Micro-influencer partnerships can be worth testing, but smaller creators are not automatically cheaper or more effective. The strongest comparative evidence cited here is specifically about nano-influencers: in one European direct-to-consumer (DTC) setting, they produced a higher return on influencer spend than macro-influencers, while macro-influencers still generated more revenue. For a small brand, the useful lesson is to run a measured pilot that counts audience fit, total costs, coordination, and attributable outcomes—not to assume a particular return.
What counts as a micro-influencer—and what the evidence actually compares
Influencer-size labels are not fixed, and the cited study summary does not give a definitive follower-count threshold for “micro-influencer.” It is therefore important not to treat micro- and nano-influencers as interchangeable. The comparative figures below concern nano- versus macro-influencers, not every creator who might be described as a micro-influencer.
The American Marketing Association’s 2024 summary of the Journal of Marketing paper “Revenue Generation Through Influencer Marketing” describes data from a European DTC firm and three paid-influencer field studies. The firm’s sales data covered nearly 1.9 million sold products and over €17 million in revenue; linked sales used influencer-specific Instagram discount codes. Across three field studies, the summary reports 319 paid nano- and macro-influencers. It also says findings were confirmed on YouTube and TikTok. These are findings from the described research setting, not a market-wide benchmark or forecast for an individual campaign. Read the AMA summary.
Do micro-influencers have better ROI than big influencers?
In the DTC setting reported by the AMA, return on influencer spend (ROIS) was more than three times higher for nano-influencers than for macro-influencers. At the same time, macro-influencers generated six times the revenue and had associated costs 18 times higher. The results show why “better ROI” and “more total sales” are different questions: a creator can generate less revenue but more return relative to spend.

| Comparison reported by the AMA summary | Finding in the study setting |
|---|---|
| Return on influencer spend | Nano-influencers: more than three times higher than macro-influencers |
| Revenue | Macro-influencers: six times higher than nano-influencers |
| Associated costs | Macro-influencers: 18 times higher than nano-influencers |
These ratios do not establish that any micro- or nano-influencer will outperform a larger creator. Results can vary with geography, category, platform, offer, audience, and measurement method. The study summary examined several points in the funnel—including followers, reach, engagement, and revenue—which is a useful reminder that follower count alone cannot settle the decision.
Are micro-influencers worth it for a small business?
They may be, if their audience is relevant and the full cost of the partnership fits the business objective. A smaller creator can be a sensible test when a brand wants a focused audience, a defined geographic market, or content assets as well as direct sales. A larger creator may still make sense when the goal is broader exposure or higher sales volume and the budget supports it.

Judge each candidate against the same practical factors:
- Audience relevance: Do the creator’s subject, followers, and audience geography match the people the brand needs to reach?
- Expected reach: Estimate how many relevant people are likely to see the content rather than relying on follower totals.
- Engagement quality: Consider whether interaction appears meaningful and relevant to the offer, not just how much activity a post attracts.
- Full campaign cost: Include fees, product or shipping costs, any rights or usage costs, and the staff time needed to manage the work.
- Outcome fit: Decide whether the campaign is meant to produce sales, qualified leads, awareness, or usable creator content before comparing results.
Working with many small creators can also mean managing more outreach, briefs, approvals, product shipments, disclosure checks, and reporting than a single larger partnership. The AMA summary notes that platforms can enable work with hundreds of low-followership influencers, but it does not identify a vendor or establish a particular brand’s savings. Treat any platform as an operational option to assess for fit and current cost—not as proof that coordination is free or effortless.

How to measure influencer marketing ROI
Start with a small, instrumented pilot. Define one primary objective and a measurement window before content goes live. Use a consistent comparison across creators so a high-revenue result is not mistaken for a high-return result, or vice versa.
- Set the objective and success measure. For sales, specify the revenue or contribution measure that matters; for lead generation, define what qualifies as a lead; for content, agree on what deliverables and usage rights are valuable.
- Record the baseline and expected audience. Note the audience relevance and geography, estimated reach, and engagement signals for each creator. Compare like with like where possible.
- Track the complete cost. Log fees, product and shipping expense, rights or usage charges, and internal coordination time. If you use a platform, include its current cost in the calculation.
- Use trackable links or codes where appropriate. Unique links or discount codes can help connect activity to orders; the European DTC data described by the AMA used influencer-specific Instagram discount codes.
- Report funnel outcomes separately. Review reach and engagement alongside leads or sales, revenue, and the cost of producing those outcomes. Keep the measure aligned with the objective rather than collapsing every result into one number.
- Review attribution limits before deciding. A code-linked purchase shows a trackable association, but it does not capture every influence on a customer or prove that the sale was incremental. Interpret it alongside the campaign’s purpose and other available evidence.
Do not apply the study’s reported ratios to a proposed campaign as though they were expected results. Use them as a reason to test the economics of smaller creators against a relevant alternative, with your own costs and audience in view.

How should influencers disclose gifted products or paid partnerships?
For U.S. campaigns, FTC guidance says an endorsement must reflect the endorser’s honest opinion, and an influencer cannot make claims that the marketer could not legally make. A relationship consumers would not reasonably expect—and that could affect how they evaluate the endorsement—should be disclosed clearly and conspicuously. That can include payment, a free or discounted product, or another thing of value.
FTC staff put responsibility plainly: “The big-picture point is that the ultimate responsibility for clearly and conspicuously disclosing a material connection rests with the influencer and the brand – not the platform.” The statement appears in the FTC staff FAQ, FTC’s Endorsement Guides: What People Are Asking. Read the FTC staff guidance.

Placement and presentation matter. A disclosure should be easy to notice and understand, close to the endorsement, and not buried in a profile, behind a “more” click, among hashtags, or only in comments. For video, the FTC’s Disclosures 101 for Social Media Influencers recommends putting the disclosure in the video itself, not only in its description; for live streams, repeat it periodically. Do not assume a platform’s built-in label alone is sufficient. The FTC brochure states: “As an influencer, it’s your responsibility to make these disclosures, to be familiar with the Endorsement Guides, and to comply with laws against deceptive ads.” Read the FTC influencer brochure.
The FTC’s 2023 Endorsement Guides revisions addressed clear-and-conspicuous disclosures, possible shortcomings of platform tools, review incentives, fake reviews, virtual influencers, tags, and potential liability for advertisers, endorsers, and intermediaries. See the FTC announcement. This is U.S.-specific guidance; campaigns in other jurisdictions may face additional requirements.
