Are Humanoid Robots Safe Around Children and Pets? Key Risks and Precautions

Humanoid robots are conditionally safe around children and pets—not inherently safe. A home deployment is a moving machine in an unpredictable environment. Safe use depends on the specific model’s contact and balance safeguards, a controlled operating area, working emergency stops, privacy settings, and an adult supervising every interaction. Do not treat a humanoid robot as a toy, babysitter, or autonomous pet-care device.

No authoritative consumer injury-rate statistic establishes how often humanoid robots injure children or animals. The practical approach is therefore to control exposure, verify the robot’s safety behavior before purchase, and stop use whenever its movement, sensors, or software behave unexpectedly.

What can go wrong?

The immediate hazards are physical contact, falls, pinch points, and unexpected motion. A humanoid robot can move its arms, hands, head, torso, or legs without a child or animal understanding its path. A small hand, finger, tail, collar, or item of clothing can enter a joint or gripper’s closing area. A robot that loses balance can fall into a person, pet, furniture, or itself.

ISO 13482:2014, the published personal-care-robot safety reference, covers physical human–robot contact and explicitly treats domestic animals as safety-related objects. It also warns that, when the 2014 edition was published, “no exhaustive and internationally recognized data (e.g. pain or injury limits) exist” for impact hazards such as collisions. That means a manufacturer’s claim that a robot is gentle is not the same as a universally established safe-force threshold.

Collision, crushing, and pinch injuries

Risk rises with heavier limbs, faster movement, rigid edges, powerful actuators, and hands that can grasp or push. Ask whether the robot detects contact before applying force, limits force and speed after contact, and protects fingers at joints and grippers. A child who suddenly hugs, climbs on, or reaches under the robot may create a situation the robot was not designed to handle.

Falls and loss of balance

Legged robots can stumble on rugs, toys, thresholds, or a pet crossing their route. A fall may be more dangerous than a slow arm movement because the whole machine becomes a moving mass. Ask how instability is detected, whether the robot enters a protective stop, what position it takes during a stop, and whether it can restart automatically after recovering.

Unexpected starts and control failures

Voice commands, scheduled routines, remote control, software updates, charging transitions, and sensor errors can all change the robot’s state. A child may not know that a paused robot can resume. A physical emergency stop must be available before anyone approaches.

How to supervise children safely

Children should be outside the robot’s active area during setup, calibration, software updates, charging changes, and troubleshooting. Use a closed door, gate, or other physical barrier when a child could enter the path unnoticed. During an allowed interaction, an adult should remain close enough to reach the stop control immediately, not merely monitor through a camera.

Before the first interaction

  1. Read the operating limits. Record the robot’s stated speed, reach, payload, minimum clearance, floor requirements, and prohibited situations. Do not let a child ride, climb, pull, push, or hang from it unless the manufacturer explicitly permits that use.
  2. Create a no-entry zone. Mark the robot’s expected path and the space needed for a fall. Remove stools, low tables, loose rugs, cords, toys, and small objects that could become trip or entanglement hazards.
  3. Verify stopping behavior. With the area empty, test the physical emergency stop and confirm that motion stops, other controls are overridden, and the restart procedure requires an intentional adult action.
  4. Disable autonomy initially. Turn off scheduled tasks, remote commands, and routines that could start while a child is nearby. Use the slowest approved movement settings for evaluation.
  5. Explain boundaries to the child. Make “do not touch the joints, stand behind it, block its sensors, or approach during a stop” concrete rules. Young children may still forget them, so explanations never replace supervision.

During interaction

  • Keep the child in the robot’s intended interaction position, away from feet, elbows, hands, and rear movement.
  • Never allow face-to-face contact at arm’s length if the robot can lunge, gesture, or rotate unexpectedly.
  • End the session immediately for a collision, stumble, sensor warning, overheating, abnormal sound, or unexplained movement.
  • After any incident, isolate the robot and follow the manufacturer’s inspection instructions before running it again.

Can a humanoid robot hurt a dog or cat?

Yes. A pet can be struck, trapped, stepped on, or frightened into running into furniture or outdoors. Animals also react differently from people: an unfamiliar gaze, voice, motor noise, or gesture may trigger barking, scratching, biting, chasing, or escape behavior. ISO 13482’s inclusion of domestic animals as safety-related objects is a reminder that pet risk is part of the safety problem, not an optional accessory concern.

A gradual introduction plan

  1. Start powered down. Let the animal investigate the stationary robot while it is unplugged or otherwise unable to move. Keep food, water bowls, bedding, toys, leashes, and litter areas outside the robot’s path.
  2. Use distance and a barrier. On a later session, operate the robot in a separate area while the pet remains behind a gate or in another room. Watch for staring, crouching, tail position, barking, hissing, hiding, or attempts to flee.
  3. Increase exposure slowly. Only reduce distance after several calm sessions. Keep an adult at the emergency stop and maintain a clear retreat route for the animal.
  4. Stop at fear or pursuit. Do not let the robot chase, corner, block, or repeatedly approach a pet. End the session if the animal shows fear, aggressive behavior, or escape attempts.

Never assume that a robot’s object-recognition system will identify a sleeping cat, a small dog under furniture, or a leash caught around a leg. Keep animals separated during autonomous routines unless the manufacturer documents a specific, tested animal-safety mode.

