Recovery shoes can be worth wearing after a hike if they feel comfortable and supportive, but they are an optional comfort choice—not a proven way to speed recovery, prevent injury, or outperform other comfortable footwear. The evidence available does not establish a special recovery benefit after hiking.
What recovery shoes may—and may not—do
Some hikers find recovery sandals or slides more comfortable after hours on their feet. Brown University Health notes that people who stand or walk for long periods, including after extended hikes, may find them helpful for foot pain. That supports a possible comfort benefit for an individual; it does not show that the footwear repairs tissue or shortens recovery time.

There is no established clinical advantage for a particular recovery shoe, cushioning system, brand, or model. Choose based on how the footwear feels and fits rather than claims that it accelerates recovery. Brown University Health’s overview of recovery sandals also says they may be fine after a workout or a long day, but may not be the best choice for everyday footwear.

How to choose what to wear after a hike
Compare recovery sandals or slides with other comfortable footwear using the conditions that matter to you:
#1 Best Overall
- ✓ Premium Wool-Knit Upper - Soft, breathable, and seamless—gently adapts to sensitive or swollen feet without rubbing or irritation.
- ✓ Wide Toe Box - Gives your toes room to relax and spread naturally, helping reduce pressure from bunions and tight footwear.
- ✓ Zero-Drop Sole - Keeps your heels and toes level to support proper alignment and reduce strain on the feet, knees, and lower back.
- ✓ Non-Slip Outsole - Provides stable footing on indoor surfaces and light outdoor paths—so you move with confidence, not caution.
- ✓ Lightweight, Flexible Build - Moves with your feet instead of against them, making Comforto Max ideal for recovery days, travel, and everyday wear.
- Comfort: Pick the option that feels good on your feet after the hike; there is no proven best recovery shoe.
- Fit and security: Choose a fit that feels tolerable and secure for the place you will be wearing it.
- Duration and setting: A shoe that feels pleasant for relaxing after a hike is not necessarily suitable for all-day wear.
- Terrain: If you are still walking on uneven ground, use footwear suited to that terrain rather than assuming a recovery slide is a substitute for a stable walking shoe or boot.
The Royal College of Podiatry says uneven trails, grasslands, and hills may call for a stiffer, more structured walking shoe or boot. That is guidance for choosing footwear for the walk itself, not evidence that recovery sandals have a particular effect afterward. See the Royal College of Podiatry’s footwear guidance.
What the evidence does not establish
Research on hiking footwear is not the same as research on recovery shoes worn after hiking. A September 2026 scoping review in the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research found 16 eligible studies on off-road footwear; 13 (81%) focused on trail running. The review describes small samples and underrepresentation of women in many controlled trials, and calls for longitudinal research. Those figures count studies in a broad footwear review—not recovery-sandal trials or evidence of faster post-hike recovery. Read the scoping review on PubMed.

Cushioning should not be treated as an ankle-sprain prevention strategy. A 2018 guideline reported no difference in preventive effect between high- and low-cut shoes across three randomized trials involving 3,410 participants, and concluded that footwear evidence for prevention was inconclusive. Its authors state, “Due to the inconclusiveness of evidence, no recommendations can be made concerning shoe wear (level 1).” This finding does not test recovery sandals after hiking. Read the ankle-sprain guideline.
When foot pain needs more than a shoe change
Changing shoes may make a person more comfortable, but it cannot rule out an injury. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons warns that hiking injuries—including sprains, fractures, and stress fractures—can be mistaken at first for overuse problems. Do not assume severe, worsening, persistent, or otherwise concerning pain is routine soreness or keep walking simply by switching footwear; seek clinical assessment when symptoms warrant it.

In an article about complex hiking injuries, the ACFAS attributes this caution to Dr. James W. Catalano: “It is critical that hikers know the signs and continually monitor for complex injuries, as not seeking treatment may result in additional damage that can lead to longer, more involved treatments and recovery periods.” Read the ACFAS hiking safety guidance.
