It did not document procurement, operational fielding or a decision to make jetpacks standard equipment for U.S. soldiers.
What “one step closer” meant in the original story
The headline referred to reported discussions, not a completed military program. Futurism said Jetpack Aviation was in talks with U.S. special forces and that the Wall Street Journal had reported an R&D agreement with U.S. Special Operations Command concerning a four-turbine military jetpack.

An R&D discussion can mean that a technology is being examined or tested. It does not establish that the military bought it, approved it for missions, issued it to troops or selected it as standard equipment. The report supplied no evidence of any of those later stages.

Did the U.S. military adopt Jetpack Aviation’s JB9?
The sourced answer is no—not on the evidence in that 2016 article. The report identified the JB9 as Jetpack Aviation’s then-current version, but it did not announce a contract for regular equipment, a deployment, a fielding date or a standard-issue decision.

| Item | Figure reported | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Reported weight | 85 pounds | Futurism’s 2016 description of an aluminum-and-carbon-fiber JB9 |
| Reported fuel use | 11 gallons for a 10-minute flight | A fuel-use claim attached to the 2016 report, not a current endurance specification |
| Reported development spending | About $10 million | The article’s estimate of development investment at that time |
| Intended market price | About $250,000 per unit | A planned price cited in 2016, not a verified current sale price |
How the other flying devices in the article compare
Futurism also mentioned the Martin Jetpack, Yves “Jetman” Rossy’s jetwing and Franky Zapata’s Flyboard Air. The story did not measure them under common conditions, so these figures cannot establish which system is faster, safer, more practical or more suitable for soldiers.
| System | Attribute mentioned in the 2016 article | Comparison limit |
|---|---|---|
| Martin Jetpack | Flight time of up to 30 minutes | No common test conditions or military suitability assessment were provided |
| Jetman jetwing | 322 kph (200 mph) and about 10 minutes of flight | The reported speed and endurance were not presented as a controlled comparison with the JB9 or other systems |
| Flyboard Air | Mentioned by name | The article’s brief description did not provide a comparable current specification set |
What would have to happen before “standard issue” was accurate?
A technology moves from an engineering conversation to standard soldier equipment only when the military establishes a documented requirement, evaluates the system, funds and awards procurement, addresses training and sustainment, and formally fields it. The 2016 report stops at the earlier discussion and development stage.

- Requirement: the service identifies a mission that the device can meet better than existing equipment.
- Testing: performance, reliability, safety and operational limits are evaluated in relevant conditions.
- Procurement: an authorized purchase or production decision is made.
- Fielding: units receive the equipment, along with training, maintenance and operating procedures.
- Standardization: the item is formally designated for routine issue rather than remaining an experiment or specialist demonstrator.

What the headline gets right—and what it does not
What it gets right
Jetpack Aviation was reportedly engaging with U.S. special-operations interests, and a four-turbine military jetpack was associated with reported R&D work. That is a meaningful sign that military users were willing to examine the concept.

What it does not prove
It does not prove that the United States adopted the JB9, that soldiers were equipped with jetpacks, that the devices were ready for routine missions or that jetpacks were on a path to universal issue. Because the source is from 2016, its program status and commercial figures are also dated.

The headline describes a possibility being investigated, not a procurement outcome. Based on the June 14, 2016 report, jetpacks were the subject of talks and development involving special-operations organizations; they were not documented as standard equipment for U.S. soldiers.
