a household rule that the lawn is closed while the mower is active. If children need to go outside, pause the cycle and return the mower to its station; wait until it has stopped before allowing anyone onto the grass. Explain that the mower is not a toy and that an adult must control the stop procedure. Check the manual for the precise button, app command or physical switch on your model.

Can a robot mower kill a hedgehog?
It can. The published evidence does not establish how often this happens in ordinary gardens, but it does establish a plausible mechanism: a mower may touch a hedgehog before detecting it, and some tested machines caused injuries during contact.
Hedgehogs are particularly vulnerable because they may curl into a low, stationary ball when threatened. Their size can place them below or inside the detection zone used for larger obstacles. Other small animals may also be at risk, including leverets, fledglings and amphibians, although the studies summarized here were strongest for hedgehogs and did not measure every garden species.
A 2024 case series from the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research recorded 370 hedgehog injury cases involving electric gardening tools in Germany. Almost half of the animals in that selected set did not survive. The cases cannot be converted into a per-mower or population-wide fatality rate, but they show why an apparently minor contact can be fatal.

What the hedgehog tests found
| Study | Models tested | Main finding | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rasmussen and colleagues, 2021 | 18 robotic mower models | No model detected dependent juvenile hedgehogs under 200 g before contact. Some models caused extensive damage; others repeatedly caused no damage in the test. | Tests used dead European hedgehogs in controlled positions and weight classes, not live animals or normal garden conditions. |
| Rasmussen and colleagues, 2024 | 19 robotic mower models | All but one tested mower physically touched a hedgehog carcass before detecting it. Some caused injury and some did not. | The experiment does not provide an everyday incident rate or certify every model currently on sale. |
The earlier paper reported that pivoting blades, skid plates and front-wheel drive significantly improved its study-specific safety index. That is an association within that test, not proof that any mower with one of those features is safe. The later study found little evidence that the technical features it examined changed the probability of injury. Because the two studies reached different conclusions about feature effects, shoppers should not treat a single design label as a guarantee.

The 2024 paper also proposed a standardized hedgehog-safety test. A 2025 Leibniz Institute release described work on hedgehog dummies and standardized testing. These publications show that a common method is being developed; they do not establish a universal consumer certification label or a verified list of models that have passed one.
Why obstacle detection is not a guarantee
Obstacle sensors are generally designed to protect the machine, not to promise wildlife protection. They may use contact detection, cameras, ultrasonic sensing, boundary information or combinations of these systems. A small, dark, motionless animal can be difficult to distinguish from grass or soil, especially when it is below the sensor’s effective height.
In the 2024 19-model study, only one mower detected the hedgehog before any physical touch. That result means a feature advertised as “animal detection” should be read carefully: determine what animals, sizes, lighting conditions and stopping distances the manufacturer actually documents. Unless an independent test covers the exact model, assume that a sensor may stop the mower only after contact.
Should you run a robot mower at night?
If hedgehogs or other nocturnal wildlife may visit your garden, daytime-only operation is the safer default. The authors of the later hedgehog study specifically advised limiting mowing to daylight and checking the lawn for vulnerable animals before starting. Night operation also makes it harder for an owner to notice an animal, a trapped object or a malfunction.

Use the mower’s schedule settings to define a daytime window that fits your local light conditions. A practical routine is:
- Choose a start time after sunrise and an end time before dusk, allowing for seasonal changes.
- Disable overnight mowing rather than relying on a “quiet hours” or rain setting that may still permit a late cycle.
- Inspect the lawn shortly before the first run of the day, paying attention to dense borders, long grass, compost areas and sheltered corners.
- If you find a hedgehog, fledgling, amphibian or other vulnerable animal, keep the mower parked and contact a qualified wildlife rehabilitator or local rescue service for advice.
Daylight scheduling reduces exposure; it does not remove it. Wildlife can be present at any hour, and a daytime check remains necessary.
A pre-mowing safety checklist
- Clear people and pets. Confirm that children, dogs, cats and visitors are off the lawn.
- Inspect for wildlife. Look under shrubs, along edges and in tall or damp vegetation before the cycle begins.
- Check the mower. Look for damaged blades, a loose cover, blocked wheels or objects caught underneath. Follow the manual’s shutdown procedure before lifting or turning the machine over.
- Confirm the schedule. Use daylight hours in wildlife-prone areas and verify that a temporary holiday or rain setting has not enabled a night run.
- Secure access points. Check gates and openings so pets cannot enter the mowing zone unexpectedly.
- Know the stop control. Keep the app, remote, emergency button or station control accessible to every adult who may need to intervene.
How to evaluate a mower’s safety claims
When comparing models, separate documented controls from marketing language. Ask four questions before buying or installing one:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Is there independent testing of the exact model? Record the model number, test date and what the test measured. A result for a different model or an older hardware revision may not apply.
- Can operation be restricted to daylight? Look for a schedule with separate start and stop times, seasonal adjustment and a reliable return-to-station command.
- What does the manual say about people and animals? Warnings about children, pets, lifting, tipping and blade access are more useful than a general “safe” badge.
- What happens when an obstacle is detected? Determine whether the mower stops, reverses or merely changes direction, and whether the documentation states a minimum object size or stopping distance.
Do not call a mower “wildlife-safe” solely because it has a camera, ultrasonic sensor, pivoting blade, skid plate or front-wheel drive. The two peer-reviewed studies disagree about how strongly such features predict reduced injury, and neither establishes a universal guarantee.
What to do if an animal is injured
Stop the mower and keep people and pets away from the animal. Do not restart the machine to see whether the animal moves, and avoid handling a hedgehog or other wild animal more than necessary. Contact a local wildlife rescue or veterinarian for immediate instructions; laws and available services differ by location. If the mower is damaged, isolate it and follow the manufacturer’s procedure before inspection or blade replacement.
Bottom line for owners
Robot lawn mowers can be useful, but they are not a permission slip to leave the lawn unsupervised. Keep children and pets away whenever the mower can operate, use daylight schedules where wildlife is present, inspect the grass before each run, and treat every detection system as fallible. The hedgehog studies show real differences between machines and continuing work toward standardized testing, yet they do not support a blanket claim that any current model is safe for all wildlife.
