Some wild species cause vomiting and diarrhea; others can produce neurologic effects, liver or kidney injury, coma, or death. A mushroom’s presence in grass does not prove that anyone has been poisoned, but color, shape, location, a phone app, or a casual photograph cannot establish that it is safe. Keep children and pets from eating mushrooms, supervise outdoor play, and contact the appropriate poison-control, veterinary, or emergency service immediately after suspected ingestion. Do not wait for symptoms.
What makes a lawn mushroom dangerous?
The central hazard is ingestion. Wild mushrooms can contain different toxins, and closely related harmless and poisonous species may look alike. Poison Control warns that even people who think they recognize a mushroom can be fooled by look-alikes. The relevant features for a reliable identification may include the cap’s shape, color and texture; gills or pores; spore color; the stalk and its base; how the cap joins the stalk; the growth pattern; and what the mushroom is growing on. A quick look at a patch of grass does not provide that level of certainty.

Possible effects range from gastrointestinal illness to hallucinations, coma and delayed liver damage, depending on the species and dose. Pet cases can include severe stomach upset, breathing difficulty, seizures, liver or kidney injury and death. These are examples of what toxic species can do, not a way to identify the mushroom in your yard. Poison Control and the ASPCA both advise treating an unknown mushroom as potentially hazardous if a person or animal may have eaten it.
Simply seeing mushrooms on a lawn is not evidence that a child or pet has been poisoned. The practical response to presence alone is prevention: remove visible mushrooms, supervise outdoor time and check the area again because new mushrooms may appear quickly.

Can you tell whether a lawn mushroom is poisonous?
There is no dependable “red cap,” “white mushroom,” size, smell or lawn-location rule that declares an unidentified mushroom safe. Local knowledge may not transfer to another region, and a photograph or identification app can miss features that matter to a mycologist. Poison Control’s guidance is unequivocal: “It is NEVER safe to eat a wild mushroom unless a mushroom identification expert says so.” That applies equally to feeding a piece to a child or letting a pet sample one.
Do not taste, cook or offer a mushroom to test it. Cooking does not turn every poisonous species into a safe food, and an informal field-guide match is not expert confirmation. If an expert needs a specimen, keep it only if you can do so without touching it unnecessarily and without exposing a child or pet. Clear close-up photographs of the cap, underside, stalk and base, plus the surrounding lawn and what the mushroom was growing on, may help an expert. Identification should support professional medical or veterinary advice, not delay it.
What to do if a child may have eaten a lawn mushroom
Call for case-specific advice as soon as you think ingestion may have occurred. Poison Control specifically says not to wait for symptoms because some effects are delayed.

- Move the child away from the mushrooms. Check whether any pieces remain in the mouth and preserve the mushroom or photographs if it is safe to do so. Do not taste the specimen yourself.
- In the United States, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or use webPOISONCONTROL. Give the child’s age and weight if known, the time of possible exposure, the amount that may be missing, current symptoms and your location. Poison specialists can tell you what to do next for that specific exposure.
- If the child is having trouble breathing, is unresponsive, has a seizure or is rapidly deteriorating, call emergency services immediately. Poison Control remains an appropriate resource for exposure advice, but life-threatening symptoms require emergency care.
- Follow the poison specialist’s instructions. Do not rely on a symptom-free period to decide that the mushroom was harmless. Delayed illness is possible.
Outside the United States, use your country’s poison-information service or emergency number. The correct service and number vary by jurisdiction; do not substitute an internet identification for local clinical advice.
What to do if a dog or cat may have eaten one
Contact a veterinarian or animal poison service promptly, even when the pet looks normal. For U.S. pet exposures, the ASPCA lists (888) 426-4435 for ASPCA Poison Control. You can also call your regular veterinarian or an emergency veterinary hospital. ASPCA guidance notes that delay can be dangerous with some mushrooms.
- Prevent further access. Remove the pet from the area and secure any remaining mushroom without handling it more than necessary.
- Call the veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control. Report the pet’s species, approximate weight, possible amount eaten, time of exposure and any signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, unusual behavior, weakness or breathing changes.
- Provide useful specimen information. If safe, take clear photographs of the mushroom and its surroundings or retain a sample for professionals. Do not depend on your own species identification.
- Go to veterinary care immediately if symptoms are present. Bring the photographs or specimen and the exposure details. Follow the veterinarian’s directions rather than attempting home treatment.
For some liver-toxic mushrooms, ASPCA’s 2017 pet guidance describes a possible symptom delay of 8–24 hours. That is a possible window for some species, not a universal timetable. A normal-looking pet shortly after an exposure still needs prompt professional advice.

