Sometimes—but not for every pair. Whether a child can wear light-up shoes in rain depends on the exact model’s water-protection and care instructions. Skechers says its light-up shoes tolerate light moisture such as rain or damp grass, while warning that deep puddles or submersion may affect performance. Its customer-support guidance is more cautious and says light-up styles should be kept dry. Stride Rite describes its M2P light-up shoes as waterproof because the light units are sealed inside the outsole. Treat these as model-specific manufacturer statements, not a universal rule for light-up footwear.
The practical answer parents need
A short walk through drizzle may be acceptable for a model that is explicitly rated for light moisture. Prolonged rain, deep puddles, hose play and submersion are different exposures and should be avoided unless the manufacturer specifically says the exact model is waterproof and covers that use. If the product page, box or care label does not clearly make a water-resistance or waterproof claim, choose dry conditions instead.

Water protection is not determined by the fact that a shoe lights up. Light-up footwear can use different uppers, seams, batteries, wiring and outsole designs. A waterproof claim for one line does not transfer to another line from the same company, much less to another manufacturer.

What Skechers says about light moisture
Skechers’ “The Ultimate Parents’ Guide to Skechers Kids’ Light-Up Shoes,” published February 16, 2026, states: “They are water-resistant for light moisture (rain, damp grass), but deep puddles or submersion may affect performance.” The sentence applies to Skechers shoes covered by that guide. It does not establish a rating for every Skechers light-up model or for light-up shoes generally.

Why Skechers’ support advice sounds stricter
The Skechers New Zealand Customer Experience Centre tells customers to keep light-up styles dry and warns that submerging them may cause the lights to fail. Read together, the two pieces of guidance mean that incidental light moisture may be tolerated, but deliberate or heavy water exposure is not a safe assumption. When instructions conflict in tone, use the more conservative direction for the particular pair and contact the manufacturer if the model is unclear.
A model with a specific waterproof claim
Stride Rite’s “Kids’ Light-Up Shoe Guide” identifies its M2P light-up shoes as “machine-washable and waterproof” and explains that the light units are sealed inside the outsole. That construction claim is specific to the M2P line. It should not be used to justify washing or soaking a different Stride Rite model.

How to check the exact pair before a rainy day
- Find the precise model name or number. Look inside the tongue, on the box, on the receipt or in the online order. “Light-up shoes” is a category, not a water rating.
- Read the manufacturer’s listing and care label. Look for an explicit statement such as “waterproof” or “water-resistant,” and note whether it mentions rain, damp grass, puddles, washing or submersion.
- Separate upper-material claims from electronics claims. A water-resistant fabric does not automatically prove that the wiring, switch or battery compartment is protected. Prefer a statement that addresses the complete shoe or explains how the light units are sealed.
- Check the cleaning method. If the instructions prohibit immersion, machine washing or machine drying, those restrictions matter even when the shoe can tolerate a little rain.
- Ask the manufacturer when wording is missing. Give customer support the exact model number and ask whether ordinary rain, standing water and washing are permitted. Keep the answer with the purchase information.
- Use the stricter interpretation when evidence is incomplete. Without an explicit waterproof claim, keep the pair out of prolonged rain, deep puddles and submersion.
Match the exposure to the model’s instructions
Drizzle or a brief trip from car to door
For a Skechers model covered by the parent guide, light rain falls within the described “light moisture” example. Wipe off visible water afterward and let the shoes dry naturally. For any other model, make the same choice only if its own instructions allow light rain.

Skechers specifically includes damp grass in its light-moisture description. That does not mean a child can stand in wet grass indefinitely or that water reaching the ankle opening is harmless. Exposure duration and the condition of the pair still matter.

Steady rain or a long outdoor activity
Longer exposure gives water more opportunities to enter seams and openings. Unless the exact model is explicitly designated waterproof for this use, choose another pair or keep the activity short and provide dry footwear.
Deep puddles, splash parks and hose play
These conditions go beyond the light-moisture language in Skechers’ guide. Avoid them for models that are merely water-resistant. A waterproof label can be considered only within the limits stated by that model’s care instructions; it is not permission to ignore the manufacturer’s washing and drying rules.
Submersion
Do not intentionally submerge light-up shoes unless the exact manufacturer instructions expressly permit it. Skechers warns that submersion may affect performance and separately advises keeping light-up styles dry. A failed light is usually a product-performance problem, but the child should not continue wearing a damaged shoe if the sole, fastening or structure has been affected.

