Are Prime Day Deals Actually Good? How to Check a Sale Price

Some Prime Day offers are genuinely competitive, but the event badge and discount percentage alone do not prove a deal is good. Check the exact item’s price history, compare the same model at other retailers, and calculate the full checkout total—including delivery, taxes and required add-ons. Buy only if the price meets a target you would have set without a countdown.

Are Amazon Prime Day deals any good?

It depends on the item. Which? tracked 32 high-profile offers on Amazon UK during the June 2026 event and examined prices over the preceding six months. Nearly two-thirds had not been cheaper in that period, while about one-third had been cheaper at some point. That sample shows that offers vary; it does not predict whether any particular listing—or deals in other countries—will be a bargain. Which?’s analysis also found that 19% of the products had not been sold at their stated RRP or Was Price, or higher, on Amazon UK during those six months.

A discount label compares an offer with a reference price; it does not establish whether the current price is competitive. Use the label as a starting point, then check the product’s own pricing and the cost of the same item elsewhere.

How to check whether a Prime Day price is good

  1. Match the exact product. Confirm model number, generation, size, storage, color, bundle contents, seller and condition. A different configuration is not a like-for-like comparison. The FTC’s online shopping guidance recommends checking identifying details such as the manufacturer or model number, size and color.
  2. Check its price history. On eligible Amazon product pages, look for the Price history link or use Alexa for Shopping, then select the longest available view. Amazon says the tool offers 30-, 90- and 365-day views, though availability and rollout vary by country and product. A prior low is useful context, not a promise the price will return. Amazon explains its price-history feature; check the current product page for what is available to you.
  3. Compare other sellers. Search the exact model at reputable retailers and compare the same condition and bundle. Which? points readers to CamelCamelCamel for Amazon price history and PriceRunner for wider comparisons.
  4. Calculate the checkout total. Include delivery, handling, taxes and mandatory fees. Check whether the advertised price depends on buying another product or meeting another condition. The FTC advises shoppers to account for shipping and other costs when comparing prices.
  5. Check the seller, condition and terms. Read the full description, confirm whether the item is new, refurbished, vintage or close-out, review seller details and inspect return terms. Sale items may have different return policies. The FTC also cautions that a very low price on branded goods can be a reason to check whether the item might be counterfeit or stolen.
  6. Compare with your own target. If the full price is not low enough for you, wait or skip it. A deadline does not make a purchase valuable, especially if the item was not something you wanted before the sale.

What Amazon’s reference prices mean

Amazon says its savings calculations use validated reference prices such as List Price or Typical Price. In Amazon’s explanation of savings and reference prices, List Price (also called MSRP) is described as a price submitted by independent sellers, manufacturers or suppliers and validated by Amazon. Typical or “Was” Price is described as the median price paid on Amazon in the previous 90 days, excluding prices paid during limited-time deals. Amazon also says it works to offer deals at the lowest price in at least the previous 30 days.

  • Dual Pricing Display: Clear LED display shows both cash and credit card prices simultaneously for transparent pricing communication
  • Quick Price Updates: Numeric keypad allows for fast and efficient price adjustments to keep your pricing current

These definitions explain Amazon’s stated method; they are not an independent audit of every listing. In Which?’s June 2026 sample, products that had reached the higher RRP or Was Price had been at that price for an average of only a third of the six-month period. The products were at or above their non-member price for an average of 48% of that period. Those figures describe that Amazon UK sample, not every listing or event.

How to read conflicting price claims

Amazon told Which? that all 32 products it investigated were cheaper during Prime Day than in the preceding 30 days. Which? found that around one-third had been cheaper at some point in the preceding six months. These statements use different comparison windows: an offer can beat its recent 30-day price and still have been cheaper earlier in a longer period.

What to keep in mind about availability and timing

Amazon’s price-history feature is described as available in the US, UK, Canada and India; at publication, Amazon said 365-day insights were rolling out in the US, UK and India. Feature availability can change, so use the history shown on your own product page. Prime Day dates and membership conditions also vary by market and year: Amazon announced that its US 2026 event ran June 23–26 and was exclusive to Prime members. Amazon’s US 2026 announcement applies to that event, not to other markets or years.
