Riddles are good mental exercise in a limited, practical sense: they make you retrieve words, hold clues in mind, notice ambiguity and test possible answers. But no controlled study cited here shows that ordinary verbal riddles raise general intelligence, improve everyday thinking or prevent dementia. The strongest relevant evidence concerns different activities—structured crossword training and computerized cognitive tasks—so their findings cannot be presented as proof that riddle books deliver the same effects.

What solving a riddle can exercise

A well-written riddle forces a solver to work with incomplete information. You may need to remember a clue while interpreting the next one, switch between literal and figurative meanings, suppress an obvious but wrong answer, and generate alternatives. Those are real demands of the task. Repeated practice can make you more efficient at handling that kind of puzzle.

That last sentence is deliberately narrower than saying riddles make the brain “smarter.” Improvement on an activity can reflect familiarity with its vocabulary, conventions and answer patterns. It does not automatically mean better reasoning at work, safer decisions, stronger memory in daily life or a lower risk of disease.

Neuropsychologist Andrea Zammit described challenging puzzles as activities that “kind of like stretch your brain and your thinking” by using different cognitive systems in an Associated Press report published March 9, 2026. That is useful explanatory framing, not evidence from a riddle trial or a clinical recommendation.

What the research does—and does not—say about riddles

The available studies fall into several categories. They differ in the activity people practiced, the outcome researchers measured, the participants recruited and the length of follow-up. Treating them as interchangeable produces an exaggerated answer.

Activity studied Participants and design What improved or was associated What it does not establish about riddles
Ordinary verbal riddles No controlled riddle-specific study is identified in the evidence summarized here. No quantified cognitive benefit has been established. There is no basis for claiming a particular riddle schedule improves intelligence or prevents dementia.
Computerized crossword training 107 people with mild cognitive impairment (51 assigned to games and 56 to crosswords) in a randomized 78-week trial. Crosswords had a modest advantage over computerized games on the primary, baseline-adjusted ADAS-Cog outcome; some secondary outcomes did not differ. The intervention was structured computerized crosswords, not casual riddles, and the participants had MCI rather than being a general healthy population. NEJM Evidence trial
Computerized “brain-training” tasks Review of intervention studies. The clearest gains tend to occur on the tasks people practice; transfer to similar tasks is weaker and transfer to distant tasks or everyday cognition is limited. Getting better at a puzzle is not the same as broad cognitive improvement. Simons et al. review, PubMed
Online cognitive-training tasks 11,430 participants trained for six weeks in a 2010 study. Participants improved on practiced tasks, but the study found no transfer to untrained tasks, including closely related ones. This is evidence about online training tasks, not a direct test of riddles. Nature study
Rapid-object-detection speed training A specific intervention followed through a 20-year analysis using Medicare claims data, described by NIH in 2026. A 25% lower rate of dementia diagnosis was associated with that regimen. It does not test riddles, and an association for one speed-training program cannot be converted into proof that puzzles prevent dementia. NIH report, February 10, 2026

The closest randomized evidence: crosswords in mild cognitive impairment

Devanand and colleagues compared home-based computerized crossword training with computerized cognitive games in 107 people who had mild cognitive impairment. The randomized trial lasted 78 weeks. Fifty-six participants were assigned to crosswords and 51 to games.

Crossword training showed superior efficacy for the study’s primary outcome: baseline-adjusted change in the Alzheimer’s Disease Assessment Scale–Cognitive Subscale (ADAS-Cog). The authors’ conclusion was that “Home-based computerized training with crosswords demonstrated superior efficacy to games for the primary outcome of baseline-adjusted change in ADAS-Cog score over 78 weeks.” Read in context, this is a comparison within a defined clinical sample, not a statement that any word puzzle benefits everyone.

The advantage was modest, and not every secondary outcome differed between groups. The participants had MCI, the software delivered a structured intervention, and researchers followed a specified protocol. A person solving a printed riddle occasionally is doing something materially different. The trial therefore supports interest in puzzle-based cognitive activity without supplying an effect size for riddles or a general treatment recommendation.

Why “getting better at riddles” is not the same as broader brain health

Near transfer

Near transfer means improvement on a new task that resembles the practiced one. A person who learns common riddle constructions might recognize wordplay more quickly in another riddle. That is a plausible consequence of practice, but it still needs to be measured rather than assumed.

Far transfer

Far transfer would mean that riddle practice improves an importantly different ability, such as planning a household budget, remembering appointments or reasoning through an unfamiliar technical problem. The brain-training literature provides little support for routinely making that leap.

A review indexed by PubMed concluded that people often improve at the tasks they practice, while evidence becomes weaker for transfer to similar tasks and limited for distant tasks or everyday cognition. In the large 2010 online study, the researchers reported: “Although improvements were observed in every one of the cognitive tasks that were trained, no evidence was found for transfer effects to untrained tasks, even when those tasks were cognitively closely related.” That distinction is the central reason a riddle score should not be advertised as an intelligence score.

