Usually, but not automatically. Several European luxury brands have higher long-term maintenance and repair costs than many mainstream brands, yet the badge is an unreliable price rule by itself. Lexus, Acura, Genesis, Buick and Lincoln are important counterexamples in published brand-level data. The meaningful comparison is between specific models with similar age, mileage, powertrain, warranty coverage and ownership period.

What the available evidence actually measures

There is no single statistic that defines a universal “luxury-car surcharge.” The main datasets measure different things, so their figures should not be blended into one ranking.

  • Consumer Reports’ 2025 Annual Auto Surveys asked owners what they paid out of pocket for maintenance and repairs during the previous 12 months. Maintenance includes routine items such as oil changes and tires. Its analysis presents cumulative costs for years one through five, years six through ten and the full ten-year period. It excludes collision repairs and does not model uncertainty from inflation or tariffs. These are owner-reported, brand-level results rather than controlled quotes for matched vehicles.
  • RepairPal’s reliability framework separates average repair cost, frequency of unscheduled shop visits and repair severity. Its rating covers 2010–2019 model-year vehicles and applies statistical-confidence controls. A high average bill does not automatically mean a vehicle is unreliable if serious failures and unscheduled visits are uncommon.
  • ConsumerAffairs’ July 21, 2026 article reproduces RepairPal-attributed annual brand averages. Those numbers are annual averages, not Consumer Reports’ ten-year cumulative survey results.

RepairPal-attributed annual averages

Porsche $1,192 RepairPal data reproduced by ConsumerAffairs in 2026
Land Rover $1,174 RepairPal data reproduced by ConsumerAffairs in 2026
Jaguar $1,123 RepairPal data reproduced by ConsumerAffairs in 2026
Audi $987 RepairPal data reproduced by ConsumerAffairs in 2026
BMW $968 RepairPal data reproduced by ConsumerAffairs in 2026
Buick $608 RepairPal data reproduced by ConsumerAffairs in 2026
Lexus $551 RepairPal data reproduced by ConsumerAffairs in 2026
Genesis $524 RepairPal data reproduced by ConsumerAffairs in 2026
Acura $501 RepairPal data reproduced by ConsumerAffairs in 2026
Hyundai $468 RepairPal data reproduced by ConsumerAffairs in 2026
Toyota $441 RepairPal data reproduced by ConsumerAffairs in 2026
Honda $428 RepairPal data reproduced by ConsumerAffairs in 2026

The spread illustrates a tendency, not a guaranteed outcome for every trim or model year. For example, Acura, Genesis and Lexus average less than several European luxury brands in this dataset, while Buick is lower than many mainstream and luxury-nameplate averages. A particular compact luxury sedan can therefore cost less to keep running than a large mainstream SUV.

Why some luxury models produce higher bills

More expensive parts and labor

Luxury vehicles often use proprietary components, larger brakes, adaptive suspension parts, advanced lighting and more powerful drivetrains. When one of those parts needs replacement, the component price can be higher than a functionally similar mainstream part. Labor can also cost more when a repair requires brand-specific diagnostic equipment or a technician with specialized training.

Complexity creates more potential repair points

Features such as electronically controlled dampers, air suspension, all-wheel-drive systems, turbocharging, extensive driver-assistance sensors and tightly integrated infotainment add hardware and software that must be diagnosed. Complexity does not mean a failure is inevitable; it means a failure can take longer to isolate and may involve a costlier module.

Performance hardware can wear differently

High-output engines, low-profile tires, large wheels and performance brake systems can consume wear items faster when the vehicle is driven aggressively or on poor roads. Tire and brake replacement is maintenance-related spending even when the vehicle never suffers a major mechanical fault.

Parts availability and service location matter

A vehicle supported by many independent shops and a large parts supply may be cheaper to service than one requiring a dealer or a specialist. Local labor rates, shipping distance, climate, road conditions and driving habits can move a real owner’s bill far away from a national brand average.

Why the badge is an imperfect predictor

Luxury brands do not share one engineering or cost strategy

The RepairPal-derived figures show a wide gap among luxury brands. Lexus averages $551 per year, Genesis $524 and Acura $501, compared with $1,192 for Porsche, $1,174 for Land Rover, $1,123 for Jaguar, $987 for Audi and $968 for BMW in the same ConsumerAffairs presentation. Those results do not prove that every model from the lower-cost group is inexpensive or that every model from the higher-cost group is problematic; they show why a badge-only rule is too broad.

Mainstream brands can also be expensive

Vehicle size, drivetrain and age can outweigh the market position of the brand. A mainstream three-row, turbocharged, four-wheel-drive vehicle may have more expensive tires, brakes and suspension work than a small luxury sedan. A used vehicle with deferred maintenance can also create a large first-year bill regardless of its original price class.

Consumer Reports found domestic exceptions

Consumer Reports’ 2025 analysis placed Buick and Lincoln among the lowest-cost brands overall, including when compared with mainstream brands. The publication points to lower domestic parts costs as one explanation. Its survey also placed multiple European luxury brands near the expensive end, but with meaningful differences between brands.

