Not necessarily. A leatherette top does not tell you whether a chair mat is safe for hardwood: the backing, the floor’s finish, and both manufacturers’ compatibility instructions matter. Choose a mat expressly suitable for hard floors, confirm it with your flooring maker, and keep the mat and floor clean and dry.
Why “leatherette” is not enough to judge safety
“Leatherette” describes the mat’s top surface, not necessarily the material that touches the floor. It does not establish whether the backing could slip, affect the finish, or be compatible with your specific hardwood. Available product descriptions and general chair-mat guidance do not directly test leatherette mats against hardwood finishes, so a blanket yes or no would be misleading.

What backing works on hardwood?
The chair-mat selection and care guide recommends smooth mats for hard floors such as wood. For smooth, high-gloss floors, including polished wood, it advises using a smooth mat with compatible anti-slip backing to reduce slipping. It also warns that spiked mats intended for carpet can damage wood floors.

Do not treat “smooth” and “anti-slip” as contradictory: the mat should be suitable for a hard floor, while its maker should specify that its backing provides appropriate grip on your type of surface. If the product instructions do not say whether it is suitable for hardwood or polished finishes, ask the mat maker rather than inferring compatibility from the leatherette top.
Check the flooring manufacturer’s guidance
Tarkett North America’s hardwood flooring care guidance says: “Use chair pads approved for use on hardwood under any repetitive caster action (such as desk chairs, roller carts, etc.).” This matters because a chair repeatedly rolling over one area is different from a mat used only as a stationary floor covering.

Tarkett also cautions that rubber backing and dyes in mats and rugs can discolor flooring, and recommends checking compatibility with the flooring manufacturer. The underside material and any colorants matter; a leatherette surface alone does not reveal either.
A practical compatibility check before you buy or use one
- Identify your floor and finish. Find the flooring maker’s care instructions, including any restrictions for chair pads, backing materials, or high-gloss finishes.
- Check the exact mat model. Look for an explicit statement that it is intended for hard floors or wood, and review the material of the floor-contact side. If either is unclear, contact the mat maker.
- Confirm the backing suits the surface. On polished or high-gloss wood, follow the mat maker’s guidance for preventing slippage. Do not use a spiked carpet mat on wood.
- Ask the flooring maker about conflicts. In particular, check whether the backing material or dyes are compatible with your floor’s finish and whether the maker approves a chair pad under repeated caster movement.
- Keep both contact surfaces clean and dry. ULINE’s PVC chair-mat care instructions say dust and cleaning-product residue can affect grip and advise cleaning and drying both the floor and mat before use. Follow the instructions for your own product; this is not a universal guarantee for every mat.
- Size it for the chair’s movement. Cover the area where the chair repeatedly rolls. The available guidance does not set a universal mat size, so base coverage on your desk layout and chair movement.
How to interpret product claims
Some manufacturers describe particular mats as suitable for wood or other hard floors. For example, Floortex’s Ecotex BioPVC hard-floor mat is described by its manufacturer as suitable for wood among other hard-floor types. That is a claim about that product, not proof that every leatherette mat is compatible with every hardwood finish.

Likewise, a supplier description of a textured underside as gripping hardwood does not establish how it will behave on your specific floor. Product claims can help narrow your options, but they do not replace checking the complete backing materials and your flooring maker’s instructions.

If the mat maker does not identify the backing or specify hardwood compatibility, or the floor maker’s guidance is unclear, do not assume the mat is safe based on its top surface. Ask both manufacturers about the exact model and flooring finish before placing it on the floor. No safety percentage or leatherette-specific hardwood test is established by the available sources.