Emergency stops and automatic stopping

OSHA guidance, although written for industrial machinery rather than consumer humanoids, provides a useful control principle: emergency stops should be readily accessible, override other controls, and be supported by automatic stopping when speed is abnormal or travel exceeds the operating envelope. For a household robot, confirm where the physical stop is located, whether it works when the network is down, and what happens to the limbs and balance system after activation.

Questions to ask the manufacturer

  • Is there a physical, clearly marked emergency-stop control on the robot or its dedicated controller?
  • Does pressing it override voice commands, apps, scheduled routines, and remote operators?
  • Does the robot automatically stop after abnormal speed, lost localization, excessive tilt, failed sensors, or movement outside its mapped area?
  • Does it remain stopped until an adult deliberately resets it, or can it resume automatically?
  • Are brakes, joints, or limbs left in a safe position after a stop, and can an adult move the robot without creating another hazard?

If the answers are unavailable or limited to a software pause button, treat that as a significant gap. Keep children and pets away until the stop behavior is demonstrated in an empty room.

Privacy and relationship risks in child-facing use

Mechanical safety is only part of household risk. Cameras, microphones, cloud services, account profiles, and conversational systems can collect information about children, visitors, routines, and the home. The UK Government Office for Science’s assessment of humanoid robots identifies privacy challenges and uncertainty about public acceptance. Its summary states: “Safety and standards are key to ensuring that the use of humanoid robots does not cause harm to humans in public and private settings.”

Reduce data exposure

  • Disable microphones, cameras, and cloud sharing when they are not required for the task.
  • Use a unique account password, two-factor authentication where available, current firmware, and separate child profiles with the minimum permissions needed.
  • Review recording indicators, retention periods, deletion controls, third-party integrations, and whether clips are used to improve a service.
  • Tell children when the robot can hear or see them. Do not place a recording robot in bedrooms, bathrooms, or other private areas.
  • Revoke remote access for former household members, installers, and test accounts.

Attachment and authority

IEEE P7027, an active project on ethical and relational considerations in human–robot interaction, identifies “over-attachment, emotional dependency, and parasocial (one-sided) bonding” as risks in domestic and child-facing contexts. It also discusses role ambiguity, behavioral influence, social displacement, and anthropomorphism. A child may treat a persuasive machine as a friend, confidant, teacher, or authority figure even when it is wrong or malfunctioning.

Set a clear role: the robot may assist with a defined activity, but it is not a caregiver, disciplinarian, therapist, or substitute for a parent. Do not allow it to threaten consequences, give medical instructions without adult review, or become the only source of comfort or companionship.

What standards actually tell you

ISO 13482:2014 remains the principal published personal-care-robot safety reference, but it is being revised. ISO/FDIS 13482, edition 2, is in the approval phase and is intended to replace the 2014 edition. A draft or forthcoming edition is not evidence that a particular consumer robot has been certified against it.

IEEE P7027 is an active standards project focused on trust and relational safety in domestic, family, educational, and child-facing human–robot interaction. China’s plan 20261653-T-604, covering personal and household humanoid services, was shown in the retrieved record as soliciting comments. These developments indicate that dedicated household humanoid requirements are still evolving.

IEC 62849:2025 is a performance-evaluation document. It explicitly says it is not a safety or performance-requirements standard. A robot that performs well in an IEC 62849 evaluation therefore does not automatically have safety certification.

How to compare two humanoid robots

Use the same questions for every model; marketing labels such as “safe,” “family-friendly,” or “human-aware” are not comparable specifications.

Comparison axis Evidence to request Why it matters
Contact detection and force limiting Contact sensors, force and speed limits, protective response, finger and joint protection Reduces collision, crushing, and pinch risk
Balance and fall behavior Instability detection, fall envelope, protective-stop position, restart conditions Limits harm when the robot stumbles or is pushed
Emergency stop Physical control, accessibility, override behavior, manual reset Lets an adult stop motion immediately
Operating envelope Speed, reach, payload, floor limits, mapped boundaries, abnormal-motion detection Defines where and how the machine may move
Child and pet controls Supervision mode, reduced-speed mode, barriers, animal-detection limits Shows whether household unpredictability was considered
Data controls Camera and microphone switches, cloud settings, retention, deletion, account permissions Protects household and child privacy
Safety evidence Applicable service-robot testing, hazard analysis, incident reporting, and certification scope Separates documented safety work from performance claims

When to stop using the robot

Power it down or activate the emergency stop after any collision, fall, sensor error, overheating, abnormal noise, damaged cover, exposed wiring, or unexplained movement. Keep children and pets away while you contact the manufacturer or follow its inspection procedure. Do not bypass interlocks, tape over sensors, modify force limits, or continue testing to “see if it happens again.” A previously harmless event can become dangerous after a software update, mechanical wear, or a changed room layout.

A practical household decision rule

Allow proximity only when all of these conditions are true: the robot’s operating limits are documented; its emergency stop is physical, accessible, and tested; automatic stopping handles abnormal motion; the active area is clear and bounded; cameras, microphones, and cloud features are controlled; and an adult can intervene immediately. If any condition is unknown, keep children and pets separated and treat the robot as an unattended industrial machine until the gap is resolved.
