The important exception is Store content: downloadable content, add-ons, and in-game currency must match both the disc’s licensed country or region and your PlayStation account’s country or region. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read physical discs, and Blu-ray or DVD region codes are a separate issue from game compatibility.
The short answer: the game and its Store content follow different rules
Sony’s PS5 Ultimate FAQ, published in 2020, answers the headline question directly: “Are PS5 games region-locked? No.” That statement applies to the base PS5 game software. It means a game disc sold for one market is generally able to boot and play on a compatible PS5 console sold in another market.

The practical complication appears when you add content from the PlayStation Store. Sony Support says a game disc must be licensed for use in the same country or region as the account for Store content such as add-ons or in-game currency. A disc can therefore work perfectly for the main game while separately purchased content fails to recognize it.

- Store entitlement: Does the disc license match the country or region attached to the account buying the DLC, add-on, currency, or voucher? If not, compatibility is not assured.
This distinction explains most reports that an imported game “works” but its expansion or bonus items do not.
What “region” means on PS5
Region can refer to several different things, and they should not be treated as interchangeable.
Disc license region
Every physical game release carries a licensed country or region. Sony Support advises checking the small print on the front or back of the game box to identify it. This is the region used when determining whether Store content corresponds to the disc.

PlayStation account country or region
Your PlayStation account has a country or region selected when the account is created. Sony states that this setting cannot be changed afterward. It controls which country-specific Store you use and is the region that must align with a disc when you claim compatible add-ons or in-game currency.
Store catalog region
Digital games and downloadable products are delivered through the country-specific PlayStation Store linked to the account. Catalogs and services vary by country or region, so a title or add-on can be available in one Store and absent in another even though the underlying PS5 game is not region-locked.

Video-disc region codes
Blu-ray and DVD video media have their own geographic region-code rules in Sony’s PS5 instruction manual. Those rules apply to movies and other video discs, not to the explicit no-region-lock policy for PS5 games.
Can you play an imported PS5 game disc?
Usually, yes, provided the console has an optical drive. A physical PS5 game disc from another market is generally playable because Sony does not impose a region lock on PS5 games. The console still needs to be a disc-capable model; a PS5 Digital Edition has no optical drive and cannot read any physical game disc, regardless of where it was purchased.

The hardware question is simply whether the console can read the disc. The account question arises later, when you try to download an expansion, redeem a code, or buy in-game currency.
Why DLC can fail even when the disc works
Downloadable content is licensed through the Store and is associated with a specific release of the game. Sony’s support guidance requires the disc’s licensed country or region and the account’s country or region to be the same for Store content. A mismatch can produce symptoms such as an expansion not appearing in the game, an add-on showing as unavailable, or in-game currency failing to apply.
Typical mismatch scenario
Suppose you buy a physical game licensed for Country A but use an account created for Country B. The base disc may start and play normally. If you then purchase the expansion from Country B’s Store, the Store transaction can complete while the game does not recognize the content because the disc and account licenses do not match.

How to avoid the problem
- Identify the disc’s licensed country or region from the small print on the game box before buying any add-on.
- Check the country or region saved on the PlayStation account that will purchase the content.
- Use a Store and account whose country or region matches the disc license.
- Do not assume that an add-on with the same title is interchangeable between regional releases.
The same caution applies to in-game currency. Currency purchased from an account in a different region from the disc may not be usable with that physical release.
Voucher codes have their own region requirement
Voucher codes must match the country or region of the account that redeems them. An imported game voucher supplied in a box, promotion, or bundle may therefore be unusable on your existing account even when the game disc itself plays.
Check the voucher’s stated country or region before opening or purchasing it. Because the account country or region cannot be changed after creation, redeeming a code is not a matter of switching your existing profile temporarily. A code intended for a different account region needs an account that matches its license, subject to Sony’s account and Store rules.
Can you change your PlayStation account region?
No. Sony’s support information says the country or region selected for a PlayStation account cannot be changed after the account is created. This makes the region decision important before buying digital products or importing physical games with planned DLC.
When checking an existing account, open Account Management, choose Your Information, and inspect Country/Region. Record that value before ordering an imported disc or voucher. If the account does not match the disc license, plan on the possibility that related Store content will not work rather than assuming the mismatch can be corrected later.

