Those reports are anecdotal: they do not establish how common the marks are, prove that the finish is fading, or identify a cause. If you notice a mark, avoid abrasive cleaning and ask Apple Support to assess your device if it persists.
What owners have reported—and what that proves
Two Reddit posts describe an oily appearance or discoloration around the camera area: one asks about spots around the camera, and another asks whether marks around the lens rings are normal. These are individual users’ observations, not a verified diagnosis. You can read the posts here and here.
- The posts do not establish that the finish itself is losing color.
- They do not identify a cause or show how many phones are affected.
- No cited source verifies a model-wide finish defect or a prevalence rate.
Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, in black, silver, glacier, and burgundy finishes; availability began September 18, according to its announcement. The launch information does not address these user reports.
Could a mark be residue rather than fading?
Apple says that material transferred from items such as denim or objects in a pocket can appear on textured glass or Ceramic Shield, resemble a scratch, and often be removed. That is general cleaning guidance, not a diagnosis of the marks in the posts, and it does not establish that genuine finish fading can be cleaned away. See Apple’s iPhone cleaning guidance.

A mark’s appearance alone cannot tell you whether it is residue, a scratch, or a lasting change to the finish. If it does not lift with a gentle wipe, stop rather than trying stronger products or repeated scrubbing.
How to clean an iPhone safely
- Unplug cables and turn off the iPhone.
- Use a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth to remove dust and wipe the exterior gently. Keep moisture out of openings.
- Do not use abrasives or cleaning products unless following Apple’s separate disinfection guidance. Apple warns that cleaning products and abrasive materials can diminish coatings or scratch the iPhone.
Apple’s disinfection guidance allows gentle use of 70% isopropyl alcohol wipes, 75% ethyl alcohol wipes, or disinfectant wipes on exterior surfaces, followed by a soft, slightly damp lint-free cloth. It says not to use bleach or hydrogen peroxide, let moisture enter openings, or submerge the phone. This is disinfection advice, not a treatment shown to reverse discoloration. Avoid polishing compounds, solvents, and aggressive scrubbing.

When to contact Apple Support
If a mark remains after gentle cleaning, changes, or concerns you, contact Apple Support or seek service advice for your device and region. The available sources do not establish a finish-specific repair policy or guarantee coverage or replacement; Apple will need to assess the particular phone. A case can cover the finish, but the sources do not show that cases prevent or fix discoloration. Apple’s launch announcement mentions MagSafe cases, without making such a claim.
