Usually, the grub itself is not the main hazard documented by extension services. Lawn grubs are beetle or chafer larvae that eat grass roots, causing thinning turf and patches that lift easily. Birds and mammals may dig for them, but digging does not prove that grubs are present. The available extension guidance does not establish that lawn grubs commonly poison or injure people, dogs, cats, or birds—and it also does not prove that every species or ingestion exposure is harmless. Pesticides used to control grubs are a separate exposure question with product-specific risks and instructions.

What lawn grubs are and what they do

Lawn grubs are the immature stages of several beetles and chafers. They live in the soil and feed on grass roots. Their established effect is damage to turf, not a documented pattern of poisoning people, pets, or birds.

Healthy grass can tolerate some root feeding. As feeding increases, patches may thin, lose vigor, turn brown, and pull up readily because the roots no longer hold the sod firmly. The damage can be worsened when skunks, moles, raccoons, or birds tear into the lawn while searching for food.

UNH Extension explains that animal activity is only a clue. Wildlife also digs for earthworms and other insects, so holes or lifted turf cannot identify grubs by themselves. The only dependable confirmation is to inspect the soil beneath the turf. UNH Extension describes the damage and sampling method.

Are lawn grubs harmful to people?

What is established

The extension materials available for this question focus on turf damage, wildlife feeding, and grub-control products. They do not provide direct toxicology evidence showing that ordinary contact with lawn grubs harms people, nor do they establish a typical poisoning risk from accidentally touching or eating one.

That evidence gap is important. It is more accurate to say that common harm has not been established in these materials than to promise that every grub species is harmless. Species, contaminants in the soil, and the amount and circumstances of an exposure can vary.

Practical precautions

  • Wash hands after handling soil, turf, or grubs, especially before eating or preparing food.
  • Keep children from deliberately putting grubs or contaminated soil in their mouths.
  • Use gloves if you have cuts, dermatitis, or a reason to avoid direct contact with soil organisms.
  • If a person has swallowed grubs, handled treated turf, or develops symptoms, obtain case-specific advice from a qualified poison-information or medical professional. Do not infer treatment from the grub’s appearance.

The larger household risk often comes from a control product rather than the larva. An insecticide can have inhalation, skin, ingestion, environmental, or residue precautions that do not apply to an untreated grub. Read the product label before mixing, applying, re-entering, or allowing children onto treated turf.

Are lawn grubs poisonous to dogs and cats?

Eating or touching an untreated grub

No authoritative toxicology guidance in the cited extension material settles whether every lawn-grub species is safe for a dog or cat to eat. The sources do not document a general pattern of grub poisoning, but they also do not support a universal guarantee of safety. A pet that mouths a single grub is not automatically known to be poisoned; the sensible response is to observe the animal and seek professional advice if anything seems abnormal.

When to call a professional

Contact a veterinarian or animal poison-information professional when a pet has eaten an unknown quantity, consumed grubs from a treated lawn, or shows signs such as repeated vomiting, weakness, tremors, breathing difficulty, collapse, or unusual behavior. Have the product name and active ingredient available if a pesticide may be involved. The appropriate response depends on the species, product, dose, and timing; the extension information does not provide a home-treatment protocol.

Why pesticide exposure must be separated from grub exposure

Never treat a statement about an untreated grub as approval for a pesticide application. Products differ in active ingredient, formulation, legal use, waiting period, and restrictions around children, pets, wildlife, water, and pollinators. Follow the label for the specific product and the local conditions in which it is registered.

Do birds eat lawn grubs, and are grubs dangerous to them?

Birds commonly forage for soil invertebrates

Birds can feed on grubs, and UNH Extension’s grub-control video transcript lists birds, moles, and skunks feeding in a lawn as possible indications that grubs are present. That behavior shows that grubs are available as prey; it does not establish that the grubs are toxic or nutritious in every circumstance.

Digging is not a diagnosis

Birds and mammals also search for earthworms and other insects. UC IPM describes vertebrate digging for white grubs while warning that managing invertebrates with insecticides can create non-target concerns. Therefore, bird activity should prompt an inspection rather than an automatic treatment.

The main bird-related concern may be the treatment

If a lawn is treated, birds can be exposed to the product, residues, or affected prey. The risk depends on the active ingredient, application rate, drying or re-entry requirements, and environmental movement. UC Statewide IPM identifies possible contamination and harm to human health or ecosystems from insecticide use. Keep treatments targeted, prevent runoff, and follow all label directions intended to protect wildlife and people.

How to confirm that grubs are causing lawn damage

Do not choose a control product based only on brown patches or bird activity. UNH Extension author Nate Bernitz states that the only way to be sure is to scout for grubs in the lawn.

  1. Choose a representative spot. Sample where turf is thinning or lifting, not only at the most damaged edge.
  2. Mark a one-square-foot area. A square about 12 inches by 12 inches gives a count that can be compared with extension guidance.
  3. Cut the turf. Use a shovel or lawn edger to cut three sides of the square.
  4. Peel back the sod. Fold the section carefully so the roots and upper soil remain visible.
  5. Inspect and count. Look through the soil and root zone for grubs, recording the number and their approximate size.
  6. Replace the sample. Lay the turf back in place and water it if needed so the roots can recover.
  7. Compare with local advice. In its New Hampshire guidance, UNH Extension describes 10 or more grubs per square foot as a serious infestation. That is a regional threshold from a 2019 article, not a universal treatment rule.

