Yes, you can wear Meta smart glasses in public, but wearing them is not the same as having permission to record everyone around you. The capture light has a defined role: Meta says it signals photos and videos captured for the wearer’s gallery. That does not establish that it signals every kind of AI processing. Laws and venue rules also vary, so treat recording, AI features, sharing, and simply wearing the glasses as separate questions.
What does the capture light tell people nearby?
Meta says the front-facing white LED blinks briefly when a photo is taken and stays lit throughout video recording for the wearer’s gallery. The company says the capture light has no off switch. Its description is specifically about gallery capture; it should not be read as proof that the glasses are not using another feature or processing information in another way.

That distinction matters because the Texas Attorney General’s June 2026 announcement raised concerns about an “always enabled” AI mode and said the indicator is not active during that mode. Those are claims and concerns stated by the Attorney General’s office as it announced an investigation—not an adjudicated finding or an independent explanation of how every model and software version works. Can the wearer hide or disable the light?
Meta says blocking the capture LED disables the camera. It says this safeguard begins with the second generation and that it is updating detection of physical tampering or destruction. Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance also says its features prohibit taking photos or video when the light is covered and that deliberately covering it while recording goes against its guidelines. These are the company’s stated safeguards and policies, not an independent guarantee for every device or feature. Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance.

Does the light mean the glasses are not using AI?
No such broad conclusion is established. Meta describes the light in connection with gallery photos and videos, while the Texas Attorney General has separately raised a concern about an AI mode whose indicator, the office says, is not active. The available information does not provide a comprehensive, independent account covering every feature, model, software version, and country. Check current in-app controls and documentation for your specific glasses and feature rather than assuming the light reports all AI activity.
Are photos and videos private?
Meta says photos and videos captured for the gallery remain on the glasses until the wearer imports them to a phone, and that the wearer decides whether to share them. This describes gallery handling; it is not a blanket statement about voice requests, AI features, or every possible processing path. Is it legal to record with smart glasses in public?
There is no single US-wide answer that covers every recording situation. Rules can depend on the state, whether you are making video or recording a conversation, and whether the setting is private or sensitive. An Associated Press report published October 1, 2026, said California Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill targeting secret recording with smart glasses. The report also noted existing restrictions on recording in spaces generally considered private and conversation-consent laws in about a dozen states. It is a short news report, not a complete survey of current law. Check the law where you are and the rules of the place you are visiting before recording. Associated Press report.

- Tell people when you intend to record them and ask first when feasible. Asking is considerate, but it does not necessarily satisfy every legal requirement.
- Avoid recording in bathrooms, changing areas, medical settings, and other places where people reasonably expect privacy.
- Follow venue rules, even when recording in a public area might otherwise be lawful.
- Before using an AI feature, review its current controls and feature-specific documentation; do not treat the capture light as a signal for every kind of processing.

Is it physically safe to wear them?
For product-specific health and safety information, Ray-Ban’s US FAQ directs owners to the Safety & Warranty Guide. It also says the glasses are not designed for submersion or extended exposure to liquids. That guidance does not amount to an independent assessment of long-term wear safety. Ray-Ban US FAQ.