Symptoms to watch for—and why waiting is unsafe
Effects vary by species, amount and individual. Poison Control lists vomiting and diarrhea among possible outcomes and notes that certain mushrooms can cause hallucinations, coma or delayed liver damage. ASPCA describes severe stomach upset, breathing difficulty, seizures, liver or kidney injury and death in pets exposed to toxic species. Symptoms do not identify the mushroom, and their absence does not prove safety.

How to reduce the risk in a yard
Check before children and pets go outside
Walk the parts of the lawn where children play and where pets sniff or forage. Pick up visible mushrooms before outdoor time, place them where children and animals cannot reach them, and inspect again later. ASPCA notes that mushrooms may appear quickly, so a single cleanup is not a permanent guarantee.
Supervise, rather than relying on removal alone
Children should be supervised in areas where mushrooms may grow. The CDC likewise advises that children should not be fed wild mushrooms unless experts have identified them. Keep pets under direct observation outdoors, especially dogs that investigate or eat objects from the ground. Removal lowers opportunity but does not establish that every mushroom has been found or that the lawn is risk-free.

Teach a simple “do not eat” rule
Tell children never to put a wild mushroom in their mouth and to show an adult instead. Avoid turning identification into a game in which a child is invited to touch or taste an unknown specimen. Keep pets from practicing scavenging behavior around mushroom patches and interrupt the behavior early.
Do not assume a product is required
The available guidance supports inspection, removal and supervision; it does not establish a particular fungicide, barrier, leash or removal tool as necessary or reliably protective. If mushrooms recur or you are concerned about the lawn’s conditions, ask a local lawn or environmental professional about the site without allowing that conversation to delay poison advice after an ingestion.

- Whether the exposed person is a child or the animal’s species, age and approximate weight.
- When the mushroom may have been eaten and whether the amount is known or only suspected.
- Any pieces, vomit or photographs that can be collected safely; do not taste or cook a specimen.
- Where it was growing, including the lawn, mulch, soil, tree roots or decaying wood.
- Current signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, unusual behavior, weakness, breathing difficulty, seizures or yellowing of the eyes or skin.
Experts may examine cap shape and texture, gills or pores, spore color, the stalk and base, attachment points, growth pattern and substrate. A single top-down photograph usually omits several of these features. Even a good photograph is supporting information, not permission to wait.
What the available statistics do—and do not—show
Published numbers demonstrate that mushroom poisoning can be serious, but they do not provide a lawn-specific probability.
- A CDC report published in 2021 analyzed U.S. claims from 2016–2018 and identified 556 accidental poisonous-mushroom ingestion diagnoses. The report highlighted serious outcomes among young children and recommended supervision outdoors where mushrooms might grow. These claims are not a current incidence estimate and do not isolate lawn exposure. Read the CDC report.
- A California Poison Control System and California Department of Public Health response reported by CDC in 2026 described 39 suspected cases, three liver transplants and four deaths after foraged wild-mushroom ingestion between November 18, 2025, and March 17, 2026. Those cases show the potential severity of particular ingestions; they are not a measure of risk from mushrooms growing in an ordinary lawn. Read the CDC MMWR report.
No published figure in these sources estimates the probability that a child or pet will be poisoned specifically by a lawn mushroom. The prudent decision therefore depends on exposure: presence calls for prevention, while possible ingestion calls for immediate expert guidance.
Common mistakes after a suspected exposure
- Waiting for symptoms: delayed onset is documented for some human and pet exposures.
- Trusting color, shape or location: these clues cannot reliably separate look-alikes.
- Accepting an app or social-media identification: missing physical features and regional differences can produce a dangerous false match.
- Feeding a small piece “to see what happens”: there is no safe test portion for an unidentified wild mushroom.
- Assuming removal solved the problem: mushrooms can return or appear elsewhere, so supervision and repeat checks remain important.
- Calling the wrong service: use human Poison Control for a child and a veterinarian or animal poison service for a pet.
Bottom line for parents and pet owners
An unidentified mushroom on the lawn is not automatically poisonous, but it cannot be declared safe by appearance. Keep children and pets from eating any wild mushroom, inspect and clear the lawn before outdoor use, and supervise them because new mushrooms can appear quickly. If ingestion may have happened, call U.S. Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 (or use webPOISONCONTROL) for a child, or contact a veterinarian/ASPCA Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 for a pet. Seek emergency care for severe symptoms, and never wait for symptoms merely because the mushroom looked harmless.
