Open-ear earbuds can be good for calls in quiet or moderately busy places, but they are not a dependable solution for loud environments. Their microphones may isolate your voice for the person on the other end, while their open design lets traffic, coworkers, passengers, wind and machinery remain audible to you. That trade-off makes them useful for awareness and comfort, not for making a noisy location quiet.
If your priority is hearing a conversation clearly in a café, station or street, compare sealed earbuds with active noise cancellation. If your priority is staying alert to surroundings while taking occasional calls, an open-ear model can be a sensible compromise—provided its microphone has been tested in conditions like yours.

“Good for calls” means two different things
Call quality has an outgoing side and an incoming side. The outgoing side is what the other person hears from the earbud microphones. The incoming side is whether you can understand that person over everything happening around you. Open-ear earbuds can perform well on one side and poorly on the other.

What the caller hears
Beamforming microphones and software noise processing can focus on your voice and reduce some background sound before it is transmitted. A microphone can therefore make your speech intelligible even though the earbuds themselves do not block the environment. Independent tests of some models show satisfactory voice separation in moderately busy settings, but results vary substantially with the model, microphone placement and type of noise.

What you hear
The speaker sits near, rather than inside or sealing, the ear canal. Outside sound reaches you directly, so a conversation can be masked by a loud espresso machine, road traffic, a train announcement or people talking nearby. Increasing call volume may make speech easier to follow, but it does not remove the competing sound and can reduce comfort or hearing safety. This is the fundamental limit of the category, not a setting that a phone app can eliminate.
Why noisy places are difficult for an open design
Open-ear earbuds intentionally provide little acoustic isolation. RTINGS describes almost no attenuation of outside frequencies for the Shokz OpenFit Air, and almost zero noise isolation for the Bose Ultra Open. Bose’s own product FAQ says the Ultra Open earbuds “don’t block out the world or have noise cancellation.” Shokz similarly explains that its OpenFit Pro, OpenFit Air and OpenFit 2+ do not isolate you like sealed earbuds because awareness is the purpose of the design.
That can be an advantage when you are walking, cycling where permitted, working near coworkers or waiting for announcements. It becomes a disadvantage when the environment is louder than the call. Open-ear earbuds do not create a quiet bubble; they add call audio to the same sound field you are already hearing.

Wind is its own problem
Wind noise is not the same as a steady background hum. Air moving across a microphone can produce bursts and low-frequency rumble that overwhelm speech-processing algorithms. It can also make the earbud shift slightly, changing the microphone’s angle. A manufacturer’s claim about background-noise reduction in a simulated test should not be treated as a promise of clear speech during a run or in gusty weather.
What current model evidence shows
Available tests illustrate why there is no universal “open-ear call quality” rating. Keep the results below separate: they come from different products, generations and conditions, and they are not a single head-to-head laboratory comparison.
| Model | Evidence about your voice | What reaches the wearer | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shokz OpenFit Pro | Shokz lists three microphones, AI voice processing and wind control. | Open design; no claim of sealed-style isolation. | Shokz reports up to 99.4% background-noise reduction in internal laboratory simulations. It says real-world performance can vary, and the available sources do not provide an independent comparative call test. |
| Shokz OpenFit 2+ | Shokz lists four beamforming microphones and AI noise processing. TechRadar describes calls as clear in suitable conditions. | Ambient sound remains audible by design. | TechRadar notes that clarity can suffer on windy days or while running; the evidence does not support calling it universally reliable in noise. |
| Shokz OpenFit Air | RTINGS found the microphone voice intelligible and satisfactorily separated from background sound in a moderately busy environment. | RTINGS found almost no attenuation of outside frequencies. | Shokz comparison information reports up to 96.5% environmental-noise filtering in lab testing. That figure does not establish intelligibility in every real-world environment. |
| Bose Ultra Open Earbuds | RTINGS describes microphone performance as decent. | Bose says the earbuds have no noise cancellation and leave you open to the world. | Do not use the original product’s result as evidence for the second generation. |
| Bose Ultra Open Earbuds 2nd Gen | SoundGuys’ October 2026 review found clear speech in ideal conditions. | Street and office processing muffled speech, and the windy sample was the weakest. | This is a model- and condition-specific review, not proof that every open-ear product performs the same way. |
The percentages in the Shokz rows are manufacturer-reported laboratory claims, not independently replicated comparative results. “Up to” describes a best-case figure from the company’s testing method; it is not a guaranteed reduction for your street, office or gym.

How different environments affect calls
Quiet room or home office
Open-ear earbuds are most likely to feel successful here. The microphone has less competing sound to suppress, and you can hear the caller without needing strong isolation. They are convenient when you need to remain aware of a doorbell, a colleague or a child. Check for leakage if other people are nearby: open speakers can make your call audible to them.
Moderately busy café or shared office
This is the boundary case. A model with effective beamforming may keep your voice understandable, as RTINGS found with the OpenFit Air in a moderately busy setting. You, however, still hear conversations and equipment. Sit away from the loudest source, lower competing playback and use the phone’s call controls to mute when you are not speaking.
Street, station or public transport
Open earbuds preserve awareness of vehicles and announcements, but that same traffic or public-address noise competes with the incoming call. The caller may understand you better than you understand them. For an important conversation, move to a quieter area or switch to sealed earbuds with noise cancellation.

