1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIn the United States, an online-only bank is not inherently less safe than a branch-based bank for deposit insurance. What matters is whether the institution holding your money is FDIC-insured, whether your account is an insured deposit, and how your balances fit the coverage rules. A branch can make some services easier to access, but it does not by itself make deposits safer. Before switching, verify the bank and account, review the terms and support options, and move payments in stages.
What “safer” means for a bank account
Safety is not one thing. It can mean protection if a bank fails, protection against unauthorized access or scams, or reliable access to your money when you need it. Those risks have different safeguards. FDIC deposit insurance addresses the failure of an insured bank; it does not guarantee that every transaction will be trouble-free or that an account will always be accessible.

The FDIC says covered deposits are insured whether the insured bank operates online or through branches. That establishes equal treatment for qualifying deposits under the insurance rules, not that online and branch-based banks have identical cybersecurity, customer service, fraud handling, or operational resilience. Official guidance reviewed for this article provides no comparative incident rate or overall safety ranking for the two formats. The FDIC’s digital banking guidance explains that online banking may suit some customers, while the available services and access differ by institution.

How FDIC deposit insurance applies
The standard limit is based on depositor, bank, and ownership category
The standard FDIC limit is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per account ownership category. It is not automatically $250,000 for every account number. When one person has multiple accounts in the same ownership category at the same insured bank, the balances may be combined when coverage is calculated. Different ownership categories can qualify for separate coverage under the applicable rules. The FDIC’s explanation of deposit insurance describes the limit and the categories used in determining coverage.
If your balances are close to or above the limit, do not assume that splitting money across account numbers at the same bank creates additional coverage. Ownership, beneficiaries, co-owners, trust arrangements, business accounts, and intermediary arrangements can affect a calculation. Use the FDIC’s Electronic Deposit Insurance Estimator (EDIE) or contact the FDIC for help with a specific situation. The right answer depends on your account details.
Insurance covers eligible deposits, not every product in a banking app
FDIC insurance protects qualifying deposits if an FDIC-insured bank fails. It does not cover non-deposit investments such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or crypto assets, even if they appear in an app or are offered through a bank-related service. Nor should it be treated as insurance for safe-deposit box contents or as a blanket guarantee against fraud or transfer errors. Check the product’s legal description and disclosures rather than relying on the app’s name or the place where it is displayed. The FDIC’s insurance explanation distinguishes insured deposits from products that are not covered.

Credit unions use a different insurance system
If the institution you are considering is a credit union, do not describe its coverage as FDIC insurance. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau directs consumers to the National Credit Union Administration’s insurance system and lookup tool for checking credit union coverage. Verify the institution and the applicable coverage through that system rather than assuming that bank-insurance rules apply.
Verify the institution behind the account
Check the bank, not just the brand or website
Before entering personal information or transferring money, search for the institution in the FDIC’s BankFind database. Confirm that the legal bank name and details match the account’s disclosures. Use a web address you have independently verified: scammers can imitate a bank’s website or misuse FDIC terminology and logos. The FDIC’s guidance on scammers and fake banks explains why an insurance claim on a page or in a message should not be accepted at face value.
Then confirm that the specific product is a deposit account held at that insured bank. A bank may offer or make available products that are not deposits, and a financial brand can provide services without itself being a bank. A logo, an app-store listing, or the phrase “banking services” is not enough to establish which entity holds the funds.

Ask how a fintech or third-party app holds funds
A nonbank app or fintech company is not itself FDIC-insured. If it says that customer funds are placed at a partner bank, identify that bank and read the provider’s agreement and disclosures. Find out when funds reach the bank, how they are credited, what records identify your interest, and how the arrangement handles access or service interruptions. Do not assume that an app balance is directly insured in the same way as an account opened with a bank; coverage depends on the actual bank, deposit, and account structure.
Verify the named partner bank independently in BankFind, and ask the provider to explain the arrangement in terms you can confirm in its documents. The FDIC’s guidance on banking through third-party apps and its consumer information about banking apps explain the distinction between an app provider and the insured bank.
Compare the account you will actually use
Once the institution and account type are clear, compare the written terms against your everyday needs. A high advertised rate or a convenient app does not tell you whether the account works for your payment habits, whether the rate is conditional, or what support is available when something goes wrong.