Counts that justify treatment vary with grass health, grub species, soil, weather, expected damage, and local recommendations. Ask your state or county extension service for the threshold and timing used in your area before applying anything.

Observation What it can mean What to do next
Birds or mammals pecking and digging Grubs may be present, but earthworms and other insects can attract the same behavior. Inspect a measured turf-and-soil section.
Turf pulls up with little resistance Root feeding may have weakened the sod; drought or disease can also contribute. Check roots and count grubs before selecting treatment.
Fewer than the local action threshold Grass may tolerate the feeding without economic or cosmetic justification for treatment. Improve turf health and monitor.
At or above a local threshold A heavier infestation is more likely to cause continuing damage. Confirm species, life stage, timing, and an appropriately labeled control.

When grub damage warrants action

Start with turf tolerance

Some feeding is compatible with healthy grass. Irrigation problems, compacted soil, mowing stress, drought, disease, and other insects can produce similar thinning. Confirming grubs prevents unnecessary pesticide exposure and protects organisms that are not causing the damage.

Consider timing and life stage

Control success depends on when the target grub is near the soil surface and susceptible to the selected method. Local extension recommendations are more useful than a calendar date copied from another region. The same count can have different consequences in vigorous turf, drought-stressed turf, or a lawn approaching winter dormancy.

Use an action threshold, not a single alarming patch

One damaged patch does not automatically justify whole-lawn treatment. Sample more than one representative area when damage is uneven, then compare the count and turf condition with local guidance. If the cause is uncertain, correcting watering, mowing height, drainage, or soil compaction may be safer than treating an unconfirmed infestation.

How grub-control choices affect people, pets, birds, and ecosystems

Read the exact label

Before using a control, verify the active ingredient, target grub, application rate, permitted sites, protective equipment, watering instructions, re-entry interval, and restrictions around children, pets, edible plants, drains, and water. A product marketed for one grub species or life stage may not be effective or legal for another.

A narrow biological-control statement

A 2024 Ask Extension answer reports that a Bacillus thuringiensis galleriae grub-control product is safe for pets and children when the label directions are followed. That statement is limited to the product class and label use described there. It must not be generalized to all formulations, all grub species, all pesticides, or exposure that violates the label. Read the Ask Extension answer.

Biological versus chemical approaches

Biological products and beneficial nematodes may be options in some regions, while conventional insecticides may be appropriate in others. The relevant comparison is not a blanket claim that one category is safe and the other dangerous. Evaluate confirmed grub presence and density, local timing, the identified species, expected effectiveness, label requirements, and possible effects on people, pets, birds, pollinators, and soil organisms.

Minimize non-target exposure

  • Treat only confirmed problem areas when the label permits spot treatment.
  • Do not exceed the labeled rate or apply during conditions that increase drift or runoff.
  • Keep people and pets off treated areas for the full label-specified interval.
  • Prevent granules or spray from reaching drains, ponds, streams, vegetable beds, and neighboring habitat.
  • Store products in their original, closed containers away from children and animals.
  • Dispose of leftovers and containers according to the label and local rules.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake: treating bird activity as proof

Correction: Sample the soil and roots. Wildlife foraging is suggestive, not conclusive.

Mistake: presenting 10 grubs per square foot as a universal rule

Correction: Identify it as UNH’s New Hampshire benchmark for a serious infestation and obtain a regional threshold for your lawn.

Mistake: assuming a pet-safety statement covers every product

Correction: Match the statement to the exact active ingredient, formulation, label, and application conditions.

Mistake: blaming the grub for a pesticide reaction

Correction: Record the product, dose, timing, and symptoms, then contact a veterinarian, poison-information service, or medical professional for case-specific advice.

A cautious decision checklist

  • Have you inspected a measured section of turf and soil?
  • Did you identify grubs rather than relying on holes, birds, or brown grass alone?
  • Does the count and turf condition meet your local extension service’s action threshold?
  • Do you know the likely grub species and life stage?
  • Is the selected method labeled for that target and timing?
  • Have you planned protections for children, pets, birds, pollinators, waterways, and beneficial soil organisms?
  • Do you know the re-entry, watering, storage, and disposal requirements before applying?

Bottom line on lawn-grub safety

Extension guidance establishes lawn grubs as root-feeding larvae that can damage turf and attract wildlife. It does not establish that touching or eating ordinary lawn grubs commonly poisons people, pets, or birds, and it does not justify a universal guarantee that every exposure is harmless. Confirm an infestation by sampling the soil, treat regional thresholds as regional, and treat any insecticide as a separate chemical exposure with its own label and non-target risks. When a person or animal is symptomatic or may have contacted a treatment, get individualized advice from a qualified medical, veterinary, or poison-information professional.