Benefits you can reasonably expect from riddles

  • Focused engagement: A riddle gives you a short problem that requires sustained attention until you reach, reject or defer an answer.
  • Language practice: Verbal riddles expose you to multiple meanings, puns, analogies and unusual word combinations. The measurable outcome you can safely claim is practice with those forms, not a guaranteed increase in vocabulary or reading ability.
  • Flexible interpretation: Good clues often punish a first, literal interpretation. Trying another framing can be an enjoyable way to practice mental flexibility within the puzzle.
  • Motivation to keep learning: Enjoyment matters because an activity people voluntarily return to is easier to sustain than an unpleasant exercise. Motivation is a reason to choose riddles, not proof of a medical effect.
  • Social interaction: Sharing a riddle creates a low-cost conversational and collaborative activity. Any social value should be described separately from claims about cognitive protection.

These are sensible descriptions of what the activity asks you to do and why someone might value it. They are not results from a randomized trial of ordinary riddle solving.

How to use riddles as a sensible mental activity

You do not need a proven “dose” to enjoy a puzzle. The available evidence does not establish that solving riddles for a particular number of minutes per day prevents decline or produces a measurable general benefit. Use a routine that fits your interest and stop treating the routine as a medical prescription.

  1. Choose an appropriate difficulty. Start with clues you can understand but cannot answer instantly. If every item is trivial, you are mostly repeating familiar patterns; if none is solvable, frustration replaces useful engagement.
  2. Attempt the clue before looking up an answer. State the literal interpretation, list alternative meanings and write down candidate answers. This makes the activity an active reasoning task rather than passive reading.
  3. Use a hint only after a genuine attempt. A hint can reveal the intended wordplay without ending the exercise. Record whether the problem was vocabulary, ambiguity, a missing fact or a misleading assumption.
  4. Explain the answer in your own words. If you cannot explain how each major clue fits, you may have guessed correctly. The explanation is a better indicator of understanding than a bare hit rate.
  5. Vary the material. Mix puns, lateral-thinking problems, logic clues and general-knowledge riddles. Variation prevents a narrow familiarity with one author’s repeated formats from looking like a broad cognitive gain.
  6. Keep a private progress note if you enjoy tracking. Log accuracy, time, hints and difficulty. Interpret changes as progress on your selected material unless an appropriately designed study shows otherwise.
  7. Pair puzzles with established health practices. Sleep, physical activity, management of medical conditions, hearing care, social connection and professional evaluation when symptoms appear have a different evidence base. Riddles should complement, not replace, those steps.

Choosing riddle books and apps without overpaying for promises

A printed collection such as riddle books for adults, a brain-teaser book or a book of riddles can be a perfectly reasonable entertainment purchase. Judge it by factors that affect your experience:

  • Are answers and explanations supplied, and are they clear enough to show how the clue works?
  • Does the collection label difficulty or mix easy, medium and difficult items?
  • Does it offer varied formats rather than repeating one pun pattern?
  • Is the text legible, and can you solve without an app subscription or distracting timer?
  • Does its marketing describe enjoyment and practice honestly instead of promising dementia prevention or a rise in intelligence?

No product label can turn the absence of riddle-specific controlled evidence into a clinical guarantee. Buy a book because you want regular puzzles, a gift, or a shared activity—not because a claim implies that it replaces assessment or treatment.

Common claims that go too far

“Riddles increase your IQ.”

There is no cited controlled study here demonstrating that ordinary riddles raise general intelligence or IQ. A higher score on the same style of riddle could simply reflect practice with that style.

“Riddles prevent dementia.”

The 2026 NIH report concerns a specific rapid-object-detection speed-training regimen and an association with a 25% lower rate of dementia diagnosis over long follow-up. It is not a riddle study. The crossword trial involved people with MCI and lasted 78 weeks; it was not a dementia-prevention trial in healthy adults.

“Any brain game transfers to everyday thinking.”

The review and the 2010 Nature study point in the opposite direction: practice effects are clearest on trained tasks, while transfer to untrained or everyday abilities is difficult to demonstrate. A riddle can be worthwhile without producing far transfer.

“More difficult is always better.”

Difficulty is useful only when the clue remains interpretable and you can learn from the solution. An arbitrary or poorly written riddle may measure obscure cultural knowledge or the author’s preferred pun rather than reasoning.

When a puzzle is not a substitute for help

If you or someone close to you has persistent memory loss, confusion, trouble managing familiar tasks, language changes or a noticeable decline from a previous level of functioning, arrange a clinical assessment. A puzzle score cannot diagnose mild cognitive impairment, dementia, depression, sleep-related problems or medication effects. Continue prescribed care and discuss any cognitive concern with a qualified clinician rather than trying to solve it with more riddles.

Bottom line: enjoy riddles, describe their benefits honestly

Riddles are a legitimate way to practice the kinds of attention, language manipulation and flexible interpretation that their clues demand. They can be entertaining, motivating and socially useful. The evidence does not justify a stronger promise: no riddle-specific controlled study cited here quantifies a general cognitive benefit, and related brain-training research repeatedly separates improvement on practiced tasks from transfer to everyday cognition. Crossword findings in 107 adults with MCI and the separate NIH speed-training association are important context, but neither is evidence that ordinary riddles prevent dementia or make healthy adults broadly smarter.