Use the model’s own instructions first. Skechers’ care guidance provides a conservative routine that is suitable for light wetting when no different directions are supplied.

- Remove the shoes from the wet environment. Empty any visible water and remove loose dirt before it dries onto the upper.
- Spot-clean rather than soak. Use mild soap and warm water on a soft brush or cloth. Work on the dirty area without placing the whole shoe in a bucket or sink.
- Wipe away residue. Use a damp cloth to remove soap and loosened soil. Avoid forcing water through seams, the tongue opening or the charging and switch areas, if present.
- Air-dry naturally. Place the shoes in a ventilated area away from direct heat. Do not use a radiator, hair dryer, heat gun or other high-heat source.
- Do not machine-wash or machine-dry unless the exact model permits it. Skechers specifically advises against machine washing and machine drying for its light-up shoes. Stride Rite’s machine-washable statement applies to the M2P line described in its guide, not automatically to other models.
- Check function before the next outing. Once completely dry, inspect the sole, stitching, fasteners and light operation. If the lights stop working, flicker or behave unusually, stop trying to revive the electronics with more water or heat and contact the manufacturer.
Battery and electrical safety
Skechers customer support describes its light-up styles as containing non-replaceable coin batteries and warns customers not to try to access them. Do not cut open the sole, pry out a battery or let a child investigate the electronics. Opening the shoe can create sharp edges, damage the structure and defeat whatever sealing the model has.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s general “Toy Safety” information explains that children’s products are subject to safety requirements, but it does not create a universal rain-safety rating for shoes. A separate CPSC warning dated January 15, 2026, concerns Akavivo submersible LED lights with accessible coin batteries. That warning is useful background on the danger of loose coin batteries, not evidence that rain makes batteries in children’s light-up shoes hazardous or that all light-up shoes share the same construction.
Keep the safety questions separate: water may cause a shoe’s lights or wiring to fail, while an accessible coin battery presents a serious ingestion hazard. Do not claim that ordinary rain creates a battery-ingestion risk unless the particular product’s instructions or a credible safety notice says so.
Choosing light-up shoes for a wet climate
If rain is a regular part of a child’s walk to school or outdoor routine, make water protection a purchase requirement rather than an assumption.

- Look for the exact word “waterproof” on the exact model. A general category description or a claim attached to another line is not enough.
- Read the scope of the claim. Confirm whether it covers ordinary rain only, puddles, washing or submersion.
- Check how the lights are protected. Stride Rite’s M2P explanation that the light units are sealed inside the outsole is the kind of model-specific construction detail that makes a claim more meaningful.
- Review cleaning and drying directions before buying. A shoe that cannot be immersed may still be suitable for brief rain, but it will require careful spot cleaning.
- Keep a dry alternative available. Even a waterproof-rated pair can become uncomfortable when soaked from above the ankle or when a child remains outdoors for hours.
- Save the care instructions. Product pages change, and the box may be discarded. Keeping the model number and current instructions helps if the lights stop working or a warranty question arises.
Common mistakes and safer fixes
Mistake: treating every light-up shoe as waterproof
Fix: Verify the exact model’s wording. The existence of LEDs says nothing about water sealing.
Mistake: treating “water-resistant” as permission to play in puddles
Fix: Read the exposure examples. Skechers distinguishes light moisture from deep puddles and submersion; follow that boundary.
Mistake: relying on a parent company’s general guide for a different model
Fix: Match the guide, model number and region. If the model is not clearly covered, ask customer support or keep it dry.

Mistake: washing all light-up shoes in a machine because one model allows it
Fix: Follow the model-specific care label. Skechers advises against machine washing and drying; Stride Rite’s machine-washable statement is tied to its M2P line.
Mistake: opening the sole to replace a battery
Fix: Treat non-replaceable coin batteries as sealed components. Contact the manufacturer about a failure instead of accessing the battery yourself.
What is—and is not—known about failure and injury risk
No directly relevant independent published statistic establishes how often rain causes light-up shoe failures or injuries. Manufacturer water-resistance and durability statements are product information, not independent comparative testing. The available CPSC material addresses general toy compliance and a separate LED-light product, so it cannot supply a universal safety score for children’s light-up shoes.
The practical conclusion is therefore conditional rather than numerical: choose a model with an explicit, applicable water rating; keep merely water-resistant pairs away from deep water; dry wet shoes gently; and stop using a pair that shows structural or electrical damage.