How to compare two cars fairly before buying

Use the same assumptions for both vehicles. Changing the mileage, ownership period or definition of “maintenance” can make a comparison look precise while measuring different things.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Match the vehicles by use and specification. Compare similar body styles, engine outputs, drivetrain layouts, model years and equipment. A base front-wheel-drive sedan is not a fair benchmark for a high-performance all-wheel-drive SUV.
  2. Set one ownership horizon. Five years is useful for a newer purchase; ten years is more revealing when you intend to keep the car long after its warranty. Consumer Reports reports separate year-one-to-five and year-six-to-ten periods, so account for that changeover.
  3. Set one mileage assumption. Include annual distance, commuting conditions, towing, short trips and severe-weather use. Tires, brakes and fluid service are sensitive to mileage and driving conditions.
  4. Separate scheduled service from unscheduled repairs. List factory-specified services separately from failures or warning-light visits. This shows whether a model’s budget is driven by predictable upkeep or by unexpected faults.
  5. Check all three reliability dimensions. Compare average bill size, frequency of unscheduled visits and severity of repairs. A high-cost repair that is rare may be less disruptive than frequent smaller visits.
  6. Read the exact warranty and maintenance terms. Record the duration, mileage limit, exclusions, deductible, roadside coverage and any complimentary-maintenance period. Do not assume a brand-wide promise applies to every model year or market.
  7. Get local estimates. Ask a dealer and an independent specialist for prices on the next scheduled service, brake and tire replacement, a common battery or sensor repair, and a major scheduled interval. Local quotes are more useful for your budget than a national average alone.

Warranty timing can hide the real ownership curve

New owners may pay little out of pocket during warranty or complimentary-maintenance years. That does not mean the vehicle will remain equally inexpensive in years six through ten. Consumer Reports specifically notes that owner-paid costs often rise after those coverage periods expire.

Build a timeline rather than using a single annual number:

  • Years 1–3: identify what the warranty and included maintenance cover, and note exclusions such as tires, alignment, wear items or damage.
  • Years 4–5: budget for the first uncovered services and inspect whether scheduled intervals become more expensive.
  • Years 6–10: include age-related batteries, cooling-system parts, suspension components, seals, sensors and other repairs that may not appear in a new-car budget. The exact timing varies by model and use, so treat this as a planning category rather than a guaranteed list of failures.

Maintenance is only one part of total ownership cost

Do not use a whole-vehicle ownership estimate as if it were a maintenance comparison. AAA estimated the average cost to own and operate a new vehicle at $11,577 per year in 2025. Its 2025 study averaged five top-selling models in each of nine categories over five years and 75,000 miles. The figure includes depreciation, finance, fuel, insurance, taxes and fees as well as maintenance, repairs and tires.

AAA’s 2025 estimate for maintenance, repair and tires was 11.04 cents per mile. That measure included manufacturer-specified routine service, an extended warranty, wear-item repairs over five years and one set of replacement tires for the vehicles studied.

AAA’s 2026 release estimated $12,863 per year for owning and operating a new vehicle. It covered seven categories and 34 top-selling models over five years and 75,000 miles, and AAA changed its methodology. Because of that change, the 2026 overall total is not directly comparable with the 2025 total and neither figure establishes a luxury-versus-mainstream maintenance premium.

Measure Published figure Scope and limitation
AAA 2025 average ownership and operation $11,577 per year Includes depreciation, finance, fuel, insurance, taxes and fees, not just service
AAA 2025 maintenance, repair and tires 11.04 cents per mile Five-year/75,000-mile study; includes specified service, extended warranty, wear repairs and one tire set
AAA 2026 average ownership and operation $12,863 per year Methodology changed; do not compare directly with the 2025 total

A practical budgeting method for one specific car

When you have a vehicle candidate, make a five- or ten-year worksheet with one row for each year. Use the owner’s manual and warranty documents for scheduled work, then add local estimates for likely wear items and a reserve for unscheduled repairs.

  • Scheduled maintenance: oil and filter service, fluids, inspections, spark plugs, belts and other intervals listed for the exact engine and transmission.
  • Wear items: tires, brakes, batteries, wiper components and alignment work based on your mileage and road conditions.
  • Unscheduled repairs: use reliability information that reports both average cost and visit frequency; do not multiply a single severe repair by every year of ownership.
  • Coverage offsets: subtract only work genuinely covered by warranty or complimentary maintenance, and note expiration dates.
  • Local adjustment: replace national averages with quotes from shops you would actually use.

Present the result as a range rather than false precision. A low estimate can represent routine service only; a high estimate can include an expensive but plausible repair. Keep collision damage, fuel, insurance, financing and depreciation in separate sections so you do not mistake a maintenance budget for total cost of ownership.

Common mistakes that make luxury-car comparisons misleading

  • Comparing brands instead of models: brand averages combine small sedans, large SUVs, hybrids and performance cars.
  • Mixing time periods: an annual RepairPal average for 2010–2019 model years is not equivalent to a ten-year Consumer Reports owner-survey total.
  • Calling every repair “maintenance”: scheduled service, wear items and unexpected failures should be shown separately.
  • Ignoring the first owner’s coverage: a complimentary-maintenance plan can suppress early out-of-pocket spending without changing later costs.
  • Using repair cost as a reliability score: expensive parts and rare failures can coexist with relatively few shop visits.
  • Forgetting location: labor rates, parts availability, climate and service choices materially affect what you pay.
  • Treating AAA’s ownership total as a service quote: its figure includes many costs unrelated to maintenance and repair, and its methodology changed between 2025 and 2026.

What a buyer should take away

Luxury cars are often more expensive to maintain over a long ownership period, particularly among several European brands, because parts, labor and complex systems can raise the cost of each visit. The data does not support applying one fixed premium to every luxury vehicle. Lexus, Acura and Genesis show lower annual averages than several higher-cost luxury peers, while Buick and Lincoln rank favorably in Consumer Reports’ long-run brand comparison.

For a sound decision, compare matched vehicles over the same years and mileage, separate scheduled maintenance from repairs, examine cost, frequency and severity together, and account for the warranty’s end date. That process tells you far more than the badge on the grille.