| What to compare | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Fees and balance rules | Monthly maintenance, overdraft, ATM, wire, and other transaction fees; minimum balance requirements; conditions to waive charges. | A fee that is small on paper can outweigh an advertised benefit if your routine triggers it often. |
| Interest and promotions | The stated rate, minimum balance, eligibility conditions, and when any promotional rate expires. | Compare the ongoing terms, not only a short-lived offer. The FDIC cautions against letting a promotional offer alone decide a move. |
| Cash and ATM access | Whether cash deposits are accepted, which ATMs are available, what charges apply, and whether ATM access has limits. | Some online-only institutions may not accept cash deposits or offer in-person teller service; arrangements vary by institution. |
| Payments and transfers | Check-deposit rules, transfer timing, bill pay, payment limits, and how pending transactions are handled. | These details affect whether the account can support your regular income and bills without a gap. |
| Service and problem resolution | Support channels and hours, access to in-person assistance if relevant, and current procedures for errors, fraud reports, and account-access issues. | Do not infer how disputes are handled from an institution’s online or branch-based label; check its current procedures. |
| Agreements and protections | The deposit agreement, fee schedule, product disclosures, overdraft terms, and any fintech-partner agreement. | The contract and disclosures govern details that a summary page or promotional message may omit. |
The FDIC recommends weighing a prospective account’s costs and benefits rather than choosing solely for a temporary offer; it also advises customers considering a move to talk with both institutions. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency advises consumers to review account agreements and ask questions about terms such as overdraft protection. Read the FDIC switching guidance and the OCC’s depository services guidance when comparing specific terms.

Deposit insurance and cybersecurity address different problems. The bank’s operating format does not, by itself, establish how well it will prevent or resolve a cyber incident. You can still reduce risks associated with your devices, connection, and responses to unexpected contact:

- Use a strong, unique password for banking and keep your device’s protective software updated.
- Use a trusted, secure internet connection when signing in; avoid entering credentials through links in unexpected texts, emails, or calls.
- Navigate to the bank’s verified website or use its official app rather than a link sent by someone claiming to be the bank.
- Do not disclose sign-in credentials or verification codes in response to unsolicited contact. If a message raises concern, contact the institution through a channel you independently verified.
The FDIC’s cybersecurity guide for financial institution customers recommends protective habits such as strong credentials, updated protective software, and a trusted connection. Its fake-bank guidance is relevant when checking claims or websites. These practices help protect your side of account access; they do not prove one category of bank is more secure than another.

Switch accounts without interrupting deposits or bills
Do not close the old account as soon as the new account is approved. A staged move gives you time to confirm that the new account works and that pending transactions do not leave the old one short of funds.
- Open the new account and confirm access. Complete the institution’s identity and account-verification steps. Check that you can sign in, see the correct account details, and understand how to contact support before moving your primary income or balance.
- List incoming deposits and recurring payments. Identify your direct deposit, automatic withdrawals, subscriptions, bill payments, and any checks or card transactions still in flight. Note which payments are initiated by a biller and which are scheduled through the old bank’s bill-pay service.
- Redirect income and payments deliberately. Update direct deposit instructions with the payer and move recurring withdrawals to the new account. If you use bank bill pay, the FDIC advises canceling the old-bank bill payments and enrolling them through the new bank. Check each payee’s instructions rather than assuming the new account will inherit old schedules.
- Ask both institutions about timing and possible fees. Confirm how long transfers and payment changes may take, whether there are account-closing charges or other consequences, and how each bank handles pending activity. The FDIC recommends speaking with customer-service representatives at both institutions to avoid unnecessary fees or hassles.
- Leave a buffer in the old account while activity clears. Keep enough money there for unsettled card transactions, checks, automatic debits, and any remaining scheduled payments. Do not transfer the full balance until you have accounted for those obligations.
- Confirm the new setup before closing the old account. Check that deposits arrive in the new account and recurring bills are paid as intended. Once pending items have cleared and no further payment relies on the old account, confirm the closure process with the old institution.
The FDIC’s guide to moving to another bank, last updated March 1, 2024, recommends comparing benefits and costs, planning bill-pay changes, and contacting both institutions. Its practical warning is worth keeping in view: “Do not let short-term promotional offers be the only factor in your decision making.”
Use a like-for-like decision, not a format ranking
Compare the actual institutions and accounts on the factors that can change your outcome: insured status and legal institution; account type and how coverage applies; fees and ongoing rates; cash, ATM, and branch access; support channels; digital features and transfer logistics; and, where relevant, the terms of a fintech-bank relationship. Confirm current bank-specific details directly, since fees, rates, account terms, and partner arrangements can change.