Digital PS5 games are tied to the regional Store
A digital PS5 purchase does not involve a physical disc license. It is delivered through the country-specific PlayStation Store associated with the account. That means availability, pricing, services, and the catalog can differ by country or region.
This is a Store-availability issue, not evidence that the PS5 game software itself has a region lock. A title can be absent from one country’s catalog while remaining playable without geographic restriction when obtained as a physical PS5 game. Digital add-ons follow the same account and Store context in which they are sold, so buyers should verify that the desired content is offered in their account’s Store.
Imported disc versus local edition
Use the following comparison before deciding between an imported physical copy and a release sold in your own market.

The first four rows are the region checks Sony documents. Language, censorship, and publisher-specific content cannot be inferred from the fact that the base game is region-free; confirm them for the particular title.
A pre-purchase checklist for an imported PS5 game disc
- Confirm the hardware. Check that your console is a PS5 model with an optical drive. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read a physical disc.
- Read the package license. Inspect the small print on the front or back of the game box and note the licensed country or region.
- Inspect your account. In Account Management, open Your Information and check Country/Region.
- Decide whether you need Store content. If you only need the base game, the no-region-lock policy addresses the main compatibility question. If you want expansions, add-ons, or currency, continue with the region check.
- Match the regions. Plan to buy DLC and other Store content from an account whose country or region matches the disc license.
- Check every voucher. Verify the voucher’s country or region before purchase or redemption; the code must match the account.
- Verify title-specific details. For language options, censorship, or publisher-specific content, consult the game’s own listing rather than assuming all editions are identical.
Troubleshooting an imported disc or add-on
The disc is not recognized
First verify that the console has an optical drive. If it is a PS5 Digital Edition, no physical game disc can be used. On a disc-capable model, recheck that you purchased a PS5 game disc and that it is undamaged. The region policy does not remove the basic hardware requirement.

The base game starts but DLC is missing
Treat this as a region-matching problem before treating it as a defective disc. Compare the disc’s licensed country or region on the box with the account’s Country/Region under Account Management and Your Information. Sony’s guidance requires those values to match for add-ons and in-game currency. If they differ, content bought from the account’s Store may not correspond to that disc release.
A voucher will not redeem
Check the voucher’s stated country or region against the account used for redemption. Vouchers are region-specific to the account, and the account’s country or region cannot be edited after creation. An imported code can therefore be valid but unusable on the account you normally use.
The game or add-on is absent from the Store
Store catalogs vary by country or region. Confirm that you are looking in the Store associated with the account and that the publisher offers the product there. A listing’s absence does not prove that the physical game is region-locked.

PS5 Blu-rays and DVDs are a separate question
If your concern is movie playback rather than games, use the region information in Sony’s PS5 instruction manual. Blu-ray and DVD video discs can carry geographic region codes, and those codes govern whether the console can play the movie disc. They do not contradict Sony’s statement that PS5 games are not region-locked.
Therefore, an imported game-and-movie bundle can have two independent outcomes: the PS5 game may run, while the accompanying video disc may be restricted by its Blu-ray or DVD code. Check the media type and its code separately before buying.
What to remember when buying across regions
The safest way to evaluate an imported PS5 game disc is to identify which part of the purchase you care about. For the base game on a disc-capable console, Sony’s policy is straightforward: PS5 games are not region-locked. For everything delivered by the Store—DLC, add-ons, in-game currency, and voucher redemption—the disc license and account country or region matter. For digital purchases, the account’s country-specific Store determines what is available. For movies, Blu-ray and DVD codes apply instead.
Checking the box license and your account’s Country/Region before paying takes less time than resolving a mismatch afterward. It also prevents the common mistake of treating a playable imported disc as proof that every related download will be compatible.