Wind, running and cycling
Movement combines wind hitting the microphones with possible fit changes. OpenFit 2+ coverage specifically warns that call clarity can suffer in wind or while running, and SoundGuys reported the poorest result from its windy Ultra Open 2nd Gen sample. Wind-control branding is worth noting, but only a recording made in comparable conditions tells you how usable the call will be.
Machinery, construction or very loud venues
These are poor use cases for open-ear calls. The environment can mask the incoming voice, and sustained noise may also defeat microphone processing. Use hearing protection where appropriate and postpone the call or move to a quieter location rather than relying on an open earbud to overcome the sound.

How to evaluate an open-ear earbud before buying
Marketing terms such as “AI calls” or “clear voice” do not describe a standardized performance level. Use a repeatable check that separates microphone quality from your ability to hear.

- 28H Playtime : 7 hours single charge, 28 hours with case. IP55 waterproof protects against sweat and rain during outdoor running and gym sessions. Bluetooth 6.0 for ultra-stable connection.
- Identify your noisiest normal location. Choose the café, street, station, office or exercise route where you actually expect to call. A quiet-room demo cannot answer this question.
- Find independent recordings or reviews. Prioritize tests that let you hear quiet, office, street and windy samples. Confirm the exact model and generation; results from one product should not be transferred to another.
- Test the outgoing signal. Record a voice memo or make a call while standing at your intended distance from traffic or other noise. Ask the other person whether words remain distinct, not merely whether your voice is audible.
- Test the incoming signal. Have someone read a fixed passage while you remain in the same location. Note whether you miss consonants, names or numbers. This measures the isolation limitation that microphone tests cannot show.
- Repeat while moving. Walk, turn your head and create the airflow you normally encounter. Check whether wind bursts, clothing or a loose fit create interruptions.
- Check controls and device behavior. Verify that mute, answer, end-call and volume controls work from the earbud and that switching between phone and computer is practical. If you use two devices, confirm multipoint behavior rather than assuming it.
- Assess fit for the whole call. Ear-hook and clip-on designs distribute weight differently. A stable fit prevents microphone-angle changes, but comfort depends on your ears and glasses. Wear the earbuds for a full meeting, not just a few minutes.
- Check battery and support details. Compare the manufacturer’s stated battery method and call-time conditions, firmware support and return policy. The sources reviewed here do not establish one comparable battery-life figure or a durable current price for every model, and retail prices vary by region and date.
Open-ear versus sealed noise-cancelling earbuds
| Priority | Open-ear choice | Sealed earbuds with noise cancellation |
|---|---|---|
| Stay aware of vehicles, people and announcements | Strong advantage; environmental sound remains present. | Requires transparency or awareness mode, which still may not sound as natural as an open fit. |
| Hear a caller over traffic or machinery | Weak point because outside sound reaches the ear directly. | Usually the better starting point because isolation reduces masking. |
| Make your voice understandable in moderate noise | Can be good when beamforming and processing are effective; verify with independent samples. | Often capable, but performance still depends on microphones, wind handling and fit. |
| Comfort and pressure sensitivity | No sealed canal pressure; comfort varies with hook or clip shape. | Creates a seal that some users dislike, though it can improve bass and isolation. |
| Windy exercise | Potentially vulnerable to microphone and fit problems; test specifically. | Can also capture wind, but the seal may make incoming speech easier to follow. |
Choose based on the failure you can tolerate. If missing part of the caller’s sentence is unacceptable, isolation matters more than awareness and a sealed, noise-cancelling design is the safer category to investigate. If hearing your surroundings is non-negotiable and calls are occasional, open-ear earbuds may be the more practical compromise.
Troubleshooting common call problems
The caller says you sound distant or muffled
- Move the microphone away from hair, a hat or a collar and reseat the earbud.
- Face away from the wind and stop briefly to separate wind noise from steady background noise.
- Use the phone’s mute control when you are listening; intermittent noise can be less distracting than transmitting continuously.
- Compare the earbud with the phone’s built-in microphone in the same location. If both fail, the environment—not only the earbud—is the limiting factor.
You can hear the caller only when the volume is uncomfortable
- Move away from the dominant noise source instead of continuing to raise volume.
- Try the call from a doorway, side street or quieter carriage area.
- For repeated loud-location calls, switch to a sealed noise-cancelling model rather than treating volume as isolation.
Speech breaks up when you walk or run
- Check that the ear-hook or clip is stable and that both sides sit at the manufacturer’s intended angle.
- Repeat the test without wind. If the problem disappears indoors, wind control—not Bluetooth range—is the likely issue.
- Update firmware and phone software, then test again with the phone in its normal carrying position.
Bottom line: who should buy open-ear earbuds for calls?
Open-ear earbuds are a good call tool for quiet rooms and many moderately busy settings when awareness, comfort and freedom from an ear-canal seal matter. Their microphones can deliver intelligible speech, but performance differs by model and wind or movement can expose weaknesses.
They are not good at making noisy places quiet for the wearer. Traffic, office chatter, announcements and machinery remain audible, so hearing the other person is the decisive limitation. Treat Shokz’s 99.4% and 96.5% figures as company laboratory claims, not guarantees, and seek independent recordings from the exact model and generation you are considering. For consistently clear conversations in loud environments, start with sealed earbuds that provide effective noise cancellation; for situational awareness with occasional calls, open-ear earbuds can be the right compromise.
